Your comment made me cry. I was already feeling emotional, as I always have done when I watch the video for NCTY, but it really hurts now. Sinead was an amazing woman and I relate to her in so many ways. She really was a warrior. I know she was never bothered about it and actually rejected it but she was and always will be one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen as well being a beautiful soul.

@@Gemma626 When many North American people saw her for the very first time on television, in the early 1980s, with a news story of this new singer, many, many people found her different because of her shaven head. It was new here. Back then, people were still trying to understand blue, green, purple, spiked, etc., hair. These tribal people have never seen many of the most current things in the West. Never. Why wouldn't they be thrown somewhat by Sinead's signature look? They're honest. They obviously weren't trying to insult her, but giving their first impressions, as is what is expressed in all the videos. Have you or I never been thrown by an incredibly "new" look?

All these men feel the music they hear their hearts without understanding the language but Abdul has a wisdom that comes from life experiences and age. I believe when she tore that picture up, it was at a time when many many Catholic priests world-wide were just being publicly outed as child abusers. Because I remember watching that live and feeling the loss/hurt of a Catholic child who just learned her religion has been hurting their youngest most precious members. I was more surprised that Catholics would choose their leader over their own children-that was a choice that would never ever be made in my family. My great-grandfather in fact made the opposite choice, to protect his children from the priests.

People from a totally different cultural, economic, and religious background that have often touched me with their wisdom. But when you look and listen to the way these people review whatever is served to them, it should become clear there is a deep inner wisdom in these tribal people from which there is much to learn by us in the so called “modern world”.

The song that the elderly gentleman starts to sing at around 19:50 shows that he understood the sadness of this English language song based on your translations. Even though it is very likely he is one of the individuals in the group who might not know how to read, his wisdom and years of experience allowed him to make the connections.

I just happened on this and found it very beautiful. Their empathy with the emotions Sinead was expressing and the way they immediately prayed for the repose of her soul. Very moving.

I understand Abdul's and his son's feelings. My father used to be a strong, active man, but Parkinson's and age has left him weak and unable to do most to the things that he used to. It's hard.

Forget Prince and the maid. Sinead sang the song and gave it meaning of her own. She didn't really know Prince at all and she certainly wasn't singing for a maid that she never met.

Exactly, thank you. And I bet, to most of the people who have heard it through the years, it's considered to be a love song, or rather a song about lost love, if you will. But I gotta say, that whole "Mama" part, does cause some confusion at the end.

She did actually spend some time with Prince after, I think, she recorded the song, at his home, and they got into a big fight, she claimed, because he was pissed off at her for recording his song and for its being such a huge smash success, for her, something like that, and that he ultimately got abusive, and that she had to escape by running off, but, who really knows, with both of them in life almost certainly being complicated, ego-driven, temperamental, yet at the same time probably insecure, very sensitive, creative artists, and all. They may have been drinking & stuff, as well, of course. This reaction vid was beautiful and sad, like the song, and like O’Connor, herself was, imo. RIP 🦋Sinead🕊️😢

I have seen a lot of people call this a cover song. It isn't a cover. Yes,Prince wrote it ..but it would only be a cover if he recorded it first. Which he didn't. He wrote it specifically for her to record. And didn't do his own version until 20 years afterwards
@chrismorgan9153
@chrismorgan9153 Год назад
Prince wrote it for one of his protégé bands, The Family. They recorded and released it in 1985, so this is a cover and was not written for her.

@@chrismorgan9153 Nice Chris! You are correct! You have to cut me a little slack though, because that album sold less than 1,000 copies worldwide on vinyl. After it hit with Sinead,it was rereleased on compact disc,and has become a collectable it looks like. But again,to date it's barely sold....less than 10,000 copies. If it wasn't for Google.....you wouldn't be correcting me 😁

This isn’t where I expected to spend 25mins of my evening, but I am glad I did. I found it so touching, and the insights and understanding of those men whose lives are so far away from Sinead’s were so interesting. Their reaction to the tears is beautiful. I have subscribed and will watch more. This is such an unexpected delight, and I think poor Sinead would have approved. Not sure about Prince’s maid though.

Funny that the hair is confusing to them to see if she’s a man or a woman. Don’t most men and women in their country keep their hair covered? All the people in the interviews do, so that’s an interesting take to me. She looks extremely feminine to me, but it’s interesting that they don’t think so. No judgement, I just found that really interesting.
