So much work going on there as the new housing units being built and they will be costly. Was a Naval Station with Marines working the main gate as well as the Brig. Stationed there 50 years ago as a Marine. Much nicer back than with much more activity going on. Thanks for the video.

I was stationed on treasure island mid 1980's. It was completely different back then, although already many buildings had already been destroyed from the military height. Waking up every morning with the gorgeous views, working and living so close to SF was priceless. Hopefully the island can be put to good use in the future.

Jermaine , I lived on Treasure Island for about a year when I was in the Navy. There was never any nuclear waste and about two thirds of the base was for family housing. There was a fire fighting school there also and a brig ( Navy jail ).

The last time I was here was March 1969, waiting for a flight to Vietnam at a transient barracks for 13 days. My last command was Naval Hospital San Diego. I was an HM3. Nothing in this video looks anything like my memories of Treasure Island CA

Was in navy 73-77 went to fire fighter school on T.I in 73, got out of navy there in 77 every one on the west coast went to T.I to process out, even guys getting kicked out,and there were hundreds getting kicked out went I was there for three days, San Francisco let section 8 people live in the housing and in no time crimes all over the island, fires, gun shots at night, robbing people,a few getting shot, but now they are building hundreds of houses to sell at about $1,500,000 dollars, new roads the works! Thanks!

I would think twice about hanging out at Treasure Island with the history of the toxins that the Navy put into the ground there. Being landfill it is also more vulnerable in an earthquake. If you Really want to see a forgotten neighborhood check out Yerba Buena Island. More officer housing over there and the views are incredible! My niece lived in the old barracks at TI with the Job Corps and I used to visit her often. And knew somebody who lived on YB too and it was a big difference on that side. A big problem is there are not many ammenites there, such as a store to shop at.

MORE HISTORY! This is not an abandoned SF neighborhood. It is a former military navy base built at the onset of WW2. Buildings were temporary and the modern navy buildings were distroyed when the base was closed. The worlds fair had hundreds of temporary exhibits that were destroyed as the Navy built up the base. THERE IS ABUNDANCE OF MATERIAL ONLINE COVERING THE WORLDS FAIR AND SUBSEQUENT NAVY USE. ALL OVER RU-vid. The most modern navy facilities until recently were used by Job Corps to train young prople 16-24. There are still beautiful Officers Mansions, and a Coast Guard station on Yerba Buena.

What a romantic name for such a creepy total waste of land! It has a WW2 barracks or confinement camp feel - like an abandoned military base. Imagine all the tiny homes the City could build there for the homeless. And the rent in THIS forgotten area I'll bet is nothing like what people have to scramble to make downtown. Best thing about this whole scene? Those 3 goofy dogs. This is America. Thanks for showing us, Jermaine. We love you

Great walking tour of TI Jermaine, you’re correct, those old beat up buildings were used by the military, even most of the residences were former military housing. I would have liked to hear a bit of the history of the island. It sure has interesting beginnings if you aren’t aware.

My father was in the navy during WW2. He talked about for awhile he was stationed on the island. About 20 years ago I was working for the City and County of San Francisco. My unit was in charge of doing a physical ability test for candidates who were seeking employment. A couple of times we administered the test on Treasure Island. There was an old skating rink we were able to use. Building was in bad shape. We used it two different times but when we tried to use it again we were told we couldn’t as we were told building was in too bad of shape. I thought after all these years the island would look really different but it looked pretty much to me. It is interesting as there are actually two islands there. One is Yerba Buena. It is a natural island and is hilly and way above the water level. The Bay Bridge has a tunnel that goes under part of it. Treasure Island is really flat, was created by filling in part of the Bay.
