An excellent peek into the daily life of an experienced boat fisherman. Thanks, it was great. Those skate looked so good, I’d like a couple for my freezer as I love them slow baked in plenty of butter!
awwright Timmy me ole mate, great film and great to see Mersea Island and the coast again, don't remember all those windymills tho! Hollywood will be calling next! Best regards, Maff
That was awesome! I totally appreciate watching a gent like Tim fish...I come from a long line of Sicilian Commercial Fishermen My father and I still fish off my great grandfather’s 1928 Monterey Clipper F/V Golden Gate, Fishermen’s Wharf, Pier 45, San Francisco 💪🏻
Hi Antonio many thanks for your comments! I’m sure you would be interested to see my TONNARA video on the same RU-vid channel filmed in Sicily back in 2000 regards David
a great insight into your world of fishing bud i gave up 15 years ago after 25 years, dont miss it to be honest, hard life fishing most days weather permitting, used to tow a lot longer though, im sure you have your reasons,,thanks for sharing bud
Just a way of life just same as cattle some go and new born and sane as us nothing wrong with fishing in moderation and then let the stocks renew .And I'm not a fisherman nor am I after an argument. Just my opinion
Great video I used to work on a boat called “ The Boy Gordon” on Aberdeen inshore fishing went out 12 or so miles heading east and as far south as Stonehaven and up North as far as Peterhead ,got on board at 6 and worked till well when we got done and I only ever worked her and the skipper was legit and the pay was fair enough. Good times on that wee boat 🏴🫡
I’ve worked out there on and off for years and I swear I’ve been on that boat as a kid, I’m from Faversham too where she was built, some of the best things we trolled up were World War II parachute minds the size is a 40 gallon drums the military used to come and meet us and blow them up at sea. Great memories 👍🏾
@@scottessery100 Yes Scott, no fishery will survive without proper management. Without a sustainable breeding population no species has a chance at survival.
@@davemitchell6281 Are you American Dave? China is not a military threat but they are an economic threat, no country can compete with them now with manufacturing. They are making their money through manufacturing and buying infrastructure around the world. Governments need to put a stop to it with legislation, not missiles.
Hi we used to catch Ray out of Belfast Harbour, a little forty footer great time and money we made. Ray the size of two boxes .the boat was also adapted for three a side for scallops in portaferry, Stratford lough.the size of dinner plates, but not anymore. Only me ALASDAIR And the skipper, not going to say his name, good fishing had by all. I would live in a boat and fish all my life given the chance
Excellent video, Now that's a real man, working for a living. To all the keyboard eco-warriors out there whinging about bi catch etc. If you buy and eat fish from the supermarket you have no argument.
When we fish for Ray/Skate we never throw the guts out on the trawling grounds. Keep them om board till we are out of the area.Old fishermen always reckoned would frighten the Ray off the ground. :)
What bugs me is I love fish but can't afford it in UK but when i go to france which is quite often for work, the fish is so much cheaper and i can bring it home, how is that possible?,
Because most of the fish caught in British waters are species that aren't popular in Britain so get exported and the fish Brits do like have to be imported.
We sell all our fish to France and Spain, hmu and I’ll give you good prices (I’m a fisherman myself) on any skat, place, bass, dover sole, Lemmon sole the lot!
Thanks for a very professional film on a very interesting topic. Two observations : firstly, as Tim intimated, in the next 15 years this will probably be no more as young people are just not interested in this type of hard work anymore. Secondly, trawling in the Thames estuary all day and not another ship of any description seen? I find that strange.
Seems a nice guy my only concirn is whatevers on bottom gets swept up and whennit goes back its dead most time but thats trawlling we cant do without them and this guys living. The real big trawllers take tons he takes nowhere near ..iam an angler river salmon and sea comps ect up north in 20 years the seas will be dead if we arnt carefull nothing to do with this lad hes a propppppaaaaa fisherman takes what he needs i think ..
@Neil Foster what an excellent occasion to have the fishing grounds recuperate from overfishing whilst people can get used to higher prices. In five years there will be more British boats, provided there are still welders in the UK. Oh yes and ban the bigger trawlers, no matter foreign or domestic.
Tim, would you like a helping deck hand free of charge? Well free of wages but all the fish I can eat. I aint as young as I'd like, but with practice, I could be good at Skating.
He says he don't go out far these days cause of his age .most cod haddock pollack and big fish are in deep seas and off wrecks thats why all rays and soles
Thanks for the film. I found it very interesting. I think there are some very sad aspects but we really need to see where fish come from and how. And this is of course just one way. Humans don't do sustainability but it's harsh to blame fishermen who have just had to adapt to the next thing. I think we could actually pay off the fishermen if there was a better way to stop emptying the ocean. I mean we pay for many people who do absolutely nothing. This has more virtue than that. We need to start farming more seafood.
Farming seafood is not the solution and is probably worse thing you can do, it can destroy ecosystems therefore killing off further species. Please look up Norwegian farmed salmon and how toxic they are and how they are impacting their local ecosystem. Farming is not sustainable either, soils get depleted just as the oceans do, we need to give the ocean a break...
@@GP30277 I think all forms of net caught fish should be seriously looked at, the bycatch is truly dreadful. Line caught is much less harmful as is shellfish farming.
In France they have a witness on board students learning not just in France but fishing needs to evolve and the fact that man doesn't know how much he be payed or can't hire a young one listen we need to sit down cite what's wrong and act as if we will make a difference and we will.
Same same and Spanish before them hai its not what I'm saying.. I said to have a witness on board constructive helpful and collect data share tag that 80-90% grab certain species but not for the money for care understandings biology science education how and what's wrong with this see-saw of laws suiting only very few!! We need to grow evolution witnesses shitshai! 👌 and just when our men got money or could afford the boats they had restrictions from certain
Thanks for that it’s very interesting how the younger kids want nothing to do with trawling. It’s got to be better than being out of work and getting into trouble. 👍🏻🇦🇺
@@bradfordpal i think the first thing they need to do is get out on a boat and see if they can handle it. Then get a job on a boat and save save save if it’s a profession that you like. I’m sure the prices for boats are a bit lower than they used to be. By the way shouldn’t you be Hadrian Walls? 👍🏻🇦🇺
@@bradfordpal I’m not going there Hadrian! Not enough time in the day for conspiracy theories thanks. I do say one thing though i wouldn’t put anything past the Americans.
It takes 2 people on board, is it getting sick, or something else. I am with a full crew of 6. Il faut 2 personnes a bord, est s'il tomber malade, ou autre chose. Moi je suis avec un équipage de 6 personnes au complet
@@scottessery100 why isnt there more fish?? Because trawlers like this, along with other commercial fishing methods have absolutely destroyed the marine habitat. Every one of them that sinks at sea is a bonus 👍
He was doing test hauls. If he left the net down all day it would be a waste. Short test hauls and the next day much longer tows on the more productive areas
What the hell do they do with them, we throw them back, we catch them all the time while summer flounder fishing here in the northeast...... never thought of eating them
@@cyclingdave45 Rubbish. He has no way of knowing. There was no gill movement. They were out of the water a long time - too long. Guy is a fool - wonders why there are so few alternative quarries. Longlining is at least a little less destructive.
@@stephenm8133 I agree,we know a bloke has to make a crust but this mentality is from the old times.Touchy subject as it's all he knows but in reality this is environmental rape.
I'd love to be a small time coastal fishermen and live a life on the sea. One problem: BUREAUCRACY. Most of the rules, regulations and costs are set up to favour corporate fleets as it's easier to manage a few companies than 100's of small operators. It's sad. Here in Australia, an ISLAND nation we import 75% of our seafood!! If you were to start up a small operation today, you wouldn't get much change from half a million to a million dollars depending on the fishery. Forget about tuna or rock lobster 🦞. You'd need six to ten million.
