I think the unicron trilogy has the most solid design philosophy for Megatron. Armada Megatron is armed to the teeth with all sorts of hidden weaponry, fitting for a tyrannical warlord who has been fighting for millions of years. Prepared for every encounter and every battle. Energon Megatron was him rebuilt into a new form by himself with no restrictions. He basically looks like what the Armada Megatron would imagine the ruler of the galaxy to look like. Wings, tons of weaponry, a vehicle mode to show off air superiority, a majestic masculine design and a crown to go with it. Cybertron Megatron is the culmination of the entire Unicron Trilogy. After being in contact with Unicron for the entire duration of Energon, it would make sense that he would finally complete the fusion. He is the ultimate Dark Lord, the final boss, the Emperor of Destruction often referenced by the japanese transformers series, and is no mere mortal transformer.
Megatron’s design ethic in the unicron trilogy is an absolute explosion. A fun explosion, like a glitter bomb rather than a pipe bomb, but an explosion nonetheless.
Fellow Scum-Bag here: I agree. Energon Megatron isn't as good as Armada Megatron. But the deluxe version that came in a 2-pack with Deluxe energon Prime was a much more fun figure. No lights & sounds but was FAR more poseable. Now, Cybertron Megatron review next?
i dig the minty fresh deco, definitely not expected of the big bad guy toy. also like just how insane the weapon is, just carrying around his old mode like a shed cicada skin with a cannon and popsicle on it. hope this design gets revisited.
I like the part in the show where Megatron dips in a pool of Energon and comes out as Galvatron. It's like the time I took a bath so good that I renamed myself GiganticPunchline.
Both Armada and Energon Megatron figure have their strengths and Weaknesses. Armada has several gimmicks which are fun, but the only leg movement is for Transforming. Energon has more articulation, gimmicks are also good but attaching the drone limits articulation. But I have both, and i really enjoy them.
I was looking into picking this guy up yesterday but wasn't sure how well I'd like him in hand, making this review of an 18 year old toy very timely and insightful. Thank you Gavin
1:30 OH MY GOD, I ACTUALLY GOT THAT!! Cash register noises, right? It's been yeeeeeears since I was a kid staying up late as hell to watch that on whatever channel it was that had reruns of it. About all I remmeber now was the general look of the set, and Mr. Humphries saying, "I'm free!"
"Do you review transformers? Are you a scumbag?" No and yes, respectively. Okay, I review them in my mind, but that just makes me even more of a scumbag for not sharin' it with anybody.
@@TRDQ But I'm also a scumbag, so you see my problem. I mean, I _would,_ but I don't wanna. I may be a scumbag, but I'm also a lazy sod. ...... I should probably look into getting that fixed, but that would mean actually _doing_ something. Decisions, decisions.
This is the only Megatron from the Unicron Trilogy I own unless you want to count the CW Armada Megs repaint. I love how chunky he is. I wouldn't mind having the other 2 but for now I can enjoy this big lad.
this (well, the Galvatron version) was the first Transformer I ever owned, he will always hold a special place in my heart, I've gotten rid of a few of my older transformers as i age, but this one stuck around and will stick around
I just recently fixed up one of these guys I had in a parts bin, 3D printed a new head to make it Shattered Glass Megs. Gotta love that this figure is the genesis of the look of SG Megatron, for sure. Not that I ever cared for Shattered Glass before the recent IDW run. And me, personally, I like it better than Armada Megs. I sold off the Armada Megs I fixed up, but kept this guy. Armada Megs always looked like some bastard misfit child of Scorponok. And while that description should make it awesome, it somehow didn't for me.
Great video! Thank you! I have both this version and the Galvatron-colours version of the mould, and while I really enjoyed them at the time, and they look bloody impressive . . . yeah, they're cumbersome slabs of weird joints. If I'd known 20 years ago that we'd end up with several amazing official Galvatrons in the space of a few months, I'd've left these on the shelves. But that's something to keep in mind for when I manage to travel back in time. As for being a scumbag . . . well, I TRY not to be. I review some TransFormers, some Star Wars, some MOTU, some random odds 'n' sods . . . and beers / boozes / beverages. Been doing "Action Figures & Their Beers" since January 2009.
I review Transformers AND I'm a scumbag 😅❤ I remember when I got this toy and Energon Tidal Wave as a kid I was SO MAD they couldn't combine because someone had told me that they could but they clearly meant the Armada Megs :') I love the design of this Megatron but I agree hes just too limited to be really fun. I think having this toy as a kid is why I appreciate Kingdom Galvatron so much even though its a completely different alt mode, the *vibe* is there between the two and I would adore a new version of Energon Megs based on the Galvatron mould somehow
This is absurd literally half an hour ago I get home and I find that the Energon Megatron I ordered has come, I check RU-vid and you've uploaded a review what are the chances? Oh wow that little targeting visor thing is that where Meg Tyranno's cannon on that corner of the tank comes from? That's a such a cool pull. I've never been as pulled towards Energon Megatron like I have Armada and Cybertron's but enough people have liked the guy that I thought I'll give him a shot and I haven't opened him yet but I hope I like him even if its almost impossible to live up to his successor and predecessor.
still one of my favourite megatron designs if only for it’s what i grew up with, i admire how bold he looks even if it’s very not megatron and even if the toy cant move for shit, he just has such a presence
Gavin, what are you on about, mate? Carrying A WHOLE EFFING TANK as a sidearm is not meant to be practical, it's a _statement._ Sure, Armada Megatron is never gonna be dethroned, but that's because that toy is an 11/10, with Energon Megatron being an easy 10/10 for me. Also, look at those minty colours, when has Megatron looked so fresh since?
I don’t review Transformers (unless you include telling young children that no toy they have in their childhood will ever be as good) but I am absolutely a scumbag.
Strange, that tank/sword arm setup looks a lot like the kibble-chunk the Earthrise (and G2 deco) Megatron has. Wonder if it was a convenient inspiration point?
To be fair, that is Galvatron…in Japan, anyway. Speaking of Japan, it’s a shame that The only way to get Galvatron’s big mean sword He used for the earlier half of the anime was through a convention exclusive That had limited pieces. The tank sword thing is neat, but it’s no substitute for a big nasty sword to swing around. Moreso when said sword gets mass produced By the auto bots. I know way too much of about a show that I Consider completely unwatchable in either language.
You're not wrong. I review transformers. By your formula, I'm a scumbag. I've done some soul searching, kicked a few puppies, unscrewed the salt shakers in restaurants, and have come to the determination that Rumble is blue. So yeah, I guess I'm a scumbag.
I can't say the armada megatron is better personally, but I really do enjoy the energon megatron a lot, I got the galavtron repaint since last year and he is honestly really fun to mess with.
I say this is a better figure than Armada. And that's comming from someone who LIKE'S the Armada desighn over Energon. Other than that, the tank cannon makes this figure a bit unbalanced, but it is a neat accesory.
I don't think comparing this to Armada Megatron is fair, because despite being from the Unicron Trilogy, they are really two entirely different figures altogether, with their own pros and cons. If they were near enough the same figure with slight differences, then it would be fair.
I don't review transformers but I AM a scumbag. I've got the Superlink version of this in the purple Galvatron colours, I think maybe Hasbro over-egged it by super-sizing the mould for the Western release.
What’s the in universe explanation for Megatron being accompanied by a smaller version of a different form of himself? Is it his son? Please say it’s his son.
It's actually a good match for the character in the show! Not as good, but still good. No Megatron matches the sheer audacity of Armada Megatron, and if you disagree you can go idk, eat an egg
