When you see a shovel in one of my videos, chances are high that I returned to a location for treasure! I metal detected this place in the past, but couldn’t penetrate the surface with my digger, once I found a deep signal. I marked this place and came back.
Highly compressed soil indicated that the object could be older. I took my time and approached it very carefully, because you never know if the object didn’t fell from the sky during WWII, or if it’s something old and historically valuable.
After spending almost half an hour digging around the edge of “something”, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I finally grabbed the object… It was round and made of iron. The shape must have “fooled” my metal detector, which resulted in a better signal. I have no idea what it was, but it sure wasn’t a vase with gold coins! What a disappointment.
I then had to carry this clunky shovel around during a normal relic hunt. I was able to find small stuff like 18th century buttons, but also two coins. The small rivet could be Roman, but of course I’m not sure about it.
The highlight of this hunt came at the moment, shortly before my camera went out of power. It was a silver plated brooch with some enameled design elements. It has the writing: “HEIDENLÖCHER DEIDESHEIM”, which relates to a historical place in the Palatinate Forest 50 Km away from this find. “Heidenlöcher” (plural) stands for “heathen holes” and describes in this case dents in the ground left by former 9th century buildings of a refuge castle (a place build to protect people living in this area from Normans).
I assume, the brooch relates to this (archaeological) place as some sort of modern souvenir. Because people supposedly came up with the “heathen holes” name during 19th century, the brooch can’t be older than that.
I hope you enjoyed this adventure. I recorded it 2018 but edited it now, because I’m still unable to go out detecting (which hopefully changes soon).
Thanks for watching & take care!
