I'm 35 and just started taking swimming lessons for the first time. My goal this year is to learn how to swim and this video answers alot of fears and perceptions I have about treading. What I found extra helpful was at the end of the video where you said "most people can't tread water for hours... I only use it in emergencies...for the most part, you want to be by the wall." I always thought that people who knew how to swim could tread forever, I had no idea how much energy it takes just to thread cause everyone seems so relaxed when they do it. I found this very helpful thank you!
I went to swimming classes maybe for 2 months and a half 3 times a week and I only learned how to swim free style... but never learned how to tread water... if I stop my free style I sink like a brick... I'm decided to learn how to swim properly this year... let's try your method! thanks for the tips!!
Same here. Instructor was good. But man where is the logic in teaching me breaststroke but if If I stop I just sink. Treading water should have been a first thing to learn and also in deep end of the pool. Then you can move on to teaching a student swim styles.
Try controlling how you sink... Stay near a wall, when you reach the bottom, jump as high as you can, grip the wall, and repeat until you feel comfortable
I think your exercises about how to trade water may have saved my life. I was doing it the wrong way, and I was sinking and I did not know why. I know now the reason. Thank you so much !!!
I hate noodles in deep water because I i don't have control of how I'm floating and sometimes I'm I might float to the middle of the deep end and I get screwed
Hey Justin Patrick I watched your videos before covid and overcomed my fear in deep water . I became very good and confident thanks to your helpful videos . Thank you so much man
Hi! I was able to tread and I was really surprised, but after a couple minutes of me realizing I could do it, I think I started getting tense or a bit panicky and I couldn't do it for the rest of the time I went swimming, I think my body was used to me doing it incorrectly
How do you get the coordination for this treading water movement of moving your arms in a particular manner while moving your legs in a totally DIFFERENT manner?! :-)
You actualy can tread for hour if you just slow down with wide and ample arms movement with palm facing the bottom of the pool instead of going that fast
thank you so much for making these videos!! these have helped me so so much and now I can swim thanks to your help and my swimming teacher's. I told him about you and he is happy that you are inspiring me to swim! keep up inspiring me and others :)
Just watching the egg beater motion made my knees hurt. I just try to avoid treading water whenever possible. The flutter kick way doesnt work for me either since in apparently made of lead. So I just hang out on my back most of the time.
2nd time watching one of his videos. Love his energy when he explains things 🙂. He's always breathless while explaining and full of energy and excited. That's a skill in and of itself.
I almost drowned when my class was treading for 45 seconds in 2.9m but good thing i was by the wall i just told my teacher i was tired but the truth was i wasn’t very good at treading i am nervous for today
Used to be scared of swimming when I was very young, then my parents forced me to have swimming lessons then a day later I was the best in the batch, really all you have to do is jump and relax and you will soon know how to swim.
Actually, if you just breathe right and hold your arms flat and relaxed inside the water, the way you'd put your arms on the bar counter and let your legs loose, you should find yourself floating even in deep water. I've found that I don't need to move at all and I'm naturally afloat. I don't know why that happens but I'm just letting you know how I hold my body in the water.
I’m 6 feet and I can tread water in 5 foot deep water. So yes you can practice in the shallow end and it will be effective for the deep end. Same concept.
Love this video, for the treading, everybody learn from iT. Thank you. Justine. And yes we learn to relax and practice in the pool. Not easy really. For beginners to do.
@Justin Patrick that really helped me thank you for telling me that moving your legs around and around really helps something else that I didn’t know moving your hand side to side Like you just showed me really helped because I was told by my horrible teachers that you have to pretends to run in the water which always made me sink to the bottom thank you Justin Patrick for telling me the true way of treading water this is really going to help because I’ve had a hard time in the education system where teachers told me false information about what is to do you seem to be a really good teacher thank you you don’t get good teachers nowadays from what me and my friend have experienced our teachers told us certain False formation that never helped 🔥👏🏻
I'm enjoying your videos, thanks for posting. I also like how mathematical you've made swim with X and Y axis. I use vertical and horizontal because I don't "math." Keep up the good work!
Hi Justin! I have a problem with swimming. Whenever I come up for a breath, I get less air than the last time I came up. For example, I breath the maximum amount of air, then I breath less and less every time! Please help!
Exterel YT OMG same here! I only get to inhale so much air from the very first breath I take in and then as I'm swimming and coming out to inhale air I can only do it for 1 second and I feel like that isn't enough time for me
Exterel YT exactly what's happening with me and I get super tired and feel like passing out cos of less oxygen.. This is why I can't freestyle properly although I know the strokes and all but breathing is stressful.. I need a huge breath to keep myself going but in freestyling you don't have that much time to breathe sufficient enough
Exterel YT you use up more oxygen bcs youre swimming underwater so you need to breathe in more frequently. its like running, after some time youll get tired and have to rest to get back up on the track. i mean seriously its not that hard to figure out logics im 14 and its simple af
i'm currently 26, never learned how to swim because I'm scared of the water when it gets to my mouth I had a little practice today but no progress so far now I'm going to try your method, hope it works
I'll be purchasing a noodle before the next time I go to the pool. My last instructor told me I'm a natural sinker and so I have to work much harder. She also didn't say anything about a motion. Just that I have to displace a whole lot of water with my arms and legs.
Justin, I am in the Army and I have a 100 meter swim coming up, if full uniform (no boots) upon completing 100 meters, I must take my entire uniform off in the deep end without touching any walls, I already suck at swimming and the extra weight doesn't help, what should I do?
Thank you soooooooooooooo much i been to the water park every second Day In 4 months and finally learn it now i jump to the deep water Thanks soooo much
I really like your videos, you do an AMAZING job with the fact that swimming is scary, but you keep mentioning that treading is tiring. I'm gonna have to disagree. You look like you're still working pretty hard. Relax some more, and worry about your form less. Treading shouldn't be any more tiring than walking.
1.day one i leant how to swim 2.day two i practiced my swiming 3.day three i leart how to float on my back using my arms 4.day four i learnt how to float on my bacj without using my arms or legs 5. Tomorrow i'll try treading water
Hi justin,Can you make a video on how to overcome a fear of diving boards I know how to tread and swim deep but I can't get over the fear of jumping off a diving board or going off slides that let off in water deeper than 4ft!I don't understand why my mind does this to me!!HELP
I honestly just keep pushing up and moving around so I stay above, I don't use a technique. Today I took my deep test and had to tread water for 30secs and swim across the pool and back and I passed
You have two skills which i wish to have with me right now....that is Swimming and playing guitar.....i want to learn this both in current situation... :)
My problem is I have limited neck movement and cannot take a breath. I cannot put my head out of the water when swimming (I see some people do it when doing the breaststroke) due to not having much neck movement. I have discs missing in my upper spine so I have a few bones in my spine fussed together. I cannot turn my head to take a breath either as cannot turn my head. Any idea how I could take a breath when swimming. Growing up my swim instructor was no help with this.
never turn your head, always turn your ENTIRE body when side breathing, breast stroke breathing is a lot easier vs front crawl becuz your whole upper body rises up to the surface, give it a try :)
