In this episode, I’ll demonstrate FOUR ways with which the modern day tree climber can create both primary and secondary TIPs (tie in points) between themselves and the tree. After all, what would tree climbing be without lanyards? I’ll tell you exactly what it would be: DANGEROUS.
Lanyards offer us the security of existing as a mobile and reusable means of creating protection for a climber. Knowing how to use this relatively inexpensive, life saving tool will not only help with creating better, more comfortable work positioning, but it ensures that a climber is - as often as possible - connected to the tree by two points of contact (primary climbing line and lanyard combination).
Knowing how to connect yourself with your lanyard is critical and the faster it can be done (without reducing safety), the more efficient you will become at climbing throughout all parts of a variety of different trees. There are very few circumstances where I would ascend into a tree without my trusty lanyard.

Like always, you put out a video with answers to things I have had questions about but can’t find that much information on. I love your channel and can’t believe just a few weeks ago I was subscribed at like number 40 or so and you have blown up. By the way I hope you have fully recovered and getting back the way life was before

Hey! Haven't heard from you in a little while. I hope you're doing well. I'm extremely happy that my video helped to answer some of the questions you had. I'm even happier that my channel was the only one with a clear answer! I know! My channel does appear to be growing steadily! Very exciting! Yes, I have fully recovered and back to normal everyday life! Thanks for asking!

Ok so I’m not a commercial climber, with that being said, I think we’re forgetting what we’re doing with “work positioning” (WP). WP is just that, getting in a good position to work, ie set a rig, cut a stem etc. The position is short term, sometimes very short term. Comfort is important but that’s more of a concern for rec climbing. Pro’s don’t hang around long (no pun intended). It’s all about safety and speed with safety seeming to take a back seat sometimes (not advised). So options 2 and 4 would be best for the rec climbers I would think. I use Sterling’s “Ultimate Positioning Lanyard.” It’s a classic 2 in 1 system. Either of the floating prussiks are great as a fast stem choke to prevent spinning. Make a thimble prussic for your lanyard and Bob’s Your Uncle! I like it mainly cause when climbing up a stem and you get to a branch one end is tossed over the branch while the other from low Ds is below. Unclip the lower set and climb above the limb without having to totally disconnect from the system. The system has many more uses. Also, don’t forget that a good cinching climbing line provides the best protection against slipping down the stem should you gaff out. Ask me how I know. 😅

Yes, this video was far from comprehensive insofar as what is available for work positioning gear and techniques. I wanted to keep it limited to what the average or newer climber have as far as a basic lanyard setup. I will probably make a follow up video which addresses more complex methods and gear. I looked up that Sterling Ultimate lanyard and it looks pretty great! I'd have to familiarize myself with its proper use, but I can give it a try simply by adding pieces of gear that I have to my current lanyard; I'll make my own, basically. I could make a video on the 2 in 1 lanyard eventually. Thimble prusiks are pretty awesome and that's basically all you need. Appreciate the detailed comment!

I know! There goes my future monetizing opportunity for this video! Haha! I usually like to keep thing PG-rated, but sometimes it just slips out! The prognosis is still good! =-D
