Overdose Prevention Education for Clinicians Treating Patients for an Opioid Use Disorder
Given the doubling of opioid related overdose deaths in the US over the past decade the importance of a dynamic, patient centered approach to opioid overdose risk for patients in treatment for opioid use disorder cannot be stressed enough. This brief NIDA video provides strategies for overdose prevention through identification of an individual’s risk factors, stressing the importance of treatment adherence, safety planning and overdose rescue preparation.

An overdose kit should be part of any prescription for opioids such as OxyContin with pre-loaded naloxone in the kit. Localized pain such as postop surgery on extremities could be treated by injecting MITOMYCIN 0.01% normal saline solution could be injected by the surgeon at the time surgery in the operated area to minimize pain and limiting pain prescription medicine to codeine such as Tylenol with codeine 1/2 grain tablet every 4 to 8 hours only if needed.
