As an American who went to Chichen Itza from Cancun by bus... it was more like 4.5 hrs one way. I went back in like 2005, I was like 14 and it was during the last month that they were allowing tourists to climb the main pyramid. Going up was way better than going down!
@Travelsandmore333
@Travelsandmore333 Год назад
I was in Calakmul two months ago which is a not very well known archeological site in the middle of the Yucatán/campeche jungle. Most of the pyramids are still under vegetation. Took us 5 hours driving to jungle just to get there. We talked to locals and they have their pros and cons but for the most part they want this to happen. To me the biggest con, is that some of the least known archeological sites will lose their “adventure, lost hidden city vibe”. Also the cutting down of trees and fragmentation of the jungle will make it even harder for the jaguar to recuperate (this big cat is currently an endangered specie). But a big pro will be that this will create more jobs, more opportunities for the locals, it will also generate huge amounts of money which as a result, the government will be able to finance archeological expeditions and excavations as well as financing different programs aimed to help endangered species make a recovery. I’m very excited for this, most of the people that complain are people who live in big cities and have no clue of the things that happen in these areas.

I’m Mexican and proud of my culture but this video was mostly political rather than a educational take on the engineering and architecture as these videos tend to be. Also, I’ve been to many of the Mayan ruins in this area of Mexico and love the heritage but let’s be honest, people are defending the undiscovered ruins that were never going to be discovered anyways. There isn’t any interest in discovering the ruins until now that they have been found. If this train has the potential to give the country and out people a better economy I prefer that over ruins from the people who lived here thousands of years ago. We have starving Mexican people now not ancient Mayans. Let’s get this train done and continue to protect these places once it’s done.

Exactly, how could anyone expect them to excavate 25,000 sites? You're only going to learn so much from any one and most of that information will just be repeated over and over. And at the end of the day, how does discovering things about an ancient civilization compare to providing a better life for active communities?

There's some missing info in this video. First of all, the train is not only for tourism, it will also have shipping trains with no passengers at all. Secondly, the Tren Maya is attached to the greatest reforestation program that has ever been in the peninsula and also created new protected areas, some of those areas were pledge to big hotel chains and amusement parks but mainly for building luxury residential zones destined for politicians and businessmen (those companies didn't even bother to take in consideration the opinion of the locals). And what I think is most important is that this project will allow the construction of hospitals and clinics that are currently unaccessible to the people in rural communities. Some have to make around 6 hours to the nearest hospital or even more.

If placed in the context of the Mexican railroad history, it's harder to be a hater. Privatization in 1995 exacerbated underdevelopment in southern Mexico, with mile after mile of existing railroad abandoned to both freight and passenger traffic. This project replaces a small portion of what was lost. The problem with local accessibility can be addressed by charging different ticket prices to residents and tourists.

This is a hit video. I'm Mexican and this video couldn't be further from the truth. Many Mayan ruins have been actually discovered and properly preserved because of this project. And the government is planting millions of trees to make up for the ones being cut down for the rail way, in other words the impact on the environment is being properly mitigated...
@InvaderNatDT
@InvaderNatDT Год назад
Yeah as a non-Mexican this video definitely seemed very bias. It's just one thin line through a massive jungle, that ain't gonna cause any noticeable damage to it. Plus, we're talking about a train, not a highway with thousands of animal killing cars passing through every hour. And it's not like they're going to bulldoze any Mayan sites that are already known, or any really good ones. At some point one has to be willing to pave over at least some parts of the old world.

@keithsj10
@keithsj10 Год назад
@@InvaderNatDT I think the company that makes these videos is French. They have a perspective that's not aligned with reality. Zero importance should be put on "international law" when the subject is a massive infrastructure project that will improve millions of lives. Long dead civilizations aren't improving the country, but a railway project like this one most certainly will. Now on the flip side, these kinds of projects will bring lots of people to the area which could certainly ruin the surrounding rain forest if measures aren't put into place to properly manage it. You don't want people slashing and burning the forest down claiming they need to feed their families. But they gotta have the railroad in place first before they can figure out the rest because Mexico is a poor and corrupt country and this project will never get finished if someone at the top isn't relentlessly pushing it forward. Sometimes you gotta step on some toes to get things done. Europeans apparently don't agree with that. Fk 'em. It's not their country.

This whole thing is ironic, several of the aerial shots have roads that parallel the tracks. One thing to not that is not being discussed is that much of the track is being laid where existing track and rights of way already existed. Another irony, all of the people complaining about Carbon Footprints, do you realize how many car and bus traffic will be freeing up the environment? You do realize that vehicles in Mexico and many other countries do not require catalytic converters. The train will solve many problems, problems that existed when the roads were being built 60 years ago.

How are the ruins destroyed and the jungle spoiled? One safe thoroughfare does not cause that, only the ruins in the way are being destroyed, and only the ones that are the equivalent of a Mayan Wal*Mart. This move is going to pay off big for everyone (though like in all good things, moreso for the rich) and might have enough play to let Mexico finish climbing out of being a failed state due to the massive increase in interest in pleasure trains.

This project will be far more beneficial to Mexico than those long dead civilizations ever were. And they're not running out of long dead archeological sites. Plus, it will give the entire region a pathway for goods to travel into, around and out of the region. The US has the Mississippi river. Mexico doesn't really have a similar capacity, many countries don't. This RR project will bring tourists but also freight and opportunities to the indigenous peoples living there. Overall it's going to be a good thing for the people of Mexico.

Speaking from Mexican POV, I think it’s simple preserve all ruins by putting them in a museum, where people can see them up close and pay for a whole tour, imagine if they didn’t cut thru most of those ruins wouldn’t have been found regardless. Second I say they consider passing over parts of the jungle that are conserved and have protections. This would solve many of the issues

And the party was also accompanied by people from the region to make sure sacred or historical lands were not trespassed, violated, or destroyed.

As a Mexican who lives in the region, you completely left out the FACT that one of the MAIN USES and BENEFITS of this train line is that most of the trains will not be carrying Tourists but instead, CARGO CONTAINERS / MERCHANDISE / CONSUMER GOODS / FOOD and MATERIALS from INTERNATIONAL PORTS on the region to cities and communities within the Peninsula. While it is being promoted as a "Tourist Train" in reality it is MUCH MORE a system of transportation for goods, materials and merchandise.

I’m pretty excited about this project! I love the natural world, and I also enjoy comfort: where I live, on the west coast of British Columbia, it is by virtue of some beautiful roads (say, the Sea-to-Sky highway) that people can get to spots where they can be immersed in nature. it is thus wise, in my view, to create inroads into the natural wealth that surrounds us. as far as the Mayan heritage-in my view, that civilization left remains in terms of ‘technologies of thought’, which are the true gifts, and the physical remnants are secondary. the splendour of the Mayans is accessible by anybody on earth, simply by tuning in to their frequency. all our greatest advances, after all, are ‘located‘ within consciousness itself.

Mexican here, let me give you some important context. Mexican society as a whole is currently divided in two main "camps", the ones who fiercely (and I can't stress enough "fiercely") support the president in every single thing he does, and on the other side those who oppose him on most things he does. You have to take comments with a grain of salt because of this because the supporters of the president will invariably tell you a fairy tale about tren maya, "everything is perfect and great there are no issues". While the other side will raise the concerns presented on this video. So yeah I see comments from both sides already. You will have a hard time finding objectivity on this matter. But I can assure you one thing, there is no consensus, half of Mexico is against it and half is in favor.

Good video on the progress of Tren Maya, but seems slanted toward a fairly small group of people that portray the government as somewhat villainous. The wealthy will benefit as usual, but the average Mexican that will be directly affected will most likely gain from the financial trickle-down effects. Similar arguments could be made all over the planet (US highway system, Three Gorges, Suez & Panama).

This video makes is seem like the mayans built everything in a straight line and the mayan train is going to go right through it. There actually investing millions of dollars in protecting and researching as much as they can. Anything worth preserving there moving to museums or diverging the rails to protect as much as they can. They do weekly updates on this project so theres alot more information out there. Lets not pretend like every nation hasn’t had to clear trees, drill through mountains, dam rivers for mega projects. There actually building a few land bridges and tunnels for animals to safely cross. They have massive nurseries to replant trees in other locations for the trees cut down in various projects. Most negative information comes from the opposing political parties that have been losing alot of support over the last couple of years. There also rebuilding homes for locals that have had to move. Towns and cities near the raiload have benefits like improving there power grid, installing internet services, paving roads, ect…

In addition to human and animal proof, the train will need to be hurricane proof. Also those alleged ruins that are going to be ruined by this were never even being explored prior. And this will possibly uncover new ones or provide easier access to them. It's this big push that allowed places like Shanghai to build their comprehensive transit system in a short time. If they're worried about damaging forests, or hurting ecosystems, they might as well close off the entire peninsula to all vehicles.

The majority of Méxicans want the train, it will benefit those who live in the surrounding rural areas. They will have a way to travel to the populated zones and acquire jobs and schooling, and it will boost the region economically, something that the south of México has always needed. It will also benefit the tourism industry. My understanding is that it's being built responsibly and every artifact that is being found is being taken, preserveing it and later being put in an exhibit, and new museums are being built for these artifacts. As for the underground rivers, they have changed certain sections and rerouted them. As well as built pillars to reinforce and stabilize certain delicate sections. (Like everything it's a balance of modernizeing and maintaining the natural environment.) All those who are opposed are paid actors by the opposition, who never gave a dam about the environment before, they're stooges, trying to hinder Méxican progress and innovation, all to line thier pockets.
