The Dusty Motors chassis shroud is a very good, very practical idea. Small stones and sand chronically galled the anodized drive shaft and fowled the chassis on my Rustler 4X4. I ordered 100 disposable surgical/food service elastic hair nets for $8.99 on Amazon. I fashioned a guard/tunnel out of construction paper to keep the hair net from ever entangling in the drive shaft, then I fit the hair net over top using two rubber bands and an inch or two of duct tape. No more than fine dust now gets into the chassis, mechanics, and electronics when I run my Rustler on natural desert terrain. Only $32 and I no longer need 're-fit' a new a hair net each time. I'll wait till I run out of hair nets since the Dusty Motors is currently back-ordered.

I ran a rubber hose around the driveshaft right where it enters the chassis with a clearance close enough to keeping larger debris out of the driveshaft channel and diff gear. A small piece of foam over the diff but takes care of most of the remaining debris. That shroud would do the work but here in the Central Valley it’s hot most of the year so that wouldn’t work. That body though, definitely next on my list. My stock slash 4x4 body has seen better days

I would like a 'Bash armor' body in a 'Rustler' open-wheel style. My OEM body is a bit ragged around the edges after just 4 months. I've been fitting disposable, elastic, poly hair nets for surgeons or food preparation ($7 to $10 for 100) over my chassis using duct tape bits and a rubber band. The 'Dusty Motors' solution seems far more convenient. However, I'd like to know more about the 'heating' issue. The disposable hairnets I'm using do not seem to cause "air-flow" problems as mentioned, but they are time consuming to fit each session. Is the Dusty Motors cover inherently more thermal in nature, being overly paranoid, or simply prophylactic?
@AMain_Hobbies
@AMain_Hobbies 4 года назад
It's just a warning they provide to cover their butt because there are so many variables to consider. If you're in a colder climate, the mesh will probably never be an issue. If you're in a +100°F area, you will have heat issues with or without the mesh. It also depends on how you drive your car. If you accelerate hard and come to a full stop and repeat repeatedly, you'll generate a lot of heat, with or without the mesh. It's a very fine mesh and does limit air flow as compared to using no mesh. It is a very convenient to use and installs in seconds. I recommend it. -Brett

@robbryan3044
@robbryan3044 5 лет назад
I was thinking the exact same thing. Even worse than this mesh shroud are the ones made from Lexan (whoever came up with this idea deserves a SEVERE lashing, or 20), and other solid materials. NEVER use a solid shroud...and, unless you live where temps are below the low-to-mid 80s, I would HIGHLY suggest avoiding a mesh shroud. The Lexan wheelwells, on the other hand, could prove a very smart idea...as long as you don't use the middle piece (exactly as mentioned in the video, it would disrupt the air flow. In some ways, the AMain videos remind me of Top Gear (the original group)...sometimes they're excellent, & and incredibly informative; at other times, they're really dumb, and might even suggest (as in this video) doing things that you REALLY should AVOID doing. That being said, even with videos like this, I still enjoy watching them.

@@robbryan3044 well put. I have a dusty shroud and it only gets used in the winter when I run paddle tires. Sure, snow gets on the mesh and blocks airflow, but better than snow compacting inside the chassis and insulating everything

I have the Slash Ultimate. The first mods were fans for ESC and motor, because they overheated and the system kept shutting down, and the Dusty motors cover to keep debris and dirt out. It works well. The mesh allows enough airflow to get the heat out and keep it running without overheating. Running 2S and no desert temps, that is.

There is a massive difference between 5 mil lexan and lexan that is 5 mm thick I guarantee that body is not 5 mm thick. If you were to place the Fender flares on the shot post itself under the retaining ring for the body you would not have to use the pro line body mounts

@@AMain_Hobbies When using fans on the motor and ESC, the cooling proved to be sufficient with the shroud closed. It fits and the mesh allows enough airflow to let the fans do their job. Even in our European summer (heat upto 40 degrees C.). And the shroud keeps water spray out. I try to avoid running my Slash through water, though.

Another Great video. I have a dusty motors shroud for my slash LCG but I knew it would hold heat so I got the green one. The black one will heat up quickly and hold the heat for a longer just because it’s black. I don’t have the body or the wheel wells though. The shroud does a great job. Dust will still get in with other things that can thread itself through the gaps. It’s still better that not having anything. I also have fans ready to learn how to wire them up to a lipo battery safely. but I can’t seem to find anything on RU-vid to do it. I just want to set up the twin fans for the motor and i also have a scorched parts esc fan for it. BUT I don’t want it plugged into my receiver because I want to be able to remove them quickly when it rains or if I’m driving it in water. Could you help with that?
@AMain_Hobbies
@AMain_Hobbies 5 лет назад
I like the idea! What voltage do the fans require? To connect to the battery you'd need a middle connector wire that plugs into the ESC like the battery would, and then the battery connects on the other end, and in the middle, this jumper wire would have your fan leads coming off of it. If you use Traxxas connectors, they are really hard to buy, and you would need one female and one male. Does this make any sense? I could email you a picture of what i'm thinking. -Brett

I’ve been looking since the beginning of winter & everyone keeps saying “just plug it into the receiver” so thank you🙏
@AMain_Hobbies
@AMain_Hobbies 5 лет назад
From those specs, wiring the 8.4V rated fan directly to a 11.1V 3S battery will be too much voltage for the fans. You will need 2S LiPo's, or find 11.1V rated fans, or just wire the fans directly to the receiver. You could probably use a receiver wire extension that would sit outside the receiver box for a quick connect setup? If you still want to shoot an email, it's brettb@amain.com-Brett
