UTC could be the United Traction Company which was initially a horse drawn carriage company.

The little UTC button at 4:50 might be a United traction company

Hi Brad great video. I looked up the button UTC. Its a United Traction Company button. Horse-drawn trolley service began in Albany in 1864.
@kdelander4903

There's a UTC button on e-bay for sale right now, which looks just like the one you found, in terms of the lettering. The item description says, "According to Don VanCourt's second volume of Transportation Uniform Buttons (Transit), this is entry 66/9 for the United Traction Company in Albany, NY. It began operations 1 Jan 1900 and was abandoned by 1946." So, then, you are right - probably an early 1900's button.

Brad, as usual, absolute beautiful photography and b-roll footage, just love it! Obviously, the 1825 US Largee in the great condition it was in was the find of the hunt, but....that clock frame was amazing. We find a LOT of the single square pieces here in Florida, maybe with a gear or two still rusted to it, but NEVER the entire frame with the windings and some gears, PLUS the winding key. That was awesome!!! Hope the weather holds for you that you can continue to get some more hunts in. ATB Rob / FlThunder

My grandmother told me that she wore large hats to protect from the sun. A tan was a no no?? I assume that if u were fair it was a beauty thing but also meant u were a lady who did not have to work in your field. So parasols were at the ready.
@leighmitcler3320
@leighmitcler3320 3 года назад
My grandma told me the same. She was raised on a potato farm and all the girls (11) of them worked the fields in big hats, long sleeves and gloves. On Sat, they bathed in milk water to lighten their skin (not sure if this work) but it was a weekly ritual. Being tanned meant you were dirt poor and a 2nd class citizen.
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 3 года назад
I've always suspected most of these were from umbrellas. Every household could use one or more of those, and they were a lot more likely to get broken than a parasol.
@reginaromsey
@reginaromsey 3 года назад
Wearing a big woven hat outside can keep you cooler! Try putting one on over a wet cloth for “swamp cooling” as well as wiping the sweat off your face. Wearing hats while working outside in the heat and wind makes sense. Hoeing crops, or even flower gardens is long, hard work. Drinking water wasn’t always easily available, the sun beating down on an unprotected head was an invitation to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Sun tan lotion, and sun screen that didn’t just sweat off into your eyes didn’t exist. Oils and cleaners for the face were just becoming available to Buy in the 1920’s. Sun without all the creams and lotions we use now are a way to becoming wrinkled early in life. Bright light constantly in your eyes isn’t good for them either. White skin has been valued by middle and upper classes for centuries. I stay out of the sun because I don’t tan evenly and I burn very well. Plus I hate being hot and sweaty and a big hat helps.

BRAD I found out what your button is it's a BB Evansville & Terre Haute railroad button. I looked it up took half the day but I found it. 1800s button about 1850s or so .
@MarkASmith48
@MarkASmith48 3 года назад
I think that is misidentified in the google photo. It seems one site (Picclick) has grouped (or google did) lots of buttons together including one for the BB Evansville & Terre Haute Railroad and your search (as mine) identifies all the buttons as from the railroad. Never-the-less a search for the above railroad does show a UTC button which unfortunately is not identified as to its source. There is an identical UTC button on ebay identified as coming from the Waterbury Button Company. www.ebay.com/itm/UTC-Button-Waterbury-Button-Co-Conn/254515003680?hash=item3b4246c120:g:NlYAAOSwoQdeShJl The lister remarks that it might be a Civil War button, but he/she is unsure. WBCo is still in business.
@MarkASmith48
@MarkASmith48 3 года назад
At the Waterbury Button Company the UTC button is identified as for the Union Terminal Company. waterburybutton.com/product/utc-union-terminal-co-2-04-2/ That company began in 1912 in Dallas, TX. How a button came to Vermont is an interesting question. A worker at the UTC in November, 1963 witnessed the JFK assassination according to Wikipedia.

Very good hunt for the hike up!! The Largie made the trip a big success (1825) ☺ That's the most of one clock innards that I've seen anyone pull from the dirt so far👍 My favorite find though is the bell, my top of my bucket list is Conestoga and Crotal bells at the moment! This hunt had to have been in November because that's when you guys had your heat wave after the early snowfall 😃 As always; wonderful video Brad!!

Jingle bell? No info on the Arrow? I assumed when you said trespasser you meant poacher! I would think your tag how to change in molecular structure alinity which caused the patina to exaggerate on said stamping! LOL

What happens when an amalgam metal, an alloy like brass or bronze, is struck is that the different elements in it are forced into a position where their alignment is rearranged into an unusual placement. It makes the metal harder, but also more brittle, and it oxidizes differently than unstruck sections. They used to hammer bronze swords like that because it helped them keep an edge and some degree of rigidity. It's called "work hardening." Not that you'll read this. I'm noticing this video is a year old.

Regarding the find you thought might be a suspender clip., Because of it's size it could be, maybe a child's suspenders but it looks more like garter clip for stockings, although in England garter belts are called suspenders and what are called suspenders in the US are called braces in England.

The long small flat rod that you couldn't identify is actually a hem marker. When making a dress, and hemming the skirt part, you would put it up against the skirt, a bar slid up to where you wanted the hem. Then you went around the skirt bottom pinning or marking it at that bar so your dress hem would be the same length all around.

Little bent and broken square looks like a lapel or collar appointment. It's unlikely that's what it is because they're not often used, nor were they typically used in the 1800s, but if that's what it is, it would have been meant to add flare to the lapels or collars of shirts and jackets or sometimes to cover a threadbare portion of a collar.

The brass tag would work harden in the area where it was struck. Which could explain why it ages differently.

@hoperp1951

As for the brass tag, when metal is worked in any way, hammered, forged, stamped or embossed etc, then a degree of work hardening will take place, this alters the metallurgical structure and as such that area will have slightly different properties. Hence the ability to detect gun or engine numbers although they have been ground or filed smooth. The metal structure is altered and using the right process can be revealed.

From Evidence Technology Magazine: "When a number is stamped into a metal object, the metal underneath the number is compressed and hardened. Even when the number is ground off, this hardened area may still be present. By applying an acid solution, the metal can be slowly eaten away and the number may reappear. This is commonly referred to as “raising the serial number”. Therefore, in the case of your brass tag, one would suspect that groundwater (in combination with the specific chemical combination of certain soils) becomes acidic, producing the result that you showed. I imagine it is similar in effect to when you apply a "rust reformer" to rusted iron or steel - tannic acid, reacts with iron oxide (rust) and chemically converts it to iron tannate, a dark-colored stable material. Now emerging from the rabbit hole! Thanks Brad!
