These aren't like the crumpets you'll find at the supermarket, but in my opinion so much better and more filling - full crumpet recipe / oven baked crumpet recipe written below.
This was a recreation of my very first youtube video as it's been five years since I started and my first video really was just me playing - but wanted to re-do it so I had something a bit more clear to share with people! For those who want to laugh at the original attempt here you go: • How to make CRUMPETS!

Tray Baked Crumpets / Oven Baked Crumpets Recipe :
In a large bowl, mix in 1.5 cups of Milk with 1.5 cups of Boiling Water
Add 1.5 dessertspoons of Breadmakers Yeast and mix to combine
Add 3 cups of Plain Flour
1/2 a teaspoon of Salt
1.5 teaspoons of Baking Soda
Mix well with a beater until the mixture is smooth
Keep on mixing while slowly adding flour (I added about another 1.5 cups) until it gets to a consistency where it's travelling up the beaters and looking slightly gluey.
Cover and leave to rise for approx 1 hour.
Thoroughly oil a lipped oven tray and preheat the oven and the tray to 150oC.
Pour the batter in - it might be a bit "gluggy" so smooth it out until it's reasonably even.
Bake for approx 15 minutes - preferably just using the bottom element to heat from just underneath, otherwise just put it at the bottom of the oven.
Turn out onto the bench and wait until it's cool before slicing.
Crumpets will need to be toasted and depending on preference sliced as shown before putting on toppings!

Just a note ... if you find you have trouble getting the bubbles through the crumpet mixture, try baking them at the bottom of the oven (as I say, if you can just use the bottom element then bonus!) and leave the oven door slightly open this seems to get more bubbles! Might have to cook for a bit longer with the door open but worth it for bubbles lol

I'm definitely "your people"! If you left the dough to rise in the baking tray for 30 minutes or so prior to baking, I would expect much more bubbles/airy crumpets. 😉

Oh I never thought of that ... I'll have to experiment ... I always listen to advice from "my people" haha

@@CheaperWaysNZ Don't we all! Thanks for your reply. I've JUST made some circular normal crumpets for the first time. Something went wrong as they look good, taste good, but have no bubbles / holes! The bubbles appeared and then closed up again. I think the pan recipe is wrong. I will persevere. I love your accent! I have a friend from Dunedin who lives here now and he now finds N Zealanders sound strange! (Keep it on hind! My tint is wit !) Great fun! England is in the middle of a mini-heatwave. We get 3 days of summer... it will be snowing in weeks! It's so weird (for me) to think that June is Winter for you! I guess you have just had Christmas there!!

haha ... I remember going back for a holiday (I'm from England originally so visiting family) ... and coming back to NZ and thinking oh no I don't sound like that 😂. Took us quite a lot of trial and error with the crumpet recipe, but in the oven I find if I leave the door open I get a lot more bubbles

YAY! This was the recipe that first brought me to this channel. I was looking for a way to use up excess sourdough starter, and it worked brilliantly!

Looks good, other than the bottom being overdone. I'm a fan of recipes like this. I do this with pancakes. Sure beats making them one at a time in a pan, are six at a time on our little electric griddle.

Hi Sarah, my 4th try now, is the 150c on Bake or Fan bake? At least this one looks the best but still in oven. Thanks
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ Год назад
I just have it on standard Bake, and if you can just turn the element on the bottom of the oven, but yeah just standard bake should be fine (some oven temperatures might vary or you might need to leave it in for longer maybe?)

Hi , I made these today, but didn't get as much as you. Could I be measuring too exact? Also did you use a Tablespoon or Dessert spoon for the yeast. They tasted nice and will try again.
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ Год назад
I used 1.5 dessertspoons (so about 15ml worth) of yeast ... could also be variable maybe with how much flour you add while mixing? Sometimes I find I need a bit more or sometimes a bit less, or could even be a slightly different sized tray you're pouring it into maybe? Glad they worked out well though!

Why didn't you use just a normal crumpet recipe? :)
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 7 месяцев назад
We tried this and it worked for doing them individually, but it just took so long cooking the circles 3-4 at a time in the pan it ended up taking way too long to make the amount we needed for a few days worth, hence why we experimented until we came up with a version that worked in a tray (the normal recipe didn't work in a tray!)
