I got this game when it first came out in 1975. Mine fell apart as I played it so much that I picked up a copy three years ago which is virtually meant. I love this game it’s one of my favourites

If you can find it at a fair price Matt, I'd say it's worth adding to the collection but yeah, it's gonna be one of those once in a blue moon listings where it's at a fair price. It's a good looking game for sure, and the spinner...I kinda like how it pranks the players. A little bit of Curse of The Idol there... but nothing quite so annoying. If you fail on a scroll and everything gets mixed up, there's the other players playing too so...someone will find the mask in most games

I got this for Christmas back then & it was brilliant. I lost it (how?) but bought it off a classmate about 10 years later. Really happy,then his mum and dad turned up & demanded it back. A curse on them.

I'd say this being a super vintage board game, back in an era which had it's own charm and given this game's own theme, it wouldn't surprise me if you had to pay a little premium to find one in decent condition. That being said, I'm a huge fan of luck based board games ngl. It's like you can have a player be the front runner through-out the game only for them to land up with a death scroll (maybe even all 3 times) giving someone else a chance to win the game. Makes for a fun game evening for sure! Excellent review as always, a beautiful board game to add to the collection. I def. agree that the actual playing pieces should have been a little more fitting for the design language the game was going for. Overall a must have in your collection if you ask me! Earned yourself a sub!

I was searching for egypt themed games just yesterday! I like the challenge parts, they fit well into the setting. A modern remake of this one would be awesome, replacing the randomness with more player choice/skill.

Ghost Castle in ancient Egypt! Luke, thanks for digging up this artifact and giving us a lively look. 𓀌𓊎𓋹𓁹 Iʼve heard of this one before and drooled at the painstakingly gorgeous art but found it too decisionless to justify acquisition (even were I to find it for just a few dozen quid or equivalent-kudos!). Still, it is attractive…as thereʼs a good chance I may never get to encounter it in person, your detailed walkthrough is an entertaining consolation. The closeups remind me of touring the traveling Tutankhamun exhibition when I was in Paris in 2019-the game is the cardboard and plastic home version!!
@downfromtheattic
@downfromtheattic 3 года назад
You're not the only one who's drawn the parallel to Ghost Castle with this game. It's definitely overpriced for certain, but worth getting if you're able to get a decent price on it. Gameplay is very old school with squares on the board dictating your moves and it's all down to luck who'll win but it's still a fun game. I think the reason why the game is as pricey as it is is down to Palitoy falling on hard times during the 70s and 80s and possibly not making as many copies, I can't think of any other reason
@Erik.Miller

@@downfromtheattic It might not be just this gameʼs scarcity helping drive up price but also the relative scarcity of the theme. The allure of ancient‐Egypt adventure has been been captured in various other vintage games, but few are so thoroughly drenched in it-and some that are, such as Treasures & Trapdoors and Voice of the Mummy, can be costly too. I think thereʼs a lot of hunger for this sort of theme that current manufacturers could be capitalizing on more. Khetʼs more tangential Egypt theming made the laser‐chess premise, exciting though it was on its own, still all the more attractive (itʼs the ancient past _and_ the future, together NOW!!!)-but, good as that game is on its own merits, the pasted‐on theme doesnʼt sate the pyramids‐and‐sarcophagi appetite the way Treasures of the Pharaohs does. Presenting that theme with immersive verisimilitude (like Treasure of the Pharaohsʼ) amid engaging gameplay (like Khetʼs) could make for a wonder of the gaming world.

It's one I struggled to get a good copy of for a long time, it's not easy to find. But like I said in the review, I wouldn't spend too much on this game, it's rare but gameplay wise, I think if you spent a lot on it you'd be disappointed.

@@downfromtheattic Adventure and horror games are my and my nephew favorite, so definitely I would like play in this. However it is pure madness, what is going on with some games prices. 40£ it is really good price, I wpuld say even cheap, but is not possible to find anything. Like I wrote, I strongly belive that this game should be released again. Omega Virus too. I think board game manufacturers are blind.

@@downfromtheattic I've got the main three, graveyard, horrorland, and terror tower - I've seen spiders and shrieks at thrift stores and passed... had enough of pogs as a kid, anyway definitely graveyard is the best of the three with neat sliding floor mechanism using box bottom, terror tower good but really short knocking dice into opponents is fun, and I thought I would like horrorland a lot more than I did, fun to look at and gimmicky but lacking gameplay and low replay value. All cardboard rides don't fit back into box that well and tend to show from it. Just my 2 cents.

it reminded me of the UK death star playset, so i had to laugh when i saw it was made by palitoy. if you think 150L is expensive for that, try pricing the 'star wars' toy. ouch!
@theythinkitsallrover8106

You say it's not worth £150+ but it's all down to what somebody is willing to pay. Nostalgia can carry a hefty price tag for some.
@downfromtheattic
@downfromtheattic 3 года назад
You're right, nostalgia can definitely factor in on what someone's willing to pay for a game or anything really. What I meant was compared to games of a similar price, I don't feel like this games is worth that cost. If you can find it cheaper, yeah go for it

Hi Luke, great review. I recently lost out on a bid on eBay for this. It started off at a reasonable price but then grew to a silly price that I couldn't justify. Having now watched your review I think I had a lucky escape. I would still like it because it does look great but as you say doesn't seem like it's worth the high price tag often see it for and will hold out for a lucky find.
@downfromtheattic
@downfromtheattic 3 года назад
I think it's knowing what a game is worth to you. I've told myself enough times that I'm not going to pay a certain price for a game because despite that being the going price, I think it's overpriced. Sometimes it's a matter of just being patient. I've seen copies of this on facebook marketplace for around £50-60, people doing attic clearances etc. They do show up cheaper from time to time but there's definitely those sellers who know what they have and charge over the odds
