I like videos like this that talk about real world use cases for these devices. Getting into specs and build quality and technical details is fine, there is a place for that of course, but what I like about your channel is that you always keep the final user experience in mind, it never feels like you are just doing white room theorizing.
I got a v1 and v2 miyoo and I had the same v1 issues as you with buttons that would occasionally get stuck. I had some success with lightly sanding the buttons sides and holes a bit, but luckily the v2 didn't have that issue. I still think the button membranes are a bit firm and still don't feel as good as 280v buttons, but it's an improvement. And I'm kinda wondering if you TRULY like the Vita or just like the idea of it, lol. It was honestly more of an emulation machine for me since the Vita exclusive library never hooked me, and the Chinese handhelds have replaced it for my emulation. When I travel with it, I'm also in the same boat as you in picking it up but not actually starting a game. Also, glad to hear how much you like the steam deck. I just got mine a week ago and it surprised me in how much I enjoy holding it and the controls. They really did a great job with the design.
I'm sure it is for the first day or so, assuming symptoms aren't hitting you too hard. After that I would get bored no matter how many handhelds I brought with me. :-)
@@modestyblaise4167 whoa whoa whoaa!! I'm only agreeing with the being stuck in a hotel room, just to clarify my responce... Because it happened to me and I'm glad I had my devices for my 14 days stuck in a single room, (My partner caught covid, I somehow dodged it), she's glad she had her switch and kindle for sure.
I left mine for like 4 years in my closet and with a little unplug plug back in the battery maneuver I was able to charge it at all! Fully functional battery still despite not charging in all 4 years or longer.
The vita has the best standby of any electronic ive ever used. My mim took my brothers vita away for 2 weeks (he didn't turn it off) and the battery only went down around 20% and that's with the wifi on and receiving notifications and everything. My phone lasts maybe a day with no use. I would imagine the vita could hold out for a solid month and a half, maybe 2 months. The battery life during usage isn't thay great though. The DS lite probably has the best performance there
I thought you might have taken a 3DS for all the Nintendo games you like to play. They’re great for retro emulation as well but I understand why you don’t talk about that in your channel. Nintendo is always watching! Great video as usual!!
Hey, russ: in the first section where you're discussing the steam deck's inability to charge in its case, you may want to try a right-angle, low-profile USB-C cable. Granted it might not be much less of an expense than a new steam deck case, but may be worth it, esp with the versatility of usb-C. Love ur videos, man.
I've just bought a tiny 90 degree thing with power delivery and a headphone jack for £3 - hopefully it will solve that problem, and also give a way to use wired headphones in Windows!
I can imagine your going to be missed when you leave the Navy Russ. Some newbie joins has a problem with his Anbernic device, someone says if only you were here six months earlier, Russ could have sorted that for you.
Bro Ik that exact feeling with the Vita. But for me it's like certain games. I rather spend some good quality time sitting down and playing some great relic game instead of whipping out my handheld and trying to pass the time. I just value some games more like rpg games where I can dive into the story and not waste it by trying to fill in the time while waiting or traveling.
When on a plane, or travel in general, I can’t play games full stop. I’ve had the top noise-cancelling ‘phones from Sony, a snappy and always ready vita. Nothing. It’s like peeing when someone else is nearby and your brain is aware of it. Music and podcasts are the only things I can use on the go. I think my stressed mindset explains both. :( The XM4’s are a dream to use on the plane though. The stories online are not exaggerated. It’s like entering a quiet room.
I feel you a bit on the Vita I'm finding my self feeling the same way about it now that I have my Deck, but part of it is in my case I know I'm towards the end of what I can personally get out of the Vita's native library just from the fact I've had mine for like 3 years now. But having the Deck around which so far I've found still small enough to carry with me regularly so far it's not that big of a concern to me, I was planning on letting my Vita breath a bit a easier any ways as now it's not having to double as my emulation handheld.
Since I DON'T (or can't) have a steam deck, I have three main handhelds. First is my Vita, where I mostly play Vita and some PSP games, my RG351P for my PS1 and Gameboy games, and my 3DS for my 3DS and DS games. The Vita can play PS1 games but I don't use the SD2Vita with it since I still want to have the ability to play game carts. Some PSP games work well with the RG, and some don't so I put those in the Vita, and play others in the RG. Of course, the 3DS is on a different level since none of the other two handhelds can play DS or 3DS games. I have one bag that fits them all, including a case for the game carts, as well as charging cables, which all fit in my messenger bag. Just my 2 cents.
Great video. I love retro handhelds. I personally would’ve taken a modded new 3DS XL with an R4 Cart. and the Steam deck. I would’ve left the Vita at home. I believe that the Vita should be used for special occasions, as far as the Miyoo Mini, the Steamdeck can emulate everything that can be played on the Miyoo Mini so it’s a bit redundant to bring the Mini along. I know that the people rave over the Miyoo Mini but I just can’t comfortably play with it for no more than 15-20 without feeling discomfort. I know that the steam deck can play DS games but for me personally there is just something really charming about the dual screen display and the stylus, even the 3D capability is much more refined with new New 3DSXL. It also has a great catalog.
woah, so the Deck has bluetooth? Can someone confirm if Steam OS currently has LDAC or AptX Low Latency codec support? I use LDAC on my Ubuntu laptop with my Sony 1000XM3 headphones, they added tons of new codecs on Ubuntu 22.04, so I guess probably Steam OS has it too, as it's based on Arch.
Hi. Recently traveled with a Switch OLED, it was ok, but next time I will travel with PS Vita, again. It is just the right size, it plays its own modern enough games, it plays retro games, it plays PSP games, it plays basically everything you need while on vacation. And vita is modern enough to use bluetooth headphones. I also don't use cases and vita fits perfectly into sunglasses pocket on the most of my backpacks and weighs nothing. Switch OLED, on the other hand, is perfect, when you need to spend a lot of time in the road, at the airports, trains, etc.
Based on your PS Vita section I’m guessing that you’re the type who saves all your items for the last boss but then still doesn’t use them cause you want to save them for after
Does Steam support achievements while offline? that's one of the main reasons I wanted a Steam handheld. It was kind of frustrating for me to not be able to get achievements on my Anbernic devices during a flight, that was also when I started considering to get a Vita for the same reason, haha
Yeah, the steam deck is a bit large to travel with for me. Too many raised eyebrows and conversation starters for an anti social person like me. I usually pack the RP2+ and the Odin (PowKiddy X18S prior to getting the Odin) for airplane trips. Thanks for sharing your experience, Russ.
I recently had to do some travelling and found myself with only an Odin Pro for a week. Absolutely wonderful experience, and it's become my favourite overall handheld for weight and size and pure ease of use and performance. AYN seems to have caught lightning in a bottle with this one.
Fascinating video Russ, glad to see you’re all recovered now! My personal choices for travelling would be the Powkiddy X18s (not great build quality but I love a clamshell handheld and the performance for pretty much everything is terrific), my PS Vita, my DSi XL and my 3DS XL, those would make any journey positively fly by! Looking forward to the Miyoo Mini V2 / MiniUI video! Warmest greetings from the UK!
Exactly. Clamshell design is an important factor to consider when traveling. It’s why the GameBoy Advance SP went everywhere with me (and got it’s fair amount of superficial scratches on the outside of the case).
I love your steam deck videos and your emu deck video earned you a sub. The other handhelds are awesome too. I’d love to see a video on your favorite titles to play on the deck or other consoles, retro or not.
PSVita and Steam Deck seems like the best combo for gaming on the go. PSVita for casual emulation and access to PS1, PSP, and PSVita games natively in a small package. Suddenly want to replay the whole Parasite Eve trilogy or every Final Fantasy game from I to X-2 including Dissidia? Have at it. And the Steam Deck for more hardcore emulation like the Nintendo Switch while having access to a huge steam library of AAA games.
Lot of great insight for me as I am travelling tomorrow. Luckily I easy choice to choose from as I have only two (PSP & PS VITA) and winner is PS VITA. (My Steam Deck is on preorder). I guess 90 degree USB C cable would fix the charging thing in Deck but yea I agree, I too charge my Vita inside the case. It's very safe that way.
To me, the Steamdeck is what you bring to play IN the hotel room. The Miyoo Mini (or an Anbernic device) is what I'd have in my pocket while I'm out and about.
That's exactly what I figured before starting, that I would use the Vita for on the plane, the Mini when I had a spare moment (while waiting to board, for example), and the SD in the hotel room. But in every scenario I found that I would rather pull out the SD than the others.
I work offshore on an oil vessel. The devices I use are: -Asus G14 gaming Laptop. -Nintendo Switch -Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra for emulation -A Miyoo Mini / GKD Mini or RP2. Currently I brought my GKD Mini. Out of all of them, the only one I really use while traveling on planes is the GKD Mini / Miyoo / RP2. The RP2 is specially great for this because of its battery. I might replace it once the Odin arrives.
The first time I traveled with a handheld, it was just post 9/11. The rules weren't quite worked out yet, in Australia, so I could still take cans of coke in my bag on the plane. Not thinking, I just shoved my gameboy and DC power supply in the front pouch, with a couple of cans neatly wrapped behind it. I saw on the bag scanner it looked like what it was: a circuit board, two opaque cylinders, and a jumble of wires. The security guys checking the scans saw it, one said "woah wait a minute", changed something on their machine (maybe scanned at a different frequency? I dunno), the cans suddenly looked clear on the scanner, and they breathed a sigh of relief and waved it through. Since then, I've been much more considerate in my bag packing, with clearly identifiable discrete items.
I'd suggest next time you leave behind the steamdeck and take a bloody gas mask instead, maybe then you won't catch COVID. Glad you are ok though, my wife has an autoimmune condition and so we have been shielding at home since COVID began. We can't go anywhere safely because if she gets it, she will be seriously ill or worse. Anyway looking forward to your version 2 video. Stay well and safe Russ
Yeah I thought I was the only weirdo, ive been putting off games ive not played for years because I dont want to beat them as it will be over 😂 super weird.
"as popular as this thing actually is"... It's not! At all! We know about it because we are in the tech circle, but even the majority of PC gamers who are in the same circle have no clue this is even a thing. It's not mainstream, it's not even big, it's way less niche than competing devices, but it's still really obscure tech, and I'm not even getting into how unknown it is in countries where it doesn't even sell yet. The fact that it looks like a overboard doesn't help either. I love it though, but I'd feel the exact same way pulling this out of a bag in public. Awesome video, as always, love that you actually get into real use case scenarios for these devices.
Ha! I can't say how many times I wanted to get into a game but didn't feel like I had the right level of time and commitment to dedicate to something that I am expecting to be amazing. So instead of playing it I play something that I'm less excited about because I don't feel like I'm going to ruin the experience with that one. 🤷🏽♂️ guess I'm not the only one who struggles with this internally and then makes fun of himself for that struggle. Good problem to have I guess.
I have my Switch Lite,Vita and Retroid Pocket 2 that I carry in my backpack and I pack it Switch on bottom followed by my Vita then My Pocket 2. Works great that way.
steam deck is huge. hopefully they release a lite pocketable version. would also like to see Sony release a new handheld with the PSP go form factor. imagine a ps Vita go with dual analogs and touch sensors on the back for L2/R2
Hey may a suggest instead of traveling with a bunch of handhelds at once why don't you just do a a series where you take more trips and travel 🧳 with a different handheld each time and let us know your experience on each trip. Battery life . Was it hard to charge was the screen bad where you were playing cause of to much light did you get fatigue or bored but most importantly did you have FUN.
Can you please make a detailed guide on Steam Deck Dual Boot windows 11 / Steam OS using rEFInd I like your videos and no one has made a step by step worth following thanks.
It's going to take a while for the steam deck to hit mainstream attention. First of all PC gaming itself is not as popular as console gaming. There's a reason they consider themselves a master race and have a stuck-up attitude... It's because they're in the minority lol The main issue is cost. A serious gaming PC is still prohibitively expensive to the average consumer. And the pandemic and bit coin made it even worse.
I have the same feeling with the vita games. I also feel like I want to give the games the time they deserve and they aren't light enough. However, Salt and Sanctuary was a really great game to play on the vita, or using it to play hollow knight via my ps4. I am also playing FFVII on the vita via Adrenaline, but it's just a game I really want to enjoy.
Just to note, If you have a problem with squeaky buttons grab a tissue and put like a drop of 3 in 1 oil on it, and then just rub it around the area that the opposing plastic will touch, I done that with my Neo Geo CD, Prevents sticking and does not squeak anymore, effectively its just gonna have a thin coating that isnt going to be significant enough to attract dirt I have no idea if it harms it but its buttons, They can be replaced, Not had the chance to test this with other things on the market.
I know what you mean with the PS Vita. I bought a new one a few months ago and it's so pretty that I'm legit contemplating buying a beat up one off eBay to game on so I don't have to be so careful with it. I get what you were saying was a little different, I'm just saying I get it lol.
I want to love my Vita as you do but man my hands feel numb after 20 minutes or so, I find it terribly uncomfortable. Taking into account all the devices you own, I think I would choose the Odin in case to travel, due to not being too big or too small, the battery lasts an eternity afaik and I can play there nearly everything I would need to play.
Are there lots of people having problems with the miyoo’s buttons? I’ve never ran across issues with the buttons on mine even on the version 1. Not sure if I got lucky on my particular handhelds. It might be a rare issue.
I actually fix the button getting stuck on the Miyoo Mini V1, you just need to open the system up and file the rim of the buttons. But you gotta be careful opening it up though, the ribbon cable is extremely delicate and can easily rip leaving the screen useless.
You can actually flip the steam deck upside-down in the case and zip around the cable just fine. My gf did it the first day I got it as we charged it in a car for a 2 hour road trip right after I received the deck. No damage whatsoever in doing so.
About the charge port on the Steam deck. I suspect it's part of the design. Do not charge anything inside a case like that one. While charging doesn't generate that much heat, it does generate heat. Enough insulation from say... a case, the battery and/or the charging circuitry can get too warm.
Dude I have the exact same feeling about Vita content. I am in RetroArch 99.9% of the time when the Vita is on. I’ve started a few Vita titles but stop progressing in them.
brought switch, ps vita and 3ds on my last travel. i ended up playing 3ds all the time. the only downside is 3ds sleep mode sucks. vita is still the best in term of sleep mode, followed by switch.
World's going to be uninhabitable in many places in a few years and here we are watching a video about how to play video games whilst flying a jet to Hawaii.....
i absoultly understand the psvita part. half my steam library is this. i bought it, play it like 10mins and then thinking, i will play this another time and its never touched again
For me, it'd be the Switch OLED plus the RG351V. I wish the RG351V had larger A/B/X/Y buttons (basically the size of the DMG's A/B buttons), but they certainly work well as is, too.
I'll bring my vita with me to work to use on my lunch and people will be like why are you playing that not using a switch then I'll let em use it and they realize how comfortable it is so many people have never used one even once it's a shame honestly
hahahaah i waited the whole video and knew it I bet my friend he would of rather brough a ambernic but cause he left a pole and everyone hates ambernic i knew he couldnt take it but i own one and i knew he was gonna mention wanting to bring it Cool to see you still saying the truth and not paid off by rage and hate lol
Great video!! Travel gaming is my thing, and I'm happy our selections aren't so diffrent. I mostly use a Switch (until my steamdeck arrives), MIYOO mini and lastly my 2DSXL! I don't have space for my overear headphones, so I'm very envious of noise cancelling!! It's suprising how nice that can be. Glad you're well, and it was nice to see your insights.
Man i will not wonder that if there are a lot of handhelds in your toilet too.Wtf u need so much handhelds if i dont have one.Send me one of your handhelds and be good boy man,be good boy man!
The bluetooth aspect is one of the reason why i bought retroid, it is just very nice to have over ear headset and using them with the retroid while travelling
