Hi Angela, there is not a great deal that we can do for this bird over the internet, he does need to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible if he has diarrhoea and blood in his stool. Follow the instructions on the video and perhaps try a broad spectrum antibiotic in it's water until it can be seen by a vet, something like Triple C will be fine.

@vetafarm
@vetafarm 9 лет назад
+Tweety Hunter, I would suggest taking your budgie to an Avian veterinarian to have a full examination and diagnosis made, unfortunately there are many reasons why a bird may be "puffed up" or have diarrhea.

Doctor, I have a 7 year old Cockateil and he has been passing watery stools since last Thursday. The feacus seems like bits and scattered and the urea is webby and white. Sometimes it’s just water and nothing else. I tried an antibiotic ofloxacin and metranidazole for 2 days. It seemed like getting better but back to being watery again. Will the triple c and symbiotic help? If yes, how and when should these be given? Kindly advice

I am not sure about any of the Harrison diets, I am not familiar with the diet that you speak of. I would recommend getting in contact with Harrisons and asking them. You don't want your bird to be overweight though, if she is overweight I would cut back on the amount of food provided until she is a good weight, or switch to a maintenance formula that is lower in fat.

@vetafarm
@vetafarm 4 года назад
Hi, thank you for watching and commenting on our video. These symptoms could be caused by quite a variety of different illnesses and therefore we would recommend travelling her to a veterinarian for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, we would recommend following the instructions on this video to help her fight the illness. Poly-Aid Plus is not a treatment, but is a great product for sick birds as it contains sustained-release carbohydrates, proteins, probiotics and electrolytes. These help to give the bird some energy. We do have an over the counter broad spectrum antibiotic called Triple C, that is for the treatment of bacterial infections including E. Coli (Enteritis), Mycoplasma (Chronic Respiratory Disease) and Chlamydia (Psittacosis). If you feel that your budgerigar may have a respiratory infection, it might be worth giving her a course of this antibiotic. Please ensure that you follow up the antibiotic treatment with Synbiotic or Probotic to re-establish the gastrointestinal flora in the bird. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at sales@vetafarm.com.au or on (02)69330400.

Hello, if you can put your birds on to a pellet diet that will be better for their health. You can put the pellets in their food bowl with the seed and transition them to pellets. Some birds take longer to take to pellets than others and you don't want to starve your birds. Why are they on Baytril?

@vetafarm
@vetafarm 8 лет назад
Dear Irteaza, it is difficult to know what antibiotics or treatment is required for your bird without doing a consultation and determining the extent of the injury to the bird. We would recommend you see your avian vet and have them examine the bird and it’s injury. Most importantly, ensure you keep the bird warm and hospitalised until it can be seen by a vet and you may also want to administer some Poly Aid Plus as a first aid supplement.

Hi Gabrielle, did you mean your male Gouldian Finch? If so, it is common for male Gouldian finches to experience hormonal imbalances that results in symptoms like these. We would recommend having him checked by a veterinarian. If you cannot do that, the first thing we would recommend doing, is to rest him far away from any females.

@vetafarm
@vetafarm 5 лет назад
Hi Thishitha, thank you for commenting on our video! Unfortunately those symptoms can be a variety of illnesses and without a veterinary diagnosis it is very difficult to give you a treatment that we know would work! The Triple C will assist with Enteritis, Chronic Respiratory Disease and Chlamydia (Psittacosis). It is a broad spectrum antibiotic however it may or may not treat your birds illness depending on what is causing the illness. You would need a diagnosis for us to accurately give you the name of a treatment that would work. :)

I found a grown bird outside. It had it’s head burried in its wing and I doubt it was able to fly. I took it home cause it’s going to get eaten by animals outside. There’s some brown liquid discharge from it and its feathers are puffy. It rarely moves its head. It tried flapping its wings but I don’t think it can fly since I almost stepped on it outside too. I followed the instructions of the hospital cage but what should I do now?
@vetafarm
@vetafarm 6 лет назад
Hi, thank you for commenting. It sounds like the bird you found might be quite sick. We would recommend getting the bird to a veterinarian or a wildlife carer for treatment. In the meantime you could give the bird a supplement such as Poly-Aid Plus to administer concentrated nutrients in one direct dose.

*IMPORTANT WARNING FOR PET BIRD OWNERS:* The food that we normally give to the canaries (and other companion birds) consisting of a "complete, balanced and top-quality seeds mixture" bought in pet stores or malls, makes the owners trust that their pet is well fed, but it's not so: indeed the birds health is at serious risk. The owners of canaries, parrots, cockatoos, budgies, cockatiels, etc., WE MUST PAY ATTENTION TO DOMESTIC BIRD BREEDERS AND VETS and keep in mind that although we feed them with such a typical seeds mixture, our birds are very likely in danger of suffering an unexpected, painful and practically inevitable PREMATURE DEATH BY FATTY LIVER DISEASE. Canaries, for example, will surely die at 4 - 7 years of age of the more than 16 - 20 that they can live. It's sad that pet birds are fated to die early and painfully in so many cases. You have to warn people to avoid it! This deadly disease is very common in pet birds but owners usually don’t know or detect it in time. And we can’t imagine that *THE CAUSE IS IN THE FOOD ITSELF* that we provide to our birds, in which such *a typical mixture contains low-fat seeds such as canary seed together with other VERY fatty seeds such as niger, hemp or nabine and, in addition, the birds usually prefer to eat the fatty seeds* so that their REAL DIET is unbalanced by excessive fat, gradually causes the fatty infiltration of the liver and in a few years causes fatty liver hepatitis and PREMATURE DEATH to pet birds. *Also the fruits and specially the breeding paste and its pigments and THE SUNFLOWER SEEDS ATTACK THE LIVER* if they are taken too much or for too long. It's a cruel disease that progresses silently and, when its unexpected symptoms begin, they are easily confused with other ailments so the owners usually postpone the visit to the vet at a time already critical for the life of the bird (besides that not all vets are trained to recognize this elusive and misleading disease, even to administer lipotropic and regenerative liver protectors in curative doses, just in case it's that and not a supposed blow). It's a process of slow and asymptomatic progression, but when their visible symptoms begin (acute phase) the disease accelerates. *SYMPTOMS OF THE ACUTE PHASE OF FATTY LIVER DISEASE:* First, overgrowth of beak and nails, progressive sadness and/or pecking, hard belly (in many cases, with a dark spot with a half-moon shape on the belly, which seems a "tumor", to see it you have to wet your fingers to remove the down), falls from the sticks of the cage that seem for "errors of calculation" and then lameness (that make believe that they are by the previous falls, but both symptoms are due to that it hurts the liver), lack of flight and singing, the bird fluffs up his feathers or bends more or less slowly; Then, within a few weeks or a few days, heavy breathing with open beak, remaining lying on the floor of the cage near the food, sudden spasms from time to time (which make people believe that the bird is "epileptic" but it are twinges of pain of diseased liver), abundant greenish poop (caused by biliverdin which if it's not fasting, it means hepatic harm), then black and watery (from hepatic hemorrhages), then a strange purplish color of skin and beak, an excessive appetite and the final "improvement" of a few days (in the last phase, the already degenerated liver becomes deflated by what the bird seems to ameliorate), after which it suddenly dies among seizures (which may seem a "heart infarct" or a "stroke"). For the first symptoms the liver has already degenerated to 80% and only an urgent (and accurate) vet action can save your bird and revert the liver situation. If you simply feed your bird with the loose seeds mixture (even if you give it fresh fruits, vegetables and let it exercise, for example by letting it out of the cage at home), right now your pet's liver is degenerating, and neither you nor your bird know. *Without liver protectors, it's almost certain that your bird will die early and in many cases you won’t be able to determine its real cause.* Hepatic lipidosis it's not only deadly by itself when the visible symptoms begin (sometimes even it does not warn at all until few moments before the death). Even before the acute phase it predisposes the bird to suffer infections, as it weakens the immune system. Obese pet birds have an higher risk of many other diseases, like arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Obesity in birds it's not so apparent but it's more dangerous than in other animals like mammals. So in addition to giving to the birds lipotropic and detox / regenerating hepatic protectors preventively and routinely, breeders usually make their own mixtures with low fat seeds. *PREVENTION AND/OR TREATMENT:* The time to act is NOW that your bird doesn’t show yet the visible symptoms. It's necessary to ACTIVELY PREVENT THE LIVER DEGENERATION. Fortunately it's easy to do it: *It's very advisable to substitute progressively (within some weeks, as per the instructions of the manufacturer) the mixture of loose seeds for some pellets compound food of seeds, fruits and vegetables (preferably those that already include liver protectors), because this prevents the bird from filtering and eating mostly the fatty seeds (but without insisting if the bird does not get accustomed to eating pellets because he could die for starvation within a few days).* *And, whatever the diet, it's CRUCIAL to add to the drinking water or to the food LIPOTROPIC LIVER PROTECTORS that include carnitine and / or choline, betaine, methionine, etc., (and it's very convenient to add DETOX / REGENERATING LIVER PROTECTORS with thistle milk, boldo, artichoke extract).* Liver protectors are not medicine but cheap food supplements manufactured by pet bird vet laboratories that remove the fat from the liver, clean it and favor its recovery. It's essential to add them to the pet birds diet to conserve their liver. It's something that breeders and vets know, but we the owners usually don't know. It are appearing in the market compound feed for pet birds that don’t include fatty seeds and that already include several liver protectors. *But the vast majority of owners still confidently feed their birds with the typical mixture of loose seeds with little fat and other very fatty seeds... And their birds continue dying for hepatic lipidosis in a large number of cases (likely, in most cases).* Now we know that, as fatty liver disease develops from the daily food itself, it’s most likely *THE FIRST CAUSE OF DEATH OF PET BIRDS, and more so as the bird ages.* Webs on FLD: www.beautyofbirds.com/liverdisease.html Liver disease is a slow, on-going progressive disease where the liver tissue is replaced with fat. When the liver disease has progressed, the bird may suddenly appear ill. www.lovinghands.com/forms/Hepatic%20Lipidosis%20-%20Fatty%20Liver%20Disease.pdf One of the sadder diseases many avian vets see is that of hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver disease. It's sad in a number of ways since often the birds are very ill, life-threateningly so, or possibly having died suddenly. Often the owners have been unaware of the dangers of feeding their beloved pet the seeds, peanuts, or other fatty foods the bird obviously loves to eat. These are truly cases of "loving your bird to death". Any bird can fall victim to fatty liver disease. www.researchgate.net/publication/46105643_Treating_liver_disease_in_the_avian_patient Dietary deficiencies of lipotrophic factors such as choline, biotin, and methionine may decrease the transport of lipids from the liver. The clinical manifestations of hepatic diseases in ornamental birds are much more frequent than people could realize and in many cases they are not appreciated, progress in a silent way and when they are evident, vet action may arrive late. Most any avian symptomatology should be considered as if it was a pathology that could be serious, and not allow the disease to develop because then it will probably be too late. We must closely investigate the symptoms, take preventive measures that don’t harm (such as giving liver and intestinal protectors according to the leaflet) ask for advice from vets, breeders, etc. and procure the most appropriate treatment RAPIDLY, but without rushing in the treatment or with the doses in such small animals. If the days go by and the bird doesn’t improve, it's necessary to continue investigating and, if necessary, change the medication in an informed and contrasted manner. Doing nothing or stopping research usually ends up with the bird dead, but acting without being sure of what is done and in what dose, it likely ends the same way. It's necessary to obtain and confirm the sufficient vet experience and have the serenity to determine in each case whether it's convenient to hasten to do and / or administer what medicine and in what dose, or if it’s better not to do and let the situation evolve without medicating for the time being, or according to the medication that has already been administered. A limp in a bird is not always an injury caused by a blow, but the symptom of a disease of some organ (usually the liver or an intestinal disease) that needs to be discovered and treated ASAP. When in doubt, change diet to one with the lowest fat possible (only birdseed, or with other low-fat seeds such as millet, chia and vegetables) and administer lipotropic and regenerating liver protectors in curative doses immediately... although nothing could foresee a fatal outcome. There are also food supplements protectors of the intestinal mucosa and stimulants of the immune system. In doses according to the leaflets do not cause damage, it will surely save the life of your bird (if it's not too late), and will keep them with a basic wellness.

I did a huge mistake, I got another conure a week ago when i come after work my both conures are always with me but today one of them was on my shoulder i didn't felt that the another one is missing and she was staying over the door i didn't saw her and i pushed the door she started to fly around and after that she stopped in panic I went to the vet immediately but they said that they are not specialists and they don't know how to treat exotic birds I don't know where else to go, she is not looking good for me she is fluffied and closing her eyes and sitting alone , I know that this is not a good sign . She still can fly i saw her today drinking water and she eat little bit fruits after the accident but usually she is eating a lot and I'm worried that she is in shock and can't get over it What I should do to help her? I'm feeling really bad i never though i will do something like that and I don't wanna she to feel any pain because I have no idea how she feels.

@vetafarm
@vetafarm 8 лет назад
Hello, the bird doesn't need to see while he is inside the box, we are covering him so he can rest and not be stressed by things on the outside. The hospital box is used when you can't take your bird to the vet straight away, so you can keep him in the box until you can take him to a veterinarian. If he is unwell you can use Vetafarm's Poly-Aid Plus until you can take him to a vet, this will provide him with electrolytes to keep him hydrated, carbohydrates and proteins to give him energy to survive.

sadly there are not enough avian vets in regional Australia, our nearest one is a 5 hour drive away, and the vet we have in our town have very limited knowledge of birds, he actually said we know more than what they do, they are good for physical injury such as splayed legs, or broken wing but actual illness, common response is if they bird is showing illness then it is on its way out. sad but true.

Same problems in Italy, birds keeping and showing is very popular but it's very-very hard to find a Vet that specializes in birds...most of the times us breeders we seek help and advice on forums and online groups but you need to be very careful because some people think they can make a diagnosis and prescribe a cure over a picture or a video they've seen. Antibiotics and medicines abuse in doing a lot of damage in the long run...birds are becoming weak and hard to breed.

There are many potential causes for this to happen. Avian Gastric Yeast is a possibility, without having any diagnostic testing done it will be difficult to determine the cause of the undigested food. I would advise to take one of the sick birds to a veterinarian and ask for a fecal smear and crop swab to be done, and have a laboratory examine the samples for a definitive diagnosis.

@vetafarm
@vetafarm 5 лет назад
Hi, thank you for watching our video! We are sorry to hear of your situation. Unfortunately jerky movements and milky/unformed droppings can be symptoms for a number of different illnesses making it hard to pinpoint. An increase in urates can be a symptom of dehydration. The lack of feces in the stool can be a sign that he/she isn't eating or that there is an issue in the bowel/digestive tract. We would recommend getting the bird to a veterinarian.

Give the enrofloxacin (baytril) alone, do not give with tetracycline at the same time. For lice and mites you can use Vetafarm Avian Insect Liquidator (A.I.L) but if she is sneezing it could be a respiratory infection, enrofloxacin (baytril) is very good for respiratory conditions. How much enrofloxacin (baytril) do you have? Do you have enough to give treatment for 14 days?

You should give the probiotic for 10 days after the antibiotic course. If your other cockatiels are "flat" looking I would recommend treating them with the antibiotics also. If they normally whistle and are not then they may be starting to get sick.

My budgie is vomiting all seeds that he has eaten. Kindly suggest some medicines or treatment please as we have no nice vet in our area
@vetafarm
@vetafarm 6 лет назад
Hi Pia, there can be several reasons that a budgie may regurgitate/vomit its seed back up. So in order to clarify its behaviour I need to ask a few questions. Is your budgie a male or female, and how old is it? Is this bird a pet that you handle or any aviary bird? Is it throwing up its seed onto something in particular or in the same spot, for example on you, or onto a toy? Has your budgie lost weight/condition at all? What are its droppings like? It is common for a male budgie to regurgitate what it has been eating onto a favorite person/toy as this is mating behaviour. This would be the most likely explanation if your budgie is a male. However they can also regurgitate/throw up when they are battling illnesses such as Canker, or Megabacteria infections.
@piasharma759
@piasharma759 6 лет назад
Vetafarm hello sir, My budgie is a female. I have brought her just 3 month back from a vet shop. She is now 1 year old. She has not lose weight but she has become inactive. She just rest on her ladder. Her motion is a dark green with white spot. Yesterday she has throwed out all d seeds that we're not digested by her. Can I go her a apple cider vinegar dissolved in water?
@vetafarm
@vetafarm 6 лет назад
Hi Pia, a female budgerigar with the symptoms that you have listed is most likely a Trichomoas infection, also known as Canker. Treatment for this is a veterinary prescribed medication, and diagnosis of this requires a crop smear, and a wet prep that must be done by a certified veterinarian. I would recommend taking your budgerigar to a Veterinarian.

I have a parakeet that I had previously brought to a local veterinarian who had prescribed baytril for it symptoms or tail-bobbing, clear nasal discharge out of one nostril and slight wheezing. Dan Hibiki was on it for 10 day's it seemed to have minimize his symptoms if at all. He has had a reocorunce of the clear nasal discharge and seems to rubbing his beak and head in the same area and still has the tail-bobbing and very slight wheezing that becomes more pronounced when he is excited or has done something very strenuous. Is there something else I can try or get prescribed for him or do in the meantime? The vet said it could be anything from a vitamin-a deficiency to a seed being stuck in his nose/airways. I could not afford the more advanced lab test to determine what the true bacterium was and opted for the simple poop smear test at the time of his week almost two weeks ago. He still eat's, and get's groomed and grooms my cocktail Junior, and act's like his normal self. I just don't want him to be in any pain or suffering from his particular aliments.
@vetafarm
@vetafarm 7 лет назад
Hi Nicholas, your vet sounds like they are fairly on the ball about birds which is good, I would advise not giving any more antibiotics until you know what bacterium you are dealing with, as you will start to build antibiotic resistance, and we definitely do not want that. Perhaps continue with the process you are doing now, as long as he is eating and drinking well and behaving normally I would not stress too much. If you can work on saving a little bit of money for a culture and sensitivity swab on the nasal fluid that would be much more beneficial.

Hi, I have a rescued sparrow that has calcium deficiencies, and now for 2 days she has been limping on one foot. the other is red and very slightly swollen. I have began a proper diet for her now that was recomended on starlingtalk.com in a discussion I was told that she has sprained her foot because of her weakness. I was wondering how long will it take her to get better, also I should mention that there aren't any avain vets where I am from so, I am counting advice from experts. I have vidoes of her on my channel after she had a seizure, caused by the deficiencie. but now it's been 2 days and she hasn't had another, but is still weak and doesn't chirp. and sometimes eats and other times doesnt, so I force feed her so she has energy and nutrients. you can read more here: www.starlingtalk.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=21022

Hi Sangeen, thank you for your contact. Poly Aid Plus is a very good first aid supplement that provides energy, electrolytes and Probiotics for sick and injured birds. This supplement has saved many birds lives and is very effective for rescue animals. For calcium, we recommend Calcivet, which can be added to drinking water and also administered directly to the bird orally. You may want to also consider a course of broad spectrum antibiotics such as Triple C. Most importantly, ensure you keep the bird warm and hospitalised to assist recovery.

Hi there. thanks for the video. it was informative. 1- could you please tell what antibiotic can we keep at home just in case we need to start giving it to the bird if need be. there are hardlyy any good vets that deal with birds on regular basis and the vet that we have found in our city, it takes time to take the bird there at times appointment takes time and so forth... so what should be given to prevent the infection, if any, from aggravating?? 2- please tell what to give to parrots/baby parrots that start sneezing?
@vetafarm
@vetafarm 5 лет назад
Hi Tannia, thank you for watching our video! We manufacture several types of antibiotics but they all have different active ingredients to treat different illnesses so the effectiveness will depend on what is causing the illness. The only antibiotic that we manufacture that is available at most pet stores without having to see a veterinarian is called Triple C. It is effective against E Coli (Enteritis), Mycoplasma (Chronic Respiratory Disease) and Chlamydia (Psittacosis). Another really good product to have in your avian first aid kit is Poly Aid Plus. It contains sustained-release carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, probiotics and electrolytes. It works by giving the bird enough energy to fight the illness off themselves. We also produce a product called Coccivet for treatment of Coccidiosis which can be purchased at most pet stores. The rest of our antibiotic treatments must be purchased through a veterinarian. We would still recommend getting any bird showing signs of illness to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Parrots/baby parrots that begin sneezing could be due to a number of reasons and we would recommend giving them Poly-Aid Plus and taking them to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
