Those pesky little mistakes are offering up tons of learning. Nobody does it perfect from the beginning. It is wonderful of you to allow us to see and learn from this as well as the honest man that is present before your son. I commend you on fine work and wonderful parenting.

You're doing parenting right Cody! One lucky, good boy you've got there! Really enjoying the series.

So glad you considered using tempered glass or plexiglass in the treehouse. Glass + kids . . . you know the rest. Great project.

I am loving this project series. Those single pane windows bring back memories from being a kid. My dad and I had to replace many basement windows like those, (just smaller), after i would break them on accident shooting hockey pucks.

I am from Nova Scotia, we had "winter windows" we carefully stored and when winter came we put them on . If a glass broke you popped the frame apart and put new glass in.
@BenJamin-zw2pv
@BenJamin-zw2pv 9 лет назад
Haha - that window looks like every window in my house. We're in the subtropics though so heat retention isnt such an issue. When I take the glass out to have it replaced I remove the putty and framing nails and then the glass (obviously because I want to keep the frame but the glass is already broken). It's cheaper to take just the clean frame to a glazier and have them fit it rather than get them to do all the work. Thanks Cody

Cody I worked installing glass and cutting glass for about a year if you need any tips or tricks on installing straight panes please feel free to ask. Make sure and put spacing blocks underneath the glass. Basically glass is most stable when it is sitting on 2 points and no more. Also it is very much like setting a pane in a doors. I needs at least 1/8 inch on both sides and top for the glass to expand and contract. Also because this structure is moving you need to be carful to set it correctly, this goes for tempers glass as much as non tempered. And just a suggestion, you may look for old refrigerators that could have shelves in them. Laminated glass would also work which is in old display cases. Hope that helps.

@calebcothron2324
@calebcothron2324 9 лет назад
keep the deck boards "wild", it's a good aesthetic, especially for a treehouse. you're doing a great job, truly inspiring. Though, I'm not sure how I feel about it, it seems to go against all of my experiences with tree houses. to me tree houses have always been built by us kids with only a handsaw, hammer, and old wood from abandoned barns. Then again, this is probably much safer and I'm probably just a treehouse "elitist" lol. anyway, great work, keep it up.

I would love to send you a proper framing hammer. Watching you use that Estwing just makes my elbow hurt. I will recommend a 24oz California framer with a waffle face. I have a few loose heads laying around. If its something you would be interested in just let me know.

Vaughan made them for Sears. I used the Sears 23oz? framers for years because of the warrente but I dont think they do that anymore. I know Lowe's and Home depot quit carring them in my area. I kick myself for not buying one they had on clearance.

I got tennis elbow something terrible, felt like my whole elbow was kinda falling apart. I was doing a ton of framing at the time and was using the Vaughn 23oz blue max. I switched hammers to the Vaughn TiTech 16oz framer. Works great and all my elbow pain is gone. Plus lightening the belt is an added bonus. I have a video on my channel submitted for a friendly nailing contest.....I'd didn't even come close to the guys using a rigging ax. :P

So I'm a complete novice. But I'm building a treehouse with a carpenter. He said because the wood is so fresh and literally wet when we bought it, that it would shrink up a little over time as it dries and that would create small gaps. So he suggested I go ahead and put them all right together. Just curious if this is variable and your take on it. It will have a roof in a few weeks.

@ScoundrelzNTwK

A trick you can do squaring cuts with a skil saw is to clamp or screw a straight piece of planed wood or angle iron, as a guide, and butt the saw up against it. Poor mans track saw basically.

You sure that structure isn't going to be too heavy for those brackets? I know you like to build things brawny, but it seems like it's going to weigh a ton, or more.

So, what is the reason for sandwiching the half-inch plywood between the two studs?
@jeremybrua5523
@jeremybrua5523 9 лет назад
The reason for the 1/2" is to make the header 3 1/2" wide so it will be flush on both sides of the wall. Useing real plywood not osb will also make the header stronger.
@JonathanMWeiss
@JonathanMWeiss 9 лет назад
Thanks makes sense on the headers. But he also used the sandwiches on the corner posts as well. Just added strength there?

Jack might have to take your tool belt and give you an apron until that framing hammer gets working right. Ha Ha. I should talk, I shoot everything from a gun, I would probably smack my hand if I tried swinging a hammer again.

The older wood windows, when properly maintained, and fitted with storms, will give the same insulation value as a modern window. Problem is no one wants to maintain anything anymore.
@sid515able
@sid515able 9 лет назад
Not nonsense, when you put a properly fitted storm window on, you create dead air space, which is what insulation really is. Fiberglass, or any other form of insulation are systems that give you that dead air space. When you install a double pane window, and something happens to it, you can not fix it, you have to throw it out and buy a new one. With a good wood window you can maintain for a hundred years if you want. I don not think any double glazed window will still be around a hundred years later. People buy windows mostly based on the idea that they do not have to paint or caulk them, not because they are . 1 or .2 of an r value different. This minor amount is insignificant in the whole building picture.
