Triads are one of the strongest melodies that we have and in this video I am going to show you some triad exercises and how you can use them to make strong and more interesting triad jazz lines. Triads are used all the time in jazz by people from Wes Montgomery to Kurt Rosenwinkel and Lage Lund and everybody else.
For each of the triad ideas I will go over a lick using the inversion or pattern and I will also give you some exercises.
The exercises will test your abilities with both triads and scales since some of them are really difficult to play. Especially the Spread Triads exercise are tricky for your right hand, but the inversions are also good for having an overview of your music theory when it comes to triads.

Do you practice triads like this? Can you play the diatonic spread triad exercise?
@wigleboy
@wigleboy 6 лет назад
Yes, when harmonizing a melody between fat chords, if needed. Or playing outside on a well known song (but that can take a while to get right).
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
Cool! I find it quite a trick exercise to play 🙂
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 6 лет назад
I haven't but I'll be adding these to my practice list. :) I think I can play the diatonic spread exercise. For instance, I can play most of the Holdsworth chords in your Modern Chords series if I play them like a triad/arpeggio, but can't really play most of them if I try to play them as chords. They're tough as nails. There is something about having the middle finger on little E with the ring finger on A or D which is anathema to my left hand. The middle finger has to position itself with the skin & the fingernail to pinch down on the string & it's very uncomfortable.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
I am not sure I follow? You find it difficult to play the spread triads as chords? 🙂
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 6 лет назад
I've been binge watching your videos. lol. I think what I'm trying to say is that Holdsworth Modern Chords appear to be playable spread triads. :)

TIP to remember: If the chord is MAJOR (CMaj7), the triad from the third is MINOR. If the chord is MINOR (C-7), the triad from the third is MAJOR.

Jens' videos are awesome! This is one of the best jazz guitar instruction sources you'll find anywhere. At 8'38" in this video Jens refers to a series of triads as being in 1st inversion but I think they are actually in 2nd inversion. Just putting that out there. Let me know if I'm missing what's going on.

7 diatonic triads per scale , 3 inversions per triad, 12 keys, and 3 main scales ( major, melodic minor, harmonic minor ) equals 756 triads! Yikes ! I better get busy ….

No worries! The way you use the altered scale it is the same scale ascending and descending, that's how it makes sense. If you have a written out example of something else then let me know I will check it out 🙂

Hello Jens, great video lesson on triads. I do have a question though, you have a video on spread triads. Are spread triads anything like octave displacements?thanks for your hard work
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
Thanks Ed! Spread Triads are similar to octave displacement, but since it is about a chord not a scale or a melody then the concept you want to think of is drop voicings. You could see a spread voiced triad as a Drop2 triad.

Great lesson as always! By the way Jens, just wanted to ask something if it's not a bother regarding the top post in this link: music.stackexchange.com/questions/22709/does-improvisation-in-the-classical-idiom-differ-significantly-from-jazz-and-fol How accurate is the top commenter was saying regarding Jazz Improvisation?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
Haha! He is really full of himself 😄 Jazz and Classical music are very different genres. Instead of him being all high and mighty then tell him to improvise like that in a trio. I await the sound of that recording with hope and joy... It is true that since bebop we reduce the melody to chord symbols, but that does not mean that there are no themes, build up and thread running through solos of 5-10 minutes. As a Jazz musician you practice that as well, we just don't have all these set formulas that they do in classical music. I just spend a few hours analyzing a transcription of one of my own solos and I was surprised to see more connections over several sections of the form (I don't say that to say that I am really good, I say that meaning that if even I do that then just imagine how Metheny, Mehldau or Scofield are able to)

Great lesson!! I just got one question concerning the second practice. You used F major to demonstrate but why the second triad you play is a G major triad? Shouldn't it be a minor triad considering it is the second interval in the F major diatonic scale? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Keep up the great works anyway!!
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
Because I am not playing the triads of F major. I am playing the diatonic triads of C major and there you have an F major and a G major next to each other. Does that help? 🙂👍

Hi Jens! First of all a million thanks for your lessons ! In a day with so many videos available it sure is relieving knowing the consistency one gets in checking out your channel. That said, let me complain some: in this lesson you go on about stressing the value of knowing your triads and I'm with you but say about 1:32 you're going over the dmin triad and then say, "I'm using the f major triad". I'm following you in the dmin triad world and get thrown off. I hope I'm understood withput offending you. Then you say," it is good to try out different triad to see what works and what doesn't.." Jens I'm on the dmin triad where the notes are D F A, how many or should I say how many different triads can I "try out" with these notes? Anyway, your videos are the only ones (besides lick videos) that I watch over and over in order to fully understand what's happening, that, my friend , is a compliment!
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
I think you are missing that it is a Dm7 not a Dm triad? So the notes available are the chord tones : D F A C (notice the F major triad?) And of course also the rest of the C major scale : C D E F G A B Does that help? 🙂
