The first film that I saw which portrayed the Indians as a noble, brave and humorous people. Loved it for this and other reasons too. Great movie imo. 👍

I rather think they were portrayed as just normal human beings - capable of nobilty, bravery, and humour. There was never such a thing as The Noble Savage.

I can't say that I'm a big Kevin Costner fan. But there are also no words for how much I love this film...

This was my favorite film that had a majority of true Native Americans casted. The work of both Hollywood and the Native American communities for portraying accurate life on the Frontier when both settlers and natives worked together side by side to carve out a living in the Great Plains and elsewhere that hadn't been settled.

In "reality," those women wouldn't have been cowering in the lodge, but if some were, their skinning knives would have been drawn, and about five minutes later that Crow would have been dragged outside, and so mutilated, eviscerated, scalped, eyes knifed out, you know what's cut off, that noone could tell what it was! Also, the idea of THAT MANY Natives having rifles, pistols, is historically absurd! But hey, lots of people believe that "Dreamcatchers" are a real part of native Lore, and not invented in the late 50s for sale at reservation gift shops!!

@@John-l8m It was Pawnee not Crow That's depicted in the movie. Sacred hoops, what we call dream catchers, originated with the Ojibwa people. Archeological evidence from the Red River War shows that Indians used repeating rifles like the Spencer, Winchester, and Henry. All facts

@@shaynejenkins446 I guess it's obvious I didn't pay much attention to the movie? Also can't recall if they ever specify the date, when it took place? That would help to clarify the "75 Natives shooting Spencers. Still, it's a fine movie, nicely landscaped, etc. another small detail is the brave ("Wind in his hair" of all things) yelling his own name, what's your call on that? And since you seem informed, can you tell me the average jail sentence for any man caught selling (or trading) a rifle and ammunition to an "Injun?" I wonder how much a Spencer cost in 1885 or so? Also-and I mean no disrespect - do you happen to be "Part Cherokee" through a female great great aunt, or grandmother?

If you really want to really understand Dunbar's feelings watch Steven Pressfield's It's the tribes stupid all 5 episodes . And read Sebastian Junger's Tribes.

This was a great film, but it does show the main character was guilty of treason. Not only did he desert his post, he armed the Sioux, who were enemies of the United States, from a supply of government weapons. He then aided them in fighting off the Pawnee, who were actually allies of the United States. So, yeah, this explains why he was arrested when he was discovered by other soldiers.
