Congrats. Regarding the wider bars, if you're going to do any serious gravel, they're an absolute must for better control. Sounds counterintuitive, but on a challenging gravel descent you'll be in the drops thanking the gods of gravel for the confidence every mm of handlebar width affords.

I was against electronic gears. Then I rode a bike with electronic gears.....same story as you. I also got a mountain bike, with the in frame storage (stumpy evo elite), and this is another thing that is hard to go back on.

Gorgeous bike, there. I have a Checkpoint SL5 (in the Radioactive Red) on order. I should be picking it up the beginning of March. I’ve been doing around 1200 - 1500 miles on a Trek Marlin 7 the last few years. That has been 95% paved surface. I’ve finally realized that I’m using the wrong tool for the job. I can’t wait to get out and see what it can do.

@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda UPDATE: I picked up the SL5 on March 5th. She is a beauty. It is amazing how big a difference 10 lbs can make with a bike. I've already done almost 600 miles and climbed over 12k ft. I did a ride a few weeks ago for my 60th birthday. I did 65+ miles, taking care of 2 of my goals: 60 for my 60th and a metric century. Now to work more on the climbing muscles. 🚴‍♂😀

How tall are you? I just picked up this same bike in a 58 and about 183cm or 6’. My first new bike in about 15 years so I am very new to sizing. Primarily riding road but also commuting. I felt like the gearing was hard with the stock 1x compared to my previous 2x. Does the rear cassette make a big difference? I’m afraid I bought the wrong bike, but if I can adapt it like you that would be great. Perhaps the tires are more of the issue of getting up to speed on road?

I’m 186cm also on a size 58. Change the tyres to some 32mm slicks. It’ll then be the bike you were hoping for.

Thank you for the excellent video. I am on the fence for the Checkpoint or the new Madone, so this helps a lot. Seeing how those 28mm look on the checkpoint, not bad at all. Why did you choose a one chainring set instead of a double one?

I’ve had a single ring on my road bike for the last 8 years. I like the simplicity of it. As far as I can tell, these 2 models are so similar the big difference being the checkpoint will take up to 47mm tyres

Awesome bike. I’m curious you said that it is a 58 cm. What size rode bike did you ride? The reason I ask is because I was told that the geometry is different and that I may need to go down a size. Thanks in advance!

My road bike is also a 58cm. Being a gravel bike it has a longer top tube than the equivalent road bike but this is compensated by a shorter stem. It makes for a far better handling bike on the dirt so I’d suggest to stick to your standard size.

Think of stand over height too. I typically ride 56, but the SL5 in 54 fits perfect (purchased that one)

As far as I can tell they’re the same bike, the only difference is you can fit wider tyres in the checkpoint

I have both. Actually picked up this Checkpoint yesterday. Love it. They are definitely different bikes, different ride, different feel. Domane for fast road group rides. Could not keep up with them with the CP. Really depends on where the majority of your riding would be. Can have gravel wheelset and road wheelset and chose which model would suit you. My Domane is 2022 SL6 modded with carbon wheels and 105 Di2. If I had to choose one, it would be the Domane as most of my riding is road group/club.
