Trent and maynard are true dark geniuses of the music industry. Also feeling the dark sounds by the likes of Gary Numan, Massive Attack, Portishead, HTDA, KMFDM, Tricky, EL-P, Unkle, AllFlaws
Passive was a kick-ass track that Trent didn't want released. It just makes you wonder if there are songs just as good that he won't release. A lot of artists of all backgrounds, often think their work came out just mediocre when others will see it as genius.
👍👍 I think the word you are looking for is artist, not perfectionist. He doesn't appreciate being idolized. In fact I think most musicians that do their job do t appreciate that.
I expected different from audioslave. Took me a whiiile to get that they were just a rock band. Oysterhead with claypool and trey and Stewart Copeland was cool. But he’s right expectations crush super collaborations at birth.
Super-groups where you've got 4 famous people in a band or whatever usually suck, but the ones where a few famous musicians who are already known to be mates just decide to make some music often either work well or die off before getting something out.
Imagine all the beautiful amazing music out there that will never see the light of day due to musicians feeling insecure about their art when to fans it would be a holy triumphant!
if you only knew how right you are Kelly,my friend you hit it right on the head,ty for saying that it goes along perfect with what I was just saying up above in my last two comments or so:-)!!!!!
Them knowing there are sycophants like you out there willing to lap up whatever jizz certain artists put out isn't going to convince them to release anything. Creating is really hard. Creators have unique personalities. If they don't wanna put it out, they shouldn't put it out. They aren't just fountains that spew out whatever pops into their heads. It's a process.
In this case, the best stuff created by Tapeworm has already come out anyway: Passive by APC and Potions by Puscifer... so the fans should already be fine.
Trent is the best interview subject. Lots of artists hate lame or repetitive interview questions (cough,Maynard, cough) but Trent always has something interesting to say. You could probably ask him his favourite colour and he would turn it into an interesting and insightful answer.
Musicians influences change throughout the years. Maynard wrote a song about his kid "H.". People's taste in different sounds change. Just because Trent wrote more harsh music when he was younger, doesn't mean he will now. His life has much more order and stability. So of course his music will reflect that. Both Trent and Maynard have grown. So have their musical tastes. Maybe you haters should attempt to grow as well instead of being stuck in the past.
Not everyone's tastes in music change as the artists do. Their opinion of the music stands, regardless of the intentions of the artists. Art is subjective.
God damn it, can people make a criticism of a popular musician(s) these days without that obnoxious, dismissive, and very assholeish word "hater"... constantly being thrown around? It's very annoying and rarely ever applies. You don't get to simply cast some stupid generalizing word and dismiss everybody who dislikes something you enjoy. Also, as "James Duff" said....not everyone's tastes coincide with the change of a stylistic direction of a particular musician/band....which is perfectly fine, and not the least bit "hater" behavior. If you like heavy metal music, you're not going to like it if your favorite metal band starts playing electro pop, are you? Also, no....not every musician has some large scale change in their music, just because their personal lives change. That's another untrue generalization....
Springfeeeel I don't mean to play the Devil's Advocate unnecessarily, but I can think of a few metal bands who I would listen the shit out of if they made an electro pop album.
+Shaun Whelan Right on man. I love old Tool and NIN but I also really appreciate how both bands evolved. These guys aren't like AC/DC putting out pretty much the same album over and over again.
Shaun Whelan - Keep in mind that Trent was a Drug Addict during the early years and after getting sober his lyrics have become more mature. It's not that he aged, it's that he grew up. It's amazing that as his music transformed so did his physical self. from pale skinny junkie to healthy and buff.
It's really interesting to hear that Trent regards him and Maynard as friends, whereas in the WTF episode with Maynard, Maynard says that they've "met" . . .
I love that he said he was afraid to write another NIN record. That just proves how dedicated he is to his art. Whereas some bands put out an album just to put one out and sell something, Trent knew he wasn't ready, so he waited.
I think it's interesting that he says that the end result was 7/10. There are now two released tracks that are now confirmed by Maynard that they were once Tapeworm tracks. Passive (released under A Perfect Circle) and Potions (released under Puscifer). Now maybe this is just me, but I think those two songs are absolutely phenomenal, especially Potions. It just makes me wonder what the rest of the unreleased material sounds like.
Is that in its entirety or do you think they were released on different platforms because they went through changes to become what they are when released?
@@toodrunktotastethischicken They're essentially "remixes" or re-recordings from what I understand. So they aren't the original versions of the Tapeworm tracks.
Back in the Kazaa days I downloaded a bootleg copy of APC performing "Passive" the song title of the recording was called "Vacant" though however. The live version was a bit slower and heavier. I swear I downloaded more demos and bootleg recordings off of Kazaa than actual records back then lol
That's so nuts to me. I'm a huge Perfect Circle fan and Passive has been my favourite track by them for the last 10 years or so. Had NO idea it was a track by Trent and Maynard. I only found this out yesterday lol. Now to go listen to it again with fresh ears and love it even more
@@TheHulksMistress I heard them play that song in Scranton Pa before it was on an album. The live version they played then was way better than the album one recorded later, in my opinion. I think Maynard may have been drunk that night. One of the greatest shows I’ve witnessed.
all of trent reznor albums are genius he puts his heart soul and pain into his music not many so called artists do that anymore anyone with a studio can make quick crap music these days.
Still waiting for this super artist collaboration. *sigh* would be the best thing ever. However at least they were comfortable enough to say "meh this isn't so good. Fuck it for now"
I love that he said he was afraid to write another NIN record. Just proves how devoted he is. Every good writer goes through that--otherwise they're sending out shit.
Yes please. Maynard and Trent 10/10! I thought tapeworm was a 9/10 but he's the one making it. I know how that goes. I have scrapped so many drawings that people would say were very decent works of art. We are our biggest critics. One question though Trent, when has the pressure from the label ever stopped you from making anything? Maybe my view on this matter is skewed and biased by my love for you and your music. Keep on kicking ass boys!
I saw Trent perform in Winnipeg and was blown away by his sheer stage presence. One of the only bands that doesn't need studio smoothing to make it sound good. Queens of the Stone Age opened for them, and it was full bunk by comparison.
Both sounds combined and giving birth to a baby out of this world is just... I can almost grasp the idea and imagine what it could be and feels incredible but it's just there in front of me and I'm waiting for it to come to full fruition one day. When it does... oh my god... It will both start WW III and create world peace, AT THE SAME TIME.
Actually, I respect this much. What we consider awesome deserves regulation.... otherwise anyone can do it. We don't need the "crap"; many bands do this well. We want what we've come for... they (after gaining commercial appeal) deserve their fans to follow them to receive the art they deserve. (ex. river of deceit - which speaks of 90s more than any other song.)
+shnoogums1 Yeah if you listen to Vacant (that's what it was originally called), it's pretty weak. Passive is an amazing song, but the original is no where near as good, at least from the versions I've heard
Trent was not very happy that the song was essentially stolen and released, since he never agreed to it's release. It was a collaboration, both where suppose to agree to it.
Daina Marie Two perfectionists are perpetually going to be displeased with their own work, which is why Maynard (especially) takes his sweet time writing new material. Unless it's subpar Puscifer stuff, which he spits out faster than a viral loogie. But if Passive, and Potions are any indication of what Tapeworm might have been, while good, neither song is a "10." Tapeworm should ideally have been the best of both bands, but since the planet would have exploded, we may never see anything from them together.
***** I see your point. I do love Passive...or Vacant, whatever. It's just too bad Maynard & Trent had to be at odds but...idk the details only what I've read, as much as I worship them both, I don't think Trent was okay with Maynard just taking Vacant & making Passive. Still....it is one of my faves along with several other APC songs, as well as many NIN & Tool somgs.
***** Also Passive is a song that makes me think of a particular passive-aggressive person I know. The quality isn't what I liked, so much as my identification with the theme. 😆
I think people are afraid to say it but I'm gonna say it cause that's where I come in usually lol,but yea Trent ,and I love Trent and some of his music don't get me wrong but yea Trent looks nothing like a rock star and I find that extremely sad my friends lol,but to each his own I guess ,maybe he just wants to look like a regular old Joe now????thats a darn shame man,I know I'm gonna get comments tellin me something otherwise but I'm prepared and have put myself in position here to receive them I guess kinda purposely but uhh do any of you other rockers out there feel like I do,I'm gonna start a movement where everybody is totally honest and just speaks what's on their mind Ya know, the movement will explode and go worldwide :-)
*gives this great answer* "cool. NEXT question" Wait, that was ... a well thought out coherent answer for a simple 'yeah ok cool so anyway' I understand he's got limited time and other questions so whatevz. but still.
Maynard and Trent are like Chocolate and Peanut Butter. Separately they're good but together it's the perfect combination. A real shame this project never went any further, these two doing a song(s) together would've been a slice of Heaven.
Hey, this is recent! Nice to see him talking about this after so much time... and to know they're still buddies! =3 ...too bad we won't be hearing any of it though... =(
Trent Reznor is the man. Cannot wait for How to Destroy Angels to release Welcome Oblivion on Tuesday. Heard the stream on Pitchfork and the album is sickkkkkk.
I think it makes perfect sense that they would be Looking to make a 10 out of 10. They are both so amazing and they are both me favorites…other than I am completely in love with Trent. But I totally get what he is saying. You get 2 people that talented together and their music is not understood by most people it would be hard to make a 10 out of 10. I can say my biggest wet dream is them making a song together but as much as they are alike they are different. Trent has his own style and voice and Maynard the same. Maybe one day but they are killing it separately and as long as I know they are friends that’s all that matters to me. I LOVE YOU TRENT!!!!!
I love the fact that his standard is so high that he calls the outcome of his super group "mediocre". He just doesn't need sales things like that. He's too busy with doing a great "day job".
I hope there is some collaboration soon. Trent, Danny Lohner, Danny Carey, and Maynard all together would be epic but I don't know how that would work with all those egos. lol
Lisa Zoria might have been a little too much techno for Maynard. I don't see Maynard putting out anything unless it's amazing to him. I wish good ole Layne was still around. He may have changed the outcome of audio slave and velvet revolver not that Scott weiland wasn't amazing
Perfect Circle's Passive from eMotive was, in my opinion the best "cover" on the album. That is Tapeworm stuff... that said, I love APC, Tool, and NIN. If not metal, top 3 bands. I am not a huge Pusifer fan. It might not be good. Maybe it would just take a fresh look like Passive. Material is there. But it probably (in its current form) sucks.
I don't think I'll ever understand why you posted this response. How was I to know that you'd "gotten over it"? There was nothing in the comment I was responding to to indicate that. Did I touch a nerve? Are you ok? Did you actually post a comment on the Internet in 2016 and not expect a contrary response?
Thats weird just yesterday I realized I was old enough to understand tool and NiN lyrics and relate to them now I found a video talking about both of them
There are some pretty cool in-studio photos from the Tapeworm sessions out there on the web, if you search for them. Mostly of Trent and Maynard, and various pieces of equipment. Neat stuff
If Trent and Maynard ever decided to ACTUALLY release a full-length album; it would literally tear a hole in the universe and it would fucking PHENOMENAL!!! 🤘💯👌👍🎸🥁🐲
Hopefully they'll revisit this ideas they have together as friends and rip out a portal through another plane of existence by the means of their long-awaited EP
Very cool guy. Basically doesnt want to put something out unless it is 100% kick ass and from the heart. Despite the fact that they could make alot of money. Saw NIN in Michigan 5 years ago and still in my top 2 concerts of all time!
I love how this question ALWAYS gets asked. I'd rather they start working on new material now then try to release anything that was done back then. Be patient people I'm sure once their schedules work out we will be rewarded with some cool music.
The irony here is that if whatever Tapeworm material that was created were to be released, even by Trent's personal "7/10" estimation, there are plenty of hardcore fans who would see it for what they want to see it as and call it "1,000,000/10" anyway, purely because of it being Trent Reznor and Maynard James Keenan (or, in their minds, Tool altogether, which it wasn't) working together.
Two of the most brilliant-minded artists of our time putting their styles and ideas together sounds like a great idea but, what will the world think about that? I'm personally hoping to hear more about it to tell ya the truth. But that's just me.
“I was taking some time out”...I fucking live the guy. I don’t reason he takes time out. Humans do that. He’s more of a song. I wake up and have breakfast (I don’t cos I’m ill). TR wakes up and another genius song has occurred.
