The reason was Barbara Streisand's reaction to Colorado passing an amendment that removed protection for gay people. She called Colorado a bunch of hicks and declared that she'd boycott the entire state. Matt and Trey, while being pro-gay, came from Colorado and thought that she went way too far. So they dedicated the Mecha-Streisand episode to get back at her. Barbara didn't took it well at all, showing that she was unable to take criticism and satire when she was targeted. So Matt and Trey decided to keep going with that joke. So basically, it's two parties who share the same beliefs about gay people deserving protection. But Matt and Trey were offended that Barbara was insulting an entire state (including the people who voted against that amendment, the gay people living there and those who didn't vote at all or couldn't).

If i recall correctly she threatened to move out of colorado over s dumb state law, Trey and Matt also thought the state law was dumb. Despite their mutual distain for the state law, they found her threatening to remove her presence from the state to be pretentious and tone deaf
First of all, Barbra was never a resident of Colorado. She vacationed there (Aspen) with her then boyfriend who did own a home there. In 1992, Coloradans were about to vote on an Amendment which would prevent the adoption of legislation that protects homosexuals from discrimination. Barbra, being very active in equality and civil liberties, called for a boycott among her Hollywood friends of certain towns supporting this legislation. The amendment eventually did not pass, but some folks were angry that Barbra chose this sort of tactic. Anyway, that's the main gist of it.
