Hello, and welcome back to another video from Italy.
This time I am travelling on the Trenitalia Frecciargento ETR.485 Pendolino from Bologna Centrale (Bologne) to Roma Termini (Rome).
These are some pretty old Pendolinos, dating back from 1997, so they aren't quite as modern as what you might expect from the others. But are they any good? Watch the video to find out!

I like the cupholder idea! Means you're less likely to spill any on the table, keeping it clean and freeing up space for other things, and no need to hold onto your drink when you're going round bends to stop it sliding all over the table 👍🏻

ETR 480 is pretty comfortable, probably the Bologna-Firenze line isn't the smoothest in italy, the same issue happen onboard the ETR 500 class which is one of the most comfortable hst train in europe probably. The 480 on Roma-Napoli wasn't bad for example!

Nice video! Never been yet on a different Pendolino than the ČD one (ETR 460) but I always thought that the ride is quite rough considering it's a flagship train but it never seemed THAT rough as seen on your video, I never spilled a cup of water for example even while snaking through a super hilly rocky terrain when the train fully tilts. People never realized that the ride quality is actually not that smooth until the mighty Railjet arrived (which provides probably the smoothest ride today, at least in a Central Europe).

I agree, but please note that the top speed the Czech Pendolino can reach on the Czech and Slovak network is 160 km/h which is quite a big difference to the 250 km/h in Italy. I believe that if the Czech Pendolino run faster, it would be exactly the same issue.

Quick info: Trenitalia is replacing these ETR 485 with the ETR 610 (able to run also in Switzerland) and ETR 700 (High speed EMUS from the Netherlands) And "in exchange" they're refurbishing the ETR 485 and converting them to the AC current to give them to Greece

I enjoyed your video very much. It sounds like the ETR.485 unit you were riding in is due for a major overhaul ! Most ride very well, with few squeaks and rattles !

In 1994 the other version of those trains ETR 460 had tests in Poland and it could be the 1st Pendolino in Poland.

I think you got a train that has been poorly maintained, because normally these trains are very comfortable, even if they have a certain age on their shoulders now. Nice video! :D

These trains are being replaced by the infamous AnsaldoBreda V250 and ETR 600 and sold to Trenitalia's Greek business TrainOse where they will have a second life.

01:00 Omg, I traveled from Bologna to Venice on the Frecciarossa last October, and I was absolutely lost and confused in this pedestrian tunnel. The way doesn’t look at all like being the main way of how to get from the main station building to the high speed rail platforms, lol. And then suddenly there is this huge underground cathedral! So weird! 06:20 lol, wtf? The only pendolino I have traveled on is the one in the Czech Republic, which looks very similar like this one (both are 3rd gen pendolinos) but in my experience they were always very smooth, even in sections with bad/overused tracks. The pendolinos there go only up to 160 km/h though because of speed limits, so I don’t know how they would perform going 200+. Still, I’m surprised!

If only Alstom could of built the Class 390 Pendolinos for the East Coast Main Line. Just like the Class 390 that is currently operating on the West Coast Main Line. These Pendolinos are so beautiful and fast. I have been on the Class 390 Pendolino from London Euston to Birmingham New Street.

I took this train this may, on the Route Trento - Verona PN. Fortunately I get a Frecciarossa instead of this bumby pendolino 😂. The only sad note was that there is no high speed route between the 2 cities, so our top speed was only 118km/h (even cars on the nearby highway where faster 😕)

When showing the seat details you described the seats as 'brown' but on my screen the fabric and the plastic trims are blue! I noticed that other seats shown in the distance do seem brown. Weird or what!

I've been on this train a lot of times focusly for work the train itself is super comfortable and if your tired you will instantly fall asleep the service is good and the snaks and drinks too. Anyways only 1st class has trolley service. The only thing is that the train is very bumpy and shaky like the older sister etr 401 i really raccomend this train for medium-long trips👍

The appalling (ok, maybe I exaggerated) ride quality might be because of not much suspension and the design of the bogies; the most recent train I rode in Italy was the ETR 500

It's technicaly/build-wise still a tilting train for higher performance on classic curved lines through the mountains(Ancona-Roma f.expl.). Even the tilting mode has been disabled it'll never reach HS-stability ... and therefore a poor service on such lines. So - the ETR 500 is the better successor to the decent gran comfort class on the Direttissima.

unfortunately the ETR 485s rough ride is so to the fact that those trains are 30 years old now! they are from the early '90s and they start to feel the age! in the 90s they were very good but today we have a lot of more modern technologies for damping vibrations. and just a clarification. technically the ETR 675 Italo Evo is not a Pendolino, even though it is part of the "New Pendolino" family. the ETR 600-610 Frecciargento is the last Pendolino to be built for high speed railway in Italy. there's simply no profitable need anymore as we have built and keep building new high speed lines that don't require this type of hardware. so yeah, the 675 not technically a Pendolino cause it runs mostly on high speed track now. Great video tho!

Exactly the same sorts of ride problems as the old intercity APT. Much of the technology was sold to Italy when the APT project was scrapped. It was the quality of ride and motion sickness that doomed the APT and I don't imagine these pendolino sets to be any different.

I would definitely prefer these videos if they were narrated rather than just captioned - but I can understand it if Superalbs doesn't want to either talk while filming or record a voiceover afterwards.

Confusion! You state Bologna Centrale has 23 platforms with 19 at surface level and remainder underground yet when we get below what do we see? Platforms 18 and 19!

good trip report if you think bologna centrale is a labyrinth you have not seen the likes of bank/monuement station and whilst the train might look nice if it is badly rattling it could be down to poor design ir age which in that case it shouldnt be used on high speed routes

Same mean windows as the British Pendolinos. At least the seats line up with the windows in the standard class vehicle.

Pendolino was never a smooth runner. Especially not in the first two generations (ETR 485 belongs to the second). It became a little better in the third (ETR 600 / SBB Astoro / PKP EIP) and fourth (Italo EVO) generation, but it still lacks the air suspension, which is incompatible with the tilting technology.

@@SuperalbsTravels Good question. The Pendolino in Czechia is going smooth too and is using tiling technology. It's in my opinion mainly about condition of the rails and maintenance of the rolling stock.

the connection between ground level and underground tracks is embarrassing! a real disaster in terms of design and intuitivity… and the underground station itself is a missed opportunity in terms os design and services
