Recipe:
Combine 750ml of boiling water and 750ml of milk into a bowl
Add 3 tablespoons of yeast, mix to combine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes
Add 6 cups of plain flour, 3 teaspoons of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of salt
Mix all thoroughly, gradually adding more flour until the mixture starts riding up the beaters (refer to the video around 10 minute mark to see what I mean!).
Let it sit for 2-3 hours until risen and bubbly
Pour into a oven tray with sides and cook in a preheated oven at 150oC for about 12 minutes

I watched this video years ago and thought it was amazing, I've kept it in the back of my mind for it such an occasion called for it. Well finally my husband got fed up with the premade crumpets going mouldy, no matter how they are stored, open or not, within 24 hours of being purchased. So I am going to make these finally! Thank you so much for your channel, I keep coming back to old videos and love all the new ones. You are an inspiration to me. I love the frugality, the creativity and I love watching you with your kids and husband, very much like my own family.

Hi, Geroge Pierce by way of your Facebook comment, thank you. This video is a pleasure to watch and your views prove it. More keywords in your description might help your videos rank even more and a 'hook' on your thumbnail such as your tractor vid might get more CTR. Fantastic video. I was looking for a way to bake crumpets in the oven, and this worked very well indeed. My trays are rubbish, but a bit of baking paper did the trick. The reason for making crumpets? I had a heap of "sourdough starter discard" that I wanted to use up. The starter makes a good rise, and the baking powder makes the bubbles. Totally agree that cooking crumpets in a pan takes FOREVER! Thanks again for the great video. Now... 100 biscuits? Maybe next!

@kiwibigt6684

A group here has tried the grow and self mill some older variety wheats but the time and effort involved out weighs the benifits. We can buy organic wheat very cheaply to mill but have found we still need to bring in some white flour to produce good bread.

That's a lot of yeast? When I make bread, it's about that many teaspoons, not tablespoons?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 2 года назад
Just what seems to work for this recipe - and yes I use about one tablespoon for a loaf of bread too 🙂 ... we did a lot of playing with this recipe but if you find less still works well then great (probably depends on the type of yeast / room temperature etc too)

hi my children have severe allergies do you think this will work with almond milk?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 6 лет назад
I don't see why not - I've actually started making them with the whey left over from making greek yoghurt instead of milk and that works really well, I imagine almond milk would be a bit watery like that (just guessing I'm not sure!), but would be interesting to try!
@rustydog1236

I tried this last night, and didn't seem to get as many holes as even you did. The bubbles sealed off rather than popping.
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 4 года назад
Yeah sometimes they can be temperamental - maybe if the room isn't quite warm enough or they don't rise as much they end up without as many bubbles, it was a bit of trial & error for us (although still nice enough!).
@markchapman6800
@markchapman6800 4 года назад
@@CheaperWaysNZ Thanks. I've just had two, and even after nearly 15 minutes in a 150 degree C oven last night, then toasting, they didn't seem quite done.
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 4 года назад
@@markchapman6800 Oh bummer - yeah as I say it was trial & error for us and we altered it quite a lot from the original recipe we were given - I wonder if your oven needs to be hotter maybe?
@markchapman6800
@markchapman6800 4 года назад
@@CheaperWaysNZ I thought that my oven's temp is a bit low, so gave it an extra 10 degrees anyway, but I'll make a note that even that wasn't enough. I've just given the remaining ones a once-over in a hotter oven, and I'll see tomorrow how that went (I've had enough for today :-) Thanks.
3 года назад
@@markchapman6800 same problem. On 150 degs, after 12 mins my batter was still liquid. So I then upped the oven to 170 degs and had it in there for 20 mins - it eventually set, but was totally pale and the surface had sealed over without popping. I think next time I will do it at 180 from the start, or even 200. Also, looking at the video the baking tray seems right down low, very close to the heating element of the oven bottom.

Your recipe says 6 cups of flour but your video says 7 cups, which one please?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 4 года назад
Ah ok ... that's where it's a bit variable! I put in 6 cups initially and then do the mix ... then I usually find it needsa around one more cup to make it the right consistency (hence why this is a hard recipe to write down!) ... I always find it mixes easier if I just start with six and when it's a smooth consistency I add more until it's the right texture 🙂

haha - well I think the definition alters depending on what country you're in - here in NZ they're usually very light, airy things (wow great description - lol), with holes in them, often served with butter and/or treacle/golden syrup. I think in America they might have a different name or crumpets might be considered something different … but rest assured whatever you call the thingies I make in this video they're great - lol
