This is a classic video. Maynard just kind of moseys on up, puts down one of the sickest live screams, drops the mic, does a little jig with zack, then proceeds to answer a cell phone call. haha
He's trying to play it off like he has better shit to do than be on stage with a bunch of try hards pretending they have a message. So he's getting ready to get on stage with his own group of try hards to pretend they also have something to say. Good shit man. FUCK YEAH RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE BRING THE POWER BACK but also don't forget to grab a t shirt on the way out.
@@monkehgamingofficial Not before screaming his soul into the mic in an unbelievably sustained wail first. Chillin. Chillin. Y'guys are pretty good. Chillin. Oh cool, I found a mic. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Yay, let's dance! Whee!! Oop, gotta take this. Hello?
You may be mistaking severe performance anxiety for peaceful and quiet. There is nothing peaceful or quiet about that man's lyrics; he is one highly disturbed individual, although I certainly hope he has found some healing and a good therapist to help him work through the abuse he endured.
@@gonzaloabril9737 I wouldn't call Maynard a musical genius by any stretch. Tom Scholz I would call a musical genius because he not only wrote all the lyrics for Boston's music, he also wrote, played and recorded every single part of their debut album and THEN had the band come in and learn their part to play on the road. He also built and engineered every single recording studio in his basement every time he moved house (over the last 40 years). He not only did that, but he also engineered several products that bands all over the world have been using for decades now when they gig live. Just Google his name, Tom Scholz of Boston. That man is a musical (and engineering) genius that makes Maynard look like a naval-gazing, self-indulgent artist. Maynard is good at what he does, and I have several Tool CDs and have been a fan from way back before I first saw them back in 1993. Tom Scholz is the legend that Maynard bows down to in awe. I bet you if you asked Maynard, he'd probably gush like a fanboy. ....and Tom Scholz is humble as hell. I mean really humble. To be rather blunt about it, Tom Scholz puts the entire band of Tool to shame with what he can do (and he doesn't take years to get it done, and he does it all himself).
He was likely plagued with anxiety standing there under the stage lights. Surely you realize he has MAJOR performance anxiety, and that's why he's always in the background of the stage in the dark while the rest of Tool is covered in spotlights?
So many awesome things in this video. Maynard bobbing his head the whole time til it's his turn, Danny creeping the back and helping out on the drums, Tom side eyeing Maynard as he was singing, RATM sounding fucking amazing, OH and of course, the Maynard scream.
How long do we have to wait until another group of musicians can tear it up on stage like this? It's been too long since this amount of guts has been poured out to mass audiences. Come on, music. Come back.
haha, i mean, while i think there are thousands of amazing live bands when you know where to look, i love the way you put that. I agree tho that we dont get gigs like the one above enough anymore. Just the raw attitude back by powerful songs that dont suck so hard
blacktwofight11 dude i was about to tell Dvdsky "go see Clutch, NOW" but im glad to see somebody already put em up there. Dvdsky, there is NO band that rocks harder than these guys do right now. Ive seen em twice in the last couple years and Neil probably comes the closest of all current frontmen in terms of being able to get the crowd so unfuckingbelievably pumped just with his voice like Zack did, in combination with some of the most basic yet badass riffs imaginable (a lot like Morello's are.)
I don't think it's the "music" that is the problem, I suspect it's the people who are the problem. Gen Z doesn't think for themselves; they group-think and obsess about their physical appearance, especially the dudes. Damn, some of those guys have more hair and skin products than me, AND better arches in their eyebrows, and I'm a woman!
Rage and Tool were and are great friends. Tom and Adam were roommates in college. How cool that there music is so different but they have the same message overall. Fuck the mind control of the government and greedy corporate interests. Both bands speak to the power of the people and the preach it well.
The members of Rage actually were considering both Zach and Maynard to be their lead singer and ended up choosing Zach, which was the right choice for that band. That was a long, long time ago.
maynard came in late and the band had to place another measure. you can see morello eyeing the drummer and maynard just to make sure they are all in the same spot.
Yep, I saw that side-eye look to the drummer, but I thought he was more worried that Maynard's stage fright was going to grab hold of him. Thus, I missed that he came in a beat late on vocals.
You guys it's clear Maynard's phone almost fell out of his pocket when they were dancing around in circles together. When he grabbed it to put it back in his pocket he put it to his ear to make sure he hadn't accidentally called someone or picked up a call when doing so. You can't think the man is stupid enough to try and talk on the phone in that loud ass madhouse.
Carrie Carden There's literally NO way you could tell why he put his phone to his ear in that moment. It was less than one second of video showing it. Stop trying to act like you know.
Nibbly Nobbler okay, this is really not that difficult to understand. You see him and Zack swing around on stage, you can clearly see Maynard grab at his pocket to make sure his phone didn't fall out on stage. Natural reaction to put it to the ear to make sure nothing happened. It's called common sense. Do you really think he was trying to take a call on stage??? You can't be that ignorant. Then again...
+Carrie Carden What he wasn't dancing around he was giving him a hug? And it was quite obvious that he was taking a call. Not that it matters, but it's plain as day considering he only did the hug for about 2 seconds
I agree with that! He's a genius. I first started listening to their music when my son came home from college and I was hooked! I was into classic rock but the first time I heard him sing I fell in love with him! Been that way ever since. I'm 57 yrs old and I'm like a school girl when I hear him sing! He does it for me! Saw em in concert and was high for a week just from being that close to him. That sounds creepy right? Old people need love too! Lol!!
Nah, think hes just making sure it all lands as it should after Maynard came on with his bit in the wrong place. Not hating on the guy, i adore his music, but he did do his bit in this song 1 bar too late... But proffessionals as they all are they made it golden.
Maynard is schooling the kids...... Maynard is kick ass..... The new TOOL album kicked the shit out of me. Pnuema !!!!! Danny killing the drums !!!!! OMG
This was the first Coachella. It was a good show. Last three acts were Ben Harper, Rage then Tool. Tool's set was amazing. They had those circus freaks with bobbing heads hanging from the top of their stage set then walking around on stage.
David Beltz. Way to keep it positive. Would you say that you are insinuating that there is better music today than there was in 1999? I understand there was spice b*tches, 98 degrees, backstreet clowns, and other horrible music but back then there was at least great music to offset it. I challenge ya to name 3 good musical acts today that arent autotuned, hand-me-down "one hit wonder" producer abortions, that get unjust radio play. Please, inform us...
@@natedoggie incredible isn't it how many haters have come out of the woodwork in this particular comment section if you read all the comments its infuriating, if any of these moppets were to be stupid enough to pipe up on one of Maynard or Tool's actual RU-vid videos they would get torn to shreds instantly but because they rip on him in a mostly unrelated post & no one here has any respect for true genius & talent, they all feel like they aren't the pathetic losers that they actually are the rest of their worthless lives that isn't the 30 seconds it took to write their jealousy fueled hate spewing post, oh & of course the 5-10 seconds after wen they thought they were super clever, so that's like 30-35 seconds of their entire life where they misguidedly actually felt like they deserved to breath the same air as the rest of us, pretty sad really or just plain pathetic depending on how empathetic ur feeling at the time i guess!!!... Peace!!... :)
Nijs Tim his phone almost fell out of his pocket when he was moshing with zack, he put it to his ear to see if he answered a cal or made one when they were dancing around.
Morello is a legend...how did he come with his ideas...pure genius...I saw them a the big day out years ago back home at mount smart stadium in Auckland...it was raining cats & dogs & the audience rocked out in the rain...unforgettable
