Being in the tree business for many years and work as an arborist for several also. I jump for joy when I see the ring being made around the tree to give the roots more oxygen and not having the mulch up against the root flair. I applaud you sir!

Wouldn't you be given the roots more carbon dioxide? I'm asking because I'm learning. I wanted to do that to some trees and I was told it was a bad idea because of root growth.

@@user-pm2xj9st6f exposed the root flair and taking away other vegetation around the the tree gives the roots more oxygen and allows the tree more nitrogen

I have been making squares around trees instead of circles. It makes mowing a lot easier and it looks fantastic. No one does this, so my landscape stands out even more.

I prefer the grass growing up to the tree. IMHO, it’s so much more work to deal with the mulch and weeds.

You don't want grass growing under the drip line of the tree. Compacts the root zone and competes for nutrition and hydration

I just use my grass clippings without any digging. Just through them at the base and it will not allow the grass to grow. It’s also a great fertilizer and helps retain moisture.

@@__cadlea8638dude, the mulch already keeps the grass from growing. And if you really want to go crazy use red wood chips and nothing will grow. Absolutely zero need to use chemicals.

Nice job with keeping the root flare exposed but cypress mulch is the wrong mulch. Hardwood mulch is the way to go

I shred the leaves in fall and put it around the tree. Free tree food and looks great.

Not necessary to use poison or dig. Let grass grow long and pin it down with mulch away from trunk. Reapply mulch as needed throughout season for any emerging grass. Add a layer of cardboard or weed cloth underneath. Making a circle edge around tree with rope and shovel is a good idea.

And i would not. Weeds start to grow on top of the barrier in a couple of seasons. Nothing gained and now you can't improve the soil.

Weed inhibitors usually have a broadleaf herbicide which is not recommended for use around trees. Just saying.

If at all possible, please use hardwook bark mulch instead of cyprus mulch. There are some pretty bad consequences involved in harvesting southern Cyprus trees.
