I have been playing for 15 years and you are the only teacher who has been able to break down the wall i've been at for a decade. Thank you Thank you Thank you. You are my hero.
I’m mostly a rock player but this is phenomenal advice for learning to play over changes regardless of genre. This kind of thinking ahead on chord changes is really improving my playing and making it far less boring. Thank you so much.
This remains one of the best teaching videos for starters. I cannot thank you enough. Can you do the same, with the scale and arpeggios, for a minor and a 7 ? And maybe explain how they are connected. Thank you again Jens, you are a great teacher !
This was really cool! I'm having a lot of fun messing around with major 7th arpeggios, feels like I'm rediscovering a deeper interest in the instrument
*How to start soloing over a II V I with arpeggios* In this lesson I will take a II V I give you some arpeggios and an approach to make melodies over the progression so that you clearly follow the chords. I also wrote a few examples of the licks using the arps to give you some ideas. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PyHXN3Vxhz4.html Via this lesson you candDownload a Free C major II V I backing track from QuistJam : quistorama.com/track/648489/2-... As always you can download the examples as a PDF here: jenslarsen.nl/?post=2472 Hope you can use it! #guitar #youtube #guitarlesson #jazzguitar #ibanez #axefx #arpeggio
You went back to the basics on this one but I think you covered about everything of what you'll find on jazz basic ii V I I've found on RU-vid. Great video!
This is so straightforward and simple, I wonder why it's taken me this long to learn how important this is. You have really uncomplicated things for me. Really appreciate it.
Aaaah.... now I get.... learn the arpeggios and then when you can do that in your sleep start chucking in other notes from the key! The scales (sorry for the pun) just fell from my eyes! Thank you! What a great teacher.
Started your lessons today. Been playing guitar for years but finally got the urge to learn more theory/jazz. Just want to say thank you for selflessly sharing your knowledge!!!
I'm a tenor sax player, and I really appreciate your approach to breaking down the improv in language that I can understand, looking forward to watching all of your video's, as someone else previously commented, I'm looking forward to "binge jamming" using your material!
Thank you for this lesson, Jens. Your explanation makes the whole process extremely clear, and also open-ended for further individual practice. I have learned more from your videos than any teacher in the past.
Wow.I just heard a pod cast interview with you on stitchers Learn Jazz Standards podcast so I ended up here by chance remembering your name.this melodic improvisation technique is GOLD man. I'm using this as a beginning jazz piano player and I've got to say this video is nutrient rich!my left hands been super busy on chord voicings for 251s in any key and now right hand improvd melody lines are coming into my practice sessions.perfect timing man THANKYOU!
Thank you so much Jen! You're method is very clear and simple. It's not easy to find teachers to simplify the wonder of jazz music. Now i'm going to study with your lessons.
Thanks for your awesome jazz instruction ! I been listening to your videos and in my opinion your about the best sounding teacher on the tube ...really love your playing 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎸✌
This is great. I’m proficient in the 5 forms of C and several other keys but still learning the instrument deeper now. I’m having the hardest time understanding improvising in jazz. Thanks for breaking it down more simply. I have a lot of work to do. All the best 🎶🙏🏻
thank you for all the great videos. been playing blues all my life, but since getting an ibanez as53 recently im getting more into jazz. especially your blue bossa video has helped me a lot
Jens, I've been learning jazz on youtube, but I found your channel last week and I'm very excited! Your lessons are clear and simple, and I can easily understand, much more than in other channels. Thank you from Brazil!
Terrific lesson - thanks Jens. You provided a very logical and clear approach to practicing these changes. I'm looking forward to exploring more of your lessons.
Thanks to share these precious videos! Finally I find materials that incentive us to study and understand about all the particularities of our passion, the jazz guitar. There are contends for a long time of study...
I found your channel today wanting to learn some bossa nova chords and im impressed with your knowledge, your very clear way of teaching, and how youre willing to clear any doubts in the comments, subscribed immediately, keep doing your content man, its amazing, best of luck!!
Hey Jens, I had some time today to watch videos and this one came on after one of them. Its AMAZING to watch the GREAT evolution thats occurred on here with your videos. This was obviously one of the first ones. You've really built this channel from the grass roots, early days of RU-vid. I didn't realize how long you've been on here. This is an inspiration to everyone out there wanting to start their own channel. Your teaching method was always GREAT. The channel has evolved to not only great teaching, but now it's filled with excellent editing, wit, and humour. It's gone beyond just great teaching, it's entertaining.
Thank you so much for the time you take for create this kind of stuff for all the students and musicians who are starting in the jazz world. I appreciate it so much. Blessings.
I've been working on this exercise off and on all day and for the first time I was able to play something really nice. For a moment I wasn't seeing the shapes of the arpeggios, it was the most in touch I've felt with guitar..and then it was gone lol and I'm taking a minute to say thank you for this lesson, all these lessons. Alright, I'm gonna get back to it.
I'm really enjoying your lessons, Jens. You have a great way of explaining the concepts and well thought out techniques for applying and practicing them. You also have a refreshingly down to earth presentation style, that avoids any pretension and makes the mysterious world of jazz far less intimidating for someone dipping their toe in the water for the first time! Keep up the great work.
Thanks Jens, greatly appreciated. In the video you touch on practicing arpeggios using alternating note patterns, rather than straight up and down, enabling you to use them more melodically. I'm stuck practicing straight up and down, and find using arpeggios to create melody quite challenging. Could you outline a practice routine to help with this?
Maybe pick a note (like the third?) and try to write 10 lines that start on that note? Try to play the when you can then try to use them in an improvisation. You need to do this a few times probably but it will help expand your vocabulary greatly. Let me know how it turns out! :)
I stumbled into jazz. I’ve always played it (standards here and there) but never devoted a lesson plan around it. So I’m bout learning the fifty recommendations you have I’m finding the hardest part is sight reading! I am going thru all your videos! (Mahalo)
Sir, excellent lesson ! I subscribed just now...and I’m glad to have found you! I’m 66, still gigging...and still working to improve. I’m sure to learn ways to spice up my blues and such with a jazz twist....with your help! Thank you !
Thank you very much for your lessons! I just recently discovered your channel and I wish, I had known it earlier. When I started to learn jazz guitar three years ago, my motivation dropped after a while because all the content that was available to me at the time was either too complicated or not applicable (because it did not sound like jazz at all). Because of your lessons I am starting again - so thank you so much!
Great lesson Jens. I have viewed several of your videos and you are a very good, informative and inviting teacher. I also love your Montreal Jazz Festival shirt!
Thanks for the lesson. Good stuff! Remember folks, write out each of the chords' notes next to each other. From there you can make up lines in your mind before even picking up the instrument.
damn. wish someone had told me this 15 years ago. I never took lessons and youtube wasnt so big back then. i gave up on jazz cuz i was just totally confused. Instead i just went ahead and learned a bunch of Dylan songs. Certainly not a waste of time, but I am happy to be getting back into this stuff with some actual guidance this time. thank you!
Hi Mr.Lassen It is such a great joy to learn from your lessons, even for a rock guitarrist it's a step into a fantastic new Dimension. Thank you so much! RS
Great video, everything is clear and well explained. I've been playing for 20 years and only in recent months started to focus on jazz and a more arpeggio based style. This has been a big help. Keep up the good work.
You're very welcome! I am glad you can use the videos! If you have any questions then ask! If you want to help me then you can share one of my videos and help me spread the word with your recommendation 😊
Hi Jens, this was a really great lesson for me. In addition it ties in nicely with a previous lesson on adding chords on a single note line that you posted recently. These fit very well together. Thank you!
Man, i just found you, i can tell you are awsome jazzman, i personally am struggling with the basics. but i must tell you what bugs me about this post. You used II for the minor.....!!! chord, which after two yrs. of theory, i just know that's incorrect. Sorry, but i would be so much more happier if you would just change your Roman numerals to reflect the correct progression. PEACE! I like the vid, that littl ething just bugs me though, just tyring to help.
I do love the way you put this video together though, my hats off to you , the split screen tab with visual lesson is the best i've ever seen actually. Of course i haven't seen the stuff that cost money, like the Chick Corea online stuff, i'd love too, but, first i have to sell my soul or something to get the money.
Wow Jens! Fantastic video man! I love your approach & am going to study this video in depth tonight when I get home from gigging! Thanks so much for posting man! I'm going to check out all your stuff for sure!!!
Thanks Jens, i'm the dude that asked for the lessons in your most recent video, but as I said, thanks to my fretboard knowledge i already know all of these arpeggios and chords, so i think this is going be a very productive lesson for me as a beginner, thanks again for the playlist Master!
@@JensLarsen This is the exact point i was trying to understand, know which notes to use in advance, so i can use my ear training and my musical perception to create my own melodies and licks based in what i "hearing" in my mind, not being stuck in scales like i was and am until today, in all those 10 years of guitar learning. I know it will take years to master, but i think is the most important thing a professional musician must looking foward. Thanks!
I've been playing guitar for 50 years and am only just discovering how much fun jazz music is. Having just found and subscribed to your channel I can see that you lessons will help a lot. Is there a set order of videos to follow so I can progress in a logical direction? Thanks very much for all you are doing and greetings from Spain!
Thank you Emlyn! Jazz is indeed an exciting adventure, I enjoy learning myself everyday! I don't really have an order for the lessons. Everybody is different so it is impossible to have an order. If you find the material in this video easy then try the same on a blues? I have lesson on that, or maybe something with chords like my latest lesson? How does that sound?
J, Thanks so much, seems to be a long time since the last post on this video. Seeing how you have set it up for far away strangers...well it is almost intuitive, being new to this whole phenom, I appreciate your time and efforts to bring this 'sound', which goes from this jazz to...anywhere really in different genres of music. I have been following your weeklies for a few months now and am finally able to connect the dots(notes). As a result, 'am motivated to continue continuing. :) cheers
I know this is an older video but just wanted to say thank you. This is very well explained and easy to understand. I'll definitely be working on this for quite some as I'm just beginning to learn arpeggios.
