Rousseau written in 1770, the story of his life.The house where he lived is located in Chambéry in Savoie and one can still explore today this place as it was in 1736.and see JJ's bedroom, garden, Madame de Warens 's bedroom and relive the pages of the book and his youth.

Lovely video, it's a beautiful place and beautiful scenery. Funnily enough I have heard of J.J. Rousseau and I'm reminded of a quote I once heard in an English comedy I used to watch in the 1990's called Birds of a Feather (about 2 sisters whose husbands both end up in jail). There's one episode where these sisters visit their husbands in jail and while they were waiting outside one of them does some graffiti and writes the quote "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains". I quickly googled this quote while watching your video to see if I was correct and found quite a few things relating to that quote, so I may end up looking at checking out his work. I think he would've been a very interesting person to know. I also think that quote is still relatable to today. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Katie for sharing your litte story, , it's cool that sometimes a film or tv series 'I didn't knw the one you are mentioning) can open the doorfor the spectators to philosophical deeper thoughts they wouldn't have expected , watching them. yes it' s a beautiful quote I would say 99,9% of his writings are still totally relevant today, more than ever, rather it is his writings, on politics, human beings, education of children, nature .... it still works today.

What a remarkable and beautiful video! Thank you so much for sharing with us this wonderful experience. I have not read The Confessions, but you have inspired me to do so now! I read The Reveries of the Solitary Walker in college, after a professor of mine recommended it (funnily enough, he disagreed deeply with Rousseau’s political philosophy but respected him because of the style of his writing and his attitudes towards nature and life). Unfortunately I do not read French but I was struck by how clear and simple and beautiful JJR’s prose style is, in English (and I’ve heard also in French)! I will read The Confessions and will make a point of visiting this beautiful area when I next visit France, hopefully sooner rather than later. I love how beautiful the house and gardens are, and especially how simple and unadorned the bedroom looks. It’s exactly the kind of place I can picture JJR walking around, thinking, and then spending hours writing his books and letters. Thank you for your inspiring video!

Thank you very much Mr Robert !very glad if this video has inspired you to maybe go back to Jean-Jacques, it's funny I think most people when they have read something from him, it's always les Rêveries, it's interesting ! Les confessions is a much more joyful reading, the 6 first books are all delightful, you will let me know what you think !Oh yes his prose is just always precise, elegant and straight to the point. So in this house he didn't write any of his books, it's mainly where he studied his ideas, and other's writings, and music composition , which was he big interest during these years. I will try later this year to visit another house near Paris where he actually wrote some of his texts. Yes the house is wonderful as it's not a museum, but a real old house with nothing fancy but its very easy as you said to imagine him after les Confesiosn evolving in these rooms and garden and lanes around the house. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your passion for Rousseau and his charming and very beautiful house! I am inspired to read his Confessions after this and use the lovely colours of the interior walls! What magnificent wall papers too, just so exquisite. This was a delightful feast and what a lovely place to have spent time in. I can see you just absorbing and imaging all the places he inhabited.

Thank you Amanda, yes the wallpapers are just little master pieces, they are very inspiring, glad if you see their beauty too. I'm lucky to have it very close, have been there many times, and plan to go back there during the summer season. Yes Jean-jacques' places have been an obsession of mine for a few decades now Ive pretty much been everywhere he lived in France, Italy and Switzerland, excepting his homes in England and the one in Torino. Happy if it inspired you to read his Confessions, hope you will enjoy it too :)

Wow, thank you. This was a feast for the eyes and ears, and balsam for the soul.I hope I can find a beautiful old book translated into English. Thank you Sabine !oh yes Jean-Jacques Rousseau has been entirely translated in english and many other languages at the same time he was published in France in the 18th century , so you can easily find nice old copies translated too.Oh this book you read is of the same period than most of his writings. Love the title.So it explains your interest for France, Happy Easter to you too!!

I stumbled upon your fascinating video by accident and loved it. I’m slightly obsessed by 18th Century France but have always avoided Rousseau because I’m a devout & very positive Catholic who loves the Church and he is, shall we say, no friend of the Church of Rome. However, you have inspired me so much that I’ve ordered Rousseau’s Confession and am looking forward to reading it soon. Thank you for inspiring me.
@Merveillesenpapier

Glad my little video inspired you to order it, I don't think you will be disappointed ! No it's true he had a catholic phase in his youth but came back to protestantism being born in Switzerland he was raised as a protestant after all and then he developped his own version, but he was never an atheist. Thank you for stopping by !
@albertsmyth9616

@@Merveillesenpapier that’s very interesting, because I was told he was an atheist which was obviously not true so thank you very much for correcting that misconception, I appreciate it!
@Merveillesenpapier
@Merveillesenpapier Год назад
It's the contrary he always struggled with his fellow friends and philosophs atheists like Diderot for example who wanted to "convert" him.You will understand more of his vision when you read les confessions, he talks a lot about that how it helped him at so many tough and challenging times of his life.

Thank you very much again for this discovery. I;ve never been to JJ Rousseau house, but it looks lovely and inspiring. Just like you I like to discover the house of artists, and writers I like. When I visit one, I feel the presence , the spirit of the persons who have lived in between the walls. I have read "les rêveries du promeneur solitaire" but not the confessions... I am going to!... Oh! and I love the version you have, with the beautiful illustrations. Thank you for your inspiring videos, once again...
@Merveillesenpapier

Oh yes it is , you are absolutly right , we can totally feel their presence sometimes it's very moving...Les confessions is much better than les rêveries which is already a beautiful book.Happy if you are tempted to read it . you can find copies with these illustrations on Ebay , mine is not illustrated but I found those online, but will probbaly hunt for a copy with those, they are too beautiful and I love this illustrator.
