Tribal People React to John Lennon's IMAGINE For The First Time 

I always took those lines to be about the institution of religion as a political force in the world. Individual spirituality and faith are set apart as a personal philosophy and way of seeing the world. I think for the most part these men understood that.

Thank you for this wonderful video. I love everyone in it, and their compassionate and tolerant tone. Although we are not of the same religion, it is refreshing to see such tolerance and understanding from everyone. On religion in this song, I think rather than saying there "is no heaven or hell" or religion "should not be", John Lennon is simply saying imagine IF that were the case and people were simply loving for its own sake. It would be like a parent wanting their child to be good because they see the wisdom in it, and not just because of fear of punishment or desire for reward. Even with that wisdom, it does not mean there cannot also be a parent. Peace and thank you for what you do!

I think that John Lennon with this song means ... how beautiful and more simple life is if don't exist religion, possession etc. all things that ties and bound our lives. His religious beliefs were somehow pantheistic. And I think he wasn’t a communist either, he criticized communism in songs like Revolution. He had more like an anarchist political point of view.

George Harrison however was the most spiritual one . He’d go to india to an ashram and it seemed to resonate with him deeply

@@RJ-ho8pn No, he wasn’t. He used to contradict himself a lot and that song “God” was just classical John being edgy. He was clearly a spiritual guy, since he wrote songs like Tomorrow Never Knows, Across The Universe, Mind Games and a bunch of songs based on Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. He talked a lot about the Bardo Thodol, the karmic wheel and literally the chorus of one of his most famous songs said “Jai Guru Deva, Om”, and said the next in an interview: “I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.”

He was against religion as a whole and, as a lot of people do, separate religion and spiritually. One example is the previous comment about Buddhism. Buddhism isn't a religion, it's a philosophy. Big difference. Islam and Christianity, those are religions and organized ones at that. Atheists like me don't want to prevent people from having their beliefs, we simply wish the same as America's Founding Fathers: that everyone is free to practice their own religion even if that includes not having one. The issue is when your religion dictates my actions or freedoms. Then, we have a problem that even Jefferson would disagree with.

I was nodding as I read your comment when it occurred to me that, maybe, the Internet reflects the real world accurately. There are a lot of terrible things, people can be incredibly cruel to one another, and yet, if you seek it out, you will find beautiful things -- like this channel, say. For all its downsides, I never would have "met" people from such distant cultures without it -- text just isn't the same. We're all so different, and yet, so similar. This channel's especially nifty. As I savour the bits of wisdom these guys will say, I'm admiring the colours of the room, it's decor, their clothes (well hell, I can be a child sometimes).

@@1michelemichele1 You are a 100% correct. And this phenomena has really reinforced my belief, that once you scrape away surface impressions we are all remarkably alike. Maybe one day we will learn a way to celebrate the things that bring us together rather than focus on the things that divide us

@@1michelemichele1I know this is 2 months later but I really like the part in your comment about seeking out the beauty in the world .. with everything going on right now (I’m sure your aware) I haven’t been able to find anything beautiful about this world or us as humans .. for the past year and a half and especially now I’ve felt incredibly hopeless and depressed about the future and the current times we are facing .. how can we be so cruel and show such hatred ? Maybe I need to seek out the beauty more of the world to see that there is still hope left.

When I was a young Muslim teenager, I remember watching a Fundementalist youtube video accusing John Lennon as a satanist and Illuminati member because I was obsessed with eschatology and wanted all the conspiracies to be true to convince myself that my religion is true. Now, looking back as a young adult I cried after realizing I was brought up and conditioned so all the ill natured misinformation was targeting peace loving, proggressive people. I even remembered reading a free book published by an author of the Flat Earth community I got from a welfare convention (that somehow got into Malaysia for some reason) which had a few pages that mentioned that Carl Sagan is a devil worshipper and that Iblis gave him the knowledge to breach the sky to go against God. I gobbled it all up so easily without an ounce of critical thinking or doubts because I was scared of being judged by god for thought crimes. Then, at 25 years old ,I realized I'm an atheist.

I was born in the north of England same place as John Lennon seen the same hard ships of life and had the same education, and lived in Lahore later. Our fathers hated war and religion because they seen the horrors and hate it did. We know religion is NOT the answer to this world problems, I WAS VARY LUCKY I TRAVELED AND LEARNED TO EXPERIENCE THIS WORLD AND ALL ITS PEOPLE, TO TRAVÈL NOT TO VIST AND SEE WONDERS OF THE LAND IT IS TO LIVE WITH OTHER PEOPLE, LOUGH WITH THEM, UNDERSTAND THEM SHARE WITH THEM, AND EVEN CRY WITH THEM, THEN YOU LEARN TO LOVE THEM, I did that in Pakistan, John did that in America when the they was fighting in Vietnam!

It's the kind of thing you never forget. I was in college at the time in upstate New York; John Lennon was living downstate in New York City. The news came just as the nightly late newscast at 11:30 pm was going off the air. "This just in: John Lennon has been shot. The Tonight Show is next. Good night." 🎶Da dat dat da dah, da da dat de dahhh🎶 [Tonight Show theme plays] It happened so quickly, and was so unimaginable, that you didn't trust your ears. You didn't trust that you'd actually heard what you thought you'd heard. There was Johnny Carson on the TV, doing his monologue, everything was normal, but no, it wasn't normal. The Earth had just tilted on its axis. More news started to come in. They broke in to say that John Lennon had been taken to a hospital, and then again that he had passed away. And this time hearing it clearly, you still couldn't comprehend, that this man, who so wanted peace, had been shot to death outside his own apartment building. And then, all over the campus, one by one, people started playing their John Lennon records in their dorm rooms. You could hear this cacophony building as more and more payed tribute and found solace the only way they could, with his music. And this went on all night. I think people even came out and started singing "Give peace a chance." And of course, somebody high up in the central tower dorm turned their mega speaker out onto the quadrangle and played Imagine, over and over. And that went on for a very long time. It was indeed a very sad and memorable time.

That is literally what the whole song is about. The reason he spoke of religion is not for some atheist agenda to deny god, but because religion is a reason people kill for. Thus, the tells you to imagine if there was no such reasons to kill for. Very simple. Further, if you only value life and other people because of religion, then how good of a person are you really? It is more likely you value your life less because you think of an afterlife. That is why he sang about there being no heaven and hell - rational people value life far more because it is the only life they believe in. Which is to say, even if a religion teaches love, it still gives avenues towards blind obedience. That's why religion is one of the only things that can convince an otherwise rational person to commit wickedness like blowing themselves up. You can teach love and tolerance without faith, so why involve god in that unnecessarily? Are you only willing to be good if you are promised an afterlife?

John also explained more... He half-expected to climb the ladder, pick up the magnifying glass, and read some vulgarity or statement of irony. Instead, he read "yes," a message of hope and positivity. It really moved him.

The song is also not about "there should be no religion" it's about "what if there were no religions that fight battles between each other".

Agree. I believe that he wanted us to imagine meeting each other without the things that seperate us, like money, status and beliefs. What starts war? Greed, wanting more, thinking my beliefs are more right than someone elses, thinking one owns the right to dictate someone elses life... He wanted us to meet, as true equals. Not saying religion is bad, but he had a vision of us meeting with an understanding, no matter backgrounds.
