Your shots are nice but I think they have little to do with reality. I don't know anyone who stands on a beautiful ship with a beautiful view on a beautiful day with a bright sun on a railing on the ship and plays.. :)(can you put the RG35xx that bright?..) But thanks for all the nice bags. Better one too many than too few..
"Do these guys think I'm really gonna just be out here in this beautiful weather but also on this cruise I paid for and be playing on a handheld I can barely see the gameplay on? Yeah, yeah they'll totally buy it cuz those mfers are way nerdier than me 😅" Russ probably
Is the rg35xx screen 4:3 or 3:2? Will GBA games have black borders by default? I'm interesed in SBC handhelds even though I have the Deck due to the more portable form factor.
I go hiking and backpacking a lot where I stay out in the woods for multiple days with no power. I love having a small handheld with me while sitting around camp or in my tent at night. I bring a small charger I use while hiking to keep the handheld topped off. These things are great to get my nerd fix in while getting outdoors.
I bought a power bank that includes a fold out solar sheet with four panels precisely for such a use case. If I need a lot of power, I also have a much larger fold out solar sheet that simply has two USB outs for charging.
Oh same. Always gotta make sure my devices work offline too. I had a miserable experience one time trying to use a music app on my phone that couldn't launch without internet even tho I had music downloaded. Almost ruined my camping trip
For me, Steam Deck for daily driver when I have easy access to an outlet for sure. Too great for modern games and perfect for emulating the stronger games like ps2 and up. My pocket retro is the RG353P I recently got. It's perfect for my ps1 and down itch and great for lines and waiting rooms. Got tired of emulators on my phone cause I prefer buttons over touchscreen.
I’m traveling now and I’ve brought my Switch, Steam Deck, and Retroid Pocket 3+. When I’m actually in airports, the Retroid Pocket 3+ is great! I can stick it in my purse, the battery lasts for quite a while before I need to charge it, and at SFO I was actually streaming games! I bought a super low profile plug with a usb C outlet and I can pretty much pack my bigger handhelds until I actually get on the plane. We actually had a situation where we had to get on a later flight due to an injury (long story, injured party is totally fine and was cleared to fly) and that RP3+ pretty much made 6-7 hours fly by.
The deck is all in one, that's what's great about it, all you need on a trip is a deck. But, having a smaller system for retro stuff would be good as well to save battery, or play while charging deck.
Thank you for such great perspective. Outside of your unique artistic and communicative flairs (which are always a huge part of the joy in your channel), THIS is the kind of perspective that really sets you apart from others in this space. From counting on the kid factor to those pesky in-laws letting their phones go dead every time to a reminder of just how much down time inevitably exists on every trip, Retro Game Corps really shines best in this sort of fireside chat type of content. Your more pragmatic exploration of real-world applications is refreshing and directly relatable, and in my earlier comment about benchmarking this is the kind of feel I think you can bring to that space as well. I don’t know how-I’m not the smartest guy in the room-but you continue to produce great content as you continue to evolve. Thanks for bringing us along, keep up the great work! And I’m a two device guy, for sure-Steam Deck and hacked PS Vita.
@@spritsfal5088 hahaha-I have a Vita for the same reason Russ had a smaller handheld. The Vita is super small, super portable, powerful enough to run a large library of systems, and the battery life all these years later is still spectacular. Haven’t tried emulating Vita yet, only a handful of Vita-specific titles I really enjoy these days.
@@spritsfal5088 I don't think PS Vita emulation is that great on either x86 or ARM. So it's a legitimate reason to still stick to the original hardware, for native support of systems PSVita, PSP, and PS1. When hacked it can comfortably play all the systems from Atari 1D to 2D GBA. It's decent with the likes of 32X, Saturn, N64, NDS. But it can't really do Dreamcast, PS2, 3DS, GameCube, Wii. Those can be done on something more powerful like the RP3+ or faster. But if he has a Valve SteamDeck, that can handle those systems that a hacked PS Vita cannot. Btw, I prefer the PS Vita Slim, it's more pocket friendly, and the screen doesn't burn-in. But hopefully next year, with the new Vita3k emulator and RP5 device, we can replace the hacked PS Vita Slim from our arsenal. Or it could come in the form of a GPD Win-2 (pocketable x86) successor.
Russ, itmay be the uncoolest thing ever, but a Fanny pack is a dads best friend when traveling. I wear it like a sling most times, but it’s nice to be able to wear it on your waist when you want to give your shoulder a break. Mine is large enough that I can fit a battery pack, cables, a small retro handheld and even a small water bottle. Give it a go for your next vacation or just when you’re on the town with family.
For octopath 2, you go through every storyline in one playthrough. As you travel to each town, the game asks if you want to see the characters backstory and you play through their first chapters as though you started the game with them. You do not need to do multiple playthroughs to see everything. The only thing is the first person you chose will be permanently attached to the active party but you will eventually add all the other characters to your team. And yeah the game is sort of structured like an open world game where you can tackle chapters in any order you want. But the game also tells you what level you should be in for each chapter so it kinda points you in a linear fashion to what you should tackle next.
this. it was the same with Octopath Traveler 1 as well. And once you completed your "main character's" story arc, they can be removed from the party. That aside, it's still 100hrs of play time, which is difficult for a family man like Russ.
I was just in Hawaii back in Sept last year and spend 5 days in Oahu and 5 in Maui. I only have an RG351M for travel, no steam deck or anything else but it was great. It was super simple to just pull up Metroid or Dragon's Lair, play for 10 or 15 min and put it away. I think anymore, unless there are specific higher end games a user wants emulated (like on the PS2), just about any device will do.
Hey Russ, thanks for the amazing videos! I am very similar to you in that i recently traveled with a steam deck and my smaller RG350. I found I used the 350 more due to its smaller size and convenience, however the small screen is a pain, also the fact the dead is low on my unit isn't too great in the hand. Im considering upgrading the RG350 to the RG35XX or the Milo mini plus. Have to say I prefer the mini plus's screen looking full width, and the purple colour is really nice, but I just updated the OS to the Adam image on the RG350, and love the way it looks. Is it possible to use the box art I scrapped in my current ROM folders with Garlic OS? Thanks for taking the time to read my comment man!!
I already think it’s a hassle to take out my OLED switch on the go, how much more for the chunkier and heavier Steam Deck? It stays at home. I’d rather bring a smaller retro handheld that doesn’t take too much space in my luggage. When you go travelling, every gram and every milimeter counts. I’ve been travelling a lot so I already know more of this stuff
How timely. I’m going on my first Royal Caribbean in two weeks. Naturally, priority went to which device im taking along. I decided on the Steam Deck, Switch OLED and Miyoo Mini (OG baby). I also taking my Nreal Air sunglasses for the Steam Deck. Can’t wait to be called a 40 something manchild by everyone playing solitaire on their phones.
"The Steam deck is not ideal for playing in direct sunlight" - this is actually one of the two most important things that turns a handheld game console into a proper portable
Did you think about bring the Steam Deck dock to plug into the TV in the cabin room? I am going on a cruise this December in the Caribbean and I have an ayaneo Geek and Miyoo Mini, so this video is right up my alley. I think im going to bring the dock though to plug into the tv in the cabin
The TV in our cabin was very small, maybe 18" altogether, so not something I would want to dock. I had the hookups with me if I had wanted to plug it in, but I found it was much more comfortable to play it in handheld mode.
I've done the same cruise Russ! I was stationed on Oahu from 2015-2018. My favorite Island to visit was Kauai. I wish the steam deck would have existed back then!
I do a lot of car traveling, and for some reason the steam deck, and switch just felt to much of a chore to play, what I’ve been using is the psp” my issue with that was I needed extra batteries or a way to plug it in constantly. What has replaced my psp for me completely is the retroid pocket 3+.
I don't travel enough but if I go anywhere I like having an all in one device one I can modern game on or retro so I just always want my steam deck with me I love the steam deck so much
Yea. The Deck is the one. I have sssooooo many of the other Amberic, Shmabernic devices and I like em but the Deck..? The roms are actually playable on there, PLUS PC games. Its HUGE etc but If Im on holiday..Im gonna use it inn the eve, not whilst Im out with my family! DECK FOREVER (just make a smaller version Gabe!)
I was a member of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club from 1979 to 1985 and know that a 7 day cruise would be a sea sick extravaganza. I would usually take 3 weeks to get my sea-legs. I had a similar size hand bag for my Olympus ON2 camera and zoom lens and other necessitates when doing my Med/IO tours and can say it is just the right size to carry along on the tour bus. It looks my robust than mine which broke in about a year. The only computer game that I remember playing was on a shipmates Timex -1000 which was a basic typed in game from a magazine. I wish that could remember what it was called. Village raider something? I glad you enjoyed your cruise , have a nice week.
For the longest time I lugged my 3DSXL with me on many of my travels. Especially because of the form factor and the clamshell configuration being quite sturdy. With my Vita, Switch or SteamDeck I seem to be more fussy about being careful with the devices.
Just saying, love the content as a new subscriber. YES, be a local hero and show figuring out the savestate transfers. YES, love the honest reality relating to a real vacation with/visiting fam/friends and downtime. And yes, I agree now with myself much more, and you, independent systems for different situations is a worthwhile consideration, as I adore the Deck as the all-in-one but it is by no means "pocketable". And honestly maybe not the best choice for just a few quick minutes gaming. Thank you for sharing how you share your time with gaming and family. Your example is a very positive one in the gaming community as a whole friend.
Retro handhelds are cool and all, but can you start a travel channel? I want to see a vlog where the tour guide asks you "Do you want to see the volcano Kilauea up close?" and you're like "Yeah man, I wanna do it."
I prefer takin only one device with me with a very limited set of sytems and roms. This way I can only focus on a few games without getting lost. It reminds me of childhood trip where I would have a Game Boy and a handful of cartridges.
Golden Sun? Good choice!!! Waaaayy more fun than FF on a handheld. It's my favorite RPG of that era. PS. You look pretty young for having completed almost 23 years in the NAVY, but maybe you got lucky with your commands and had little stress to worry about iuno....
Octopath and Bravely Default kind of... suck. I'd compare it to Breath of Fire, Seventh Seal, Lufia, from the 90's. Like the B-series from the 90's that aren't classics because they're fairly flawed and fairly grind-heavy. I even like the battle system in Octopath/Bravely Default, it's a great idea, but they kind of forced the Brave/4 times move on you. It's almost not optional with the way damage and elemental weaknesses scale. I would suggest the modern version of Trials of Mana. It's not grind heavy, the modern remake made combat a little more robust, and only real downside is Charolette's voice in the remake. Aria of Sorrow is another really lean and mean Metroidvania. You never get lost and progression feels linear.
*Retro* game corps; have not beaten the most classic platforms, and some of the golden standard of RPG on the retro library. EFFING LOVE IT. It's me. I am him. I love my retro games. Have not completed one since I actually had a SNES or GBC when I was a literal child.
Even though we have quite a few handhelds, we never play while traveling, except for in the hotel room. Concentrating on playing while riding busses or cars actually gives me motion sickness and it still hard to concentrate on gaming in a train with lots of people chatting away. A smaller handheld is more likely to be taken along because it doesn't feel like a waste of space even if it doesn't see much or any action. But I wonder if the GPD Win 4 will actually be taken along, while my SD doesn't really leave the house. Btw, constantly jumping games is bad for actually finishing RPGs. Have countless ones that I started multiple times and never finished, some of them I've been wanting to finish for 30+ years... Planescape Torment took me two or three tries, starting from the beginning each time, to actually finish and I was proud of myself once I did. xD
I travel 15 days out of the month. Different hotel room every night. For gaming, I have my steam deck and my 3DS. The 3DS is great, cuz it'll fit in my pocket and I can pull it out for 10-15 minutes at a time. The steam deck comes out if I've got a long layover in an airport, or I'm sitting in the back of an airplane, and absolutely when I get to the hotel.
I take my onexplayer mini, 20K mah 65w power bank , soundcore vr p10 2.4ghz earbuds, folding keyboard/mouse ,and 65w wall charger inside of slim hardshell sling bag to keep everything protected.
This was great video and very informative, especially for parents, when travelling. You review videos have given me a lot of Christmas ideas as well... Keep up the good work
In my opinion anything over $100 is not worth it for a retro handheld since most likely the quality wouldn’t be great coming from these companies, and you certainly won’t get great performance for demanding platform like the ps2 which can be emulated on pc flawlessly.
Holy heck you have children that age? Sheesh, you look too young for that. Edit: 23 years in the navy? What the actual heck, Benjamin Button. I literally thought you were like 24 years old.
Haha same with super Mario world! I don’t think I’ve ever beat the game but it’s always a SNES game I load and play. Finally put a bit of time into playing it and got to bowsers castle, and then stopped playing and got caught up with something else. Maybe it’ll get finished when I get the Flip in the mail.
You really need to setup some savegame synchronisation across your devices. I ended up spending some work getting into „syncthing“. It was well worth the time spent! Definitely more advanced stuff, though
i traveled on a 5 day cruise last year with my powkiddy v90 and my friends did not tell me to bring a bluetooth controller. One guy brought his macbook and we spent alot of down time playing gamecube mario golf on the dolphin emulator with his ps4 controller. another guy brought his 8bitdo controller. and macbook guy anticipated i would bring my switch to have bluetooth controllers. i have not seen them in some time so they dont know i was into these retro handhelds. the two device set up would have been nice back then but i chose the v90 so that i can pack light
Dear Russ, I know you didn't sign up for wanton objectification and harassment, but "nerd" or not, its good to see your face, great work on the videos, love to hear from you. Also, your hair looks good.
My dad refused to go on cruise ships for the longest time because of his service in the Navy. Turns out once we forced him on one, he loved it too haha
I don't have kids, so my vacation is usually doing a lot of stuff. I bring my trimui s. Bigger handhelds doesn't make sense, when I use it only for a few hours across whole vacation.
Maybe do like a book club but instead, choose a game and have your audience play too. At the end of a month do a review. I know you're not a game review channel but it could still be fun. Get some videos and shorten up that backlog.
Am I stupid or are those NOT retro handhelds. I was thinking like Gameboy, psp, game gear, things like that. All those can play retro games but they aren't retro.
Honestly think the steam deck is just too big to carry around. Still think ARM is the way forward for emulation handhelds even if they are not quite there yet,
I've got a two week trip in Europe. Lots of travel during the day. I don't think I'll be able to take the deck or switch so I'm thinking retroid pocket 3+
bro i love your sleeve tattoo, i have the same lenth one, just above the watch area, japaneese style too. any plans on getting more? you have great taste in tattoos. ps can my god damn Aya neo 2 hurry up and be shipped? its been 3 months lol cant wait to play Diablo 4 hand held lol
Steam deck is the companion to a Gaming PC, and neo mini is the companion to the steam deck. Might I suggest a digimon pocket for a companion to the neo mini, and a crossword book as a companion to the digimon pocket
