This video clip documents a few select parts from my previous progressive / metal outfit Periphery.
The first two examples are from the tune "Insomnia" (the intro and 1:05-1:21, respectively). The third and fourth examples are from "Juggernaut: Icarus Lives!" (the first chorus and the big 32nd note triplet lick into the outro, respectively). Finally, the fifth and sixth examples are from "The Walk" (2:45-3:39). I would have played that particular section all of the way through but the memory card on my camera isn't very large, heh. T-shirt provided by my friends in The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, check 'em out!
Thanks, everyone!

Nice! Sounds great, huge fan of the band. Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration... and tony danza tapdance extravaganzas da sheet!!

Actually, I can burst four strokes up to 400BPM clean, with power... hehe. Repetition goes a long way! The 'joke tunes' are just Misha and Alex passing time and retaining some form of interest in the band. We still have a very friendly rapport with Casey and he is helping us find/pick out our new vocalist. Thanks for your interest and your kind words, brotha!

Man, this was totally fresh and awesome. Amazing stuff. I can certainly see why "Mangini" was one of the tags. :-) But it's still your own stuff, and it's killer. ...Hope to see more.

That was MIND BLOWING! I'm amazed about the fact that you play those astounding patterns with complete authority. What I don't understand is how you've learned to play such complex parts. I'm a guitar player.

my mind has been blown. Everything I have heard is a lie, I've listened and watched, and you are the best drummer I have ever seen. Seriously, who the fuck has EVER done flam taps on the fucking bass drum? Then FIVES right after it! That is insane, it is idescribeable how much I want to be like you

Thank you! Those two licks feature pretty standard stickings, as this was the first Periph tune that I ever 'Orbinated'.' It's the tempo at which the subdivisions are played (8th and 16th triplets) that makes it challenging. The rest of the album is going to have some very twisted stuff on it, hehe. Anyway... ! The first lick is a flam drag that does not alternate: lR ll R lR ll R etc. (bass drum tries it's best to lock in with the unaccented portion of the flam)

i was the first to watch and comment oh yea...just so everyone who checks this out knows this guy is my teacher and he can do all that stuff at the speed hes doing in the video..i know it might be hard for (those of you who don't play to this level)to comprehend that he can play that fast and powerful but ive seen it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears its real-insane!

Thank you, Mike! Actually, this is the setup that I've been utilizing with Periphery since I joined the band. My 'personal/practice' setup is the same configuration except with a 10" tom in front of the snare drum; it's like a four piece kit both ways. I use the Mike Mangini signature sticks, manufactured by Zildjian.

The sixteenths that land on the quarter note downbeat are played with two feet, as I can 'time' them better for whatever reason. However, all of the others are played with only the right foot.

@TravisOrbin
@TravisOrbin 16 лет назад
...and that's probably due to the fact that I worked out "Insomnia" before I implemented this system. It's also before I started plugging the 16th note subdivision into my metronome and mic'ing my bass drum and feeding it into my mixer (which then goes into my in-ear monitors).
@domakent
@domakent 11 лет назад
I remember when this video first was posted. It changed drumming for me, especially the section with the fast and numerous ghost notes (1:20) which actually appeared in one version of "The Walk". Or was it "Letter Experiment". Can't remember that detail.
@MattFrault

Flam accents on the bass drum is a fuckin win....Flams applied to a bass drum in general are a fuckin win!
@TravisOrbin
@TravisOrbin 16 лет назад
The second lick features the inverted single paradiddle with an 8th note displacement (three-note 'rll' sticking displaces it): rllrrL rllrll rrLrll rllrrL rllrrL (bass drum plays the 'r' of each 'rll')
@KTMownage

hey np man, thats good that u guys are still cool with casey... do you mind if i ask what pedals you use??
@TravisOrbin
@TravisOrbin 16 лет назад
Haha GP, I'll never go back to paper again for stuff like this. I still use it for jotting down ideas on and off of the kit though, obviously. It isn't just the raw tab; do you remember how I tabbed in GP? I would tab the notes on the staff in the exact order of how they'd look as sheet music. The sheet music is also included, as well as a detailed explanation of the drum key, tempi markings, and other little nuances such as stickings/'footings,' odd-note grouping markers, and various notes.
@TravisOrbin

Thank you! No, Misha programs the drums for Bulb with Drum Kit From Hell Superior/Nuendo.

You are an awesome player.. What kind of sticks do you use? They look like they taper out like the Vater Dave Silverias, for the fat accents but sweet finger control. Cheers
@TravisOrbin
@TravisOrbin 16 лет назад
Thanks so much! Yah, the complexity of a lot of drum parts can be obscured by the mix (Mr. Mangini could certainly attest to this!; thus, the plan to do the DVD! Shoot me $2.00 if you'd like a note-for-note transcription of the ending and everything else in this video.

I was always hoping you'd do a "Periphery Playalong" for Next Please. Then I realized you played the only part I was interested in how a human could possibly play it. And, god dammit, you are not a human being.

@TravisOrbin
@TravisOrbin 16 лет назад
After composing my parts I start at half of the performance tempo to build solid, precise muscle memory. I then work my way up in five or ten BPM increments until I arrive at performance tempo. On a side note, I've actually been starting at ten BPM below half tempo because the parts that I'm writing for the first album are absolutely absurd, haha. I need to go back and redo "Insomnia," as it's nowhere near as tight as I'd like it to be.
@futilityvt
@futilityvt 16 лет назад
Very cool stuff, there aren't many people out there who take the time to learn to play flam rudiments with their feet. I don't suppose you would be nice enough to post the two double stroke roll licks at the 1:53-1:58ish mark? :)

Thanks so much! Just to clear this up, if by 'learn' you meant to learn Misha's programmed drums, that only accounts for about 5-10% of the tunes. Everything else is my own programming after 'Orbinating' (a term the band came up with long ago, hehe) the drum parts. We'll get to England eventually, trust me. About half of our fanbase resides there, haha.
