You should be careful with telling people on social media about your travel plans. To avoid burglary in your own home while you're away
@plug1461

klaus jespersen a lot of insurance companies void your claim if you have told social media your going away and your house will be empty. Your so right never tell the world your going away

Still not sure if i lost it or got stolen but i had 50 euros go missing from me in the madrid airport. Also backpack travel tip! if you have a backpack that only has a zipper closure i use a safety pin to put through the whole on the metal handle of the zipper and then through the fabric on the backpack. that way if someone was standing behind you trying to unzip your backpack, the safety pin would stop them. Therefore giving you more time to catch them in the act!

Before I traveled to Europe for the first time I was told to be aware of scammers and that people in Paris like to do a ring trick. This is when the person drops a ring in front of you and pretends that they found this ring and will ask if it’s yours then they will try to give it to you and ask for a reward. Well on my last day in Paris that happened to me but there was a woman in front of me and it happened so fast that you don’t think that you are being scammed but once I realized what was going on I quickly walked away. I also experienced someone grabbing my arm and trying to put a bracelet on me to make me pay for it. Be aware of your surroundings and it’s okay to be stern and hold your ground with people who are trying to take advantage of you.

Karah Wilson OMG same thing happened to me. Only it was an old man , it happened in front of the Louvre Museum. My dad gave him 5 euros to stop bugging is because he was afraid we were being distracted , the man cursed and told my dad he was cheap . I still have the ring, it was an unexpected souvenir.

When I was in Berlin at a church camp a stranger approached me and my friends, the stranger asked us to sign a protestation paper (thing). We were instinctively suspicious about the situation but we thought ah it’s for a good cause and it’s just our first names. To sign that was a HUGE mistake, from nowhere a group of people surrounded us and started to ask for donations. We thought it was a demonstration against discrimination but they wanted money. We started to panic, and luckily one of my friends just burped really really loud so that other tourists/people turned around, and in that moment I just grabbed her and the others and ran as fast as we could away from the crowd and in to a tourist information place. Even if we might have overreacted we later saw signs that warned the public for similar situations. I hope this comment is useful to someone. Stay safe ✌️ (Sorry for my bad english)

I would add to have easy access to addresses or numbers that will allow you to cancel your CC if they get stolen. Happened in Paris and I was able to use the CC app to cancel them and had replacements in two days. AND be careful but don't let fear keep you from exploring! - Henry

Two things - Wouldn't locking your bag point out that their is valuable things inside? Someone close to me told me once not to lock my bag due to that reason. I am a safety nerd and locked my bags anyways just in case. I have found that dressing like a local is difficult especially when going to many different regions. How'd you suggest being neutral? I lost my phone on my recent travels because I let my guard down. I struggled for a day and a half. Getting to a new location and buying a new phone. Simple as setting the phone down and forgetting it. I learned the most through adversity. Don't be afraid of uncertainty. Embrace it! Great tips Nadine!

Jemike5 I checked websites for stores I knew were popular in the area before I went to Belgium, got some idea of what people wore, and checked people in the backgrounds of travel blogs. But in general (at least for what I saw in Belgium and France), they dress up a bit more than Americans on a weekend. Not as into boxy unisex t-shirts, shorts, sandals (even in summer) or wearing athletic shoes when not working out, from what I saw in a small town, not a beach. They kept it casual with jeans or skirts and cool sneakers, more tailored shirts in causal fabrics. Also a big tip-off that you’re an American tourist can be how loudly you speak (apparently we can sound harsh and grating) so it’s appreciated and draws less attention anytime you can be respectful of local customs. Basically read the room, see how others around you act and do the same, hope that helped!

Peru! I had both my credit and debit card info stolen, they made a new card and took money out of the ATM in both cases. The bank called me when I was in Chile, The ATMs there mostly seem to have a device that reads cards and I will definitely be more likely to bring a wad of cash to exchange money ANYwhere I go from now on.First my debit was disabled, then my credit, when I was trying to buy a plane ticket out of Chile to go home! Very very inconvenient and frustrating. Peru really left a bad taste in my mouth, unfortunately. Good video, Nadine!

I've fallen for scams in the US where I live where people tell sob stories of their incredible misfortune and need a certain amount to pay for a tow truck or tank of gas or whatever. Also in Morocco, assume any local that talks to you is trying to get money out of you. Offering to show you the way to a place and then asking for money afterwards is the most common one. For anywhere, if a person asks "is this your first time in (country/city)?" and then "do you speak any (local language)?" Very likely they want to take advantage of you.

Thanks for great tips! I haven’t been scammed myself but happened to my parent. It involves money. They entered a small boutique and wanted to pay for a shoe, gave them $50 dollar bill and was waiting for the change. They accused my parents of not paying which did they did. Really scary because they threaten to call the police so my parents left the shop and lost $50 right there.

The last time I went to Paris, I went to Sacre Coeur and there were groups of people almost blocking the paths up to it, so you had to go between them - you could see it was a scam - and they tried to put a bracelet on my wrist and would then ask for money for it. It was horrible and I didn't spend long there because I felt so on edge.

When I was in Thailand we took the night train from Bangkok to the coast so we could transfer on a boat to Koh Phangan. An Aussie guy got on the train with his older father. I spoke to them a little and they came for dentist work but also a nice holiday. They were going out to the islands too, cant remember but think they were off the Koh Samui. Then once we were a few stops in someone else got on who had tickets for their seats. Turns out their tickets were fakes which they bought from someone at the station who they thought was reputable. The poor guys had to get off the train in the middle of the night and in a town where hardly anyone spoke english :( I always wonder what ended up happening. Im sure they would have just jumped on the next train and bought a ticket or something.

The only "scam" I have had an issue with is a pick pocket in Rome. However I caught her hand in my front pocket as she was pulling my money out. Hint: Be aware of anyone that touches you for no good reason. In this case she had a sign that she touched my chest area to blind me from what she was doing. Interesting to look someone in the face when they get caught.

Here's a tip for walking around with open pockets (basketball shorts etc) Even just any clothing. While walking when you are swaying your arms, every sway forward and backward make sure your thumbs brush up against your pockets to make sure your things are still there. Does that make sense? If not ask me any questions by replying below. It gets easier with time and you don't think about it. This is how I always walk no matter where I am. I've caught someone red handed and gotten them arrested this way in my hometown (Stockton, CA. Shitty place lol. Guard is always up) It's something most criminals/pit pocketers don't look for and an extremely easy way to check your pockets consistently instead of walking around with your hands in your pockets. That's just awkward. Hope this tip helps! Fanny packs are the shit too. A small one to tuck under your shirt is the best.
