Two Los Angeles restaurants have claimed to be the birthplace of the French dip sandwich: Cole's Pacific Electric Buffet and Philippe the Original. These two restaurants are from California, definitely not from France.

The dish had its origins in colonial America. The early English would prepare Sally Lunn bread and dress with a piece of roast beef or venison. Then use the drippings to moisten the prepared "sandwich" of the day to make it easier to digest and add some season highlights.

I go to Phillipe's for their egg custard. I drive all the way there from West Hollywood! And sometimes I go to the Original Pantry for their custard too. Still can't make up my mind on who's is better!

I've been to both and they are both sadly disappointing. For a French Dip to be good...the Au Jus needs to have a good rich flavor. Both of these places were seriously lacking in flavor.

@@kellysue7738 I don't think I've actually eaten anything other than custard at Phillipe's, but my husband and I love The Original Pantry's eggs, bacon, and hash browns served with that amazing sourdough toast! Damn, now I'm hungry! 🙃

Philippe's was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, who claimed the distinction of having created the “French Dipped Sandwich.” One day in 1918, while making a sandwich, Mathieu inadvertently dropped the sliced french roll into the roasting pan filled with juice still hot from the oven. And viola! This was in LOS ANGELES, BTW....

I swear I'm being sincere, not sarcastic: you should get out more, or take a chance and just try something. I fell in love with Indian food when I was 18. At my first job after high school, there was a nearby neighborhood that had a great pizza place, a Jamaican place, a Latin American place, a local fast food place, and a bad Chinese buffet. Four of the places were good, but you could only go to those same four places so often, ya know? One day I tried Indian food just to eat something different, and now Indian is probably my favorite "ethnic" food. I make curry about once a week, sometimes twice. Anyway, ya have to eat, so just try something different every so often. Not everything I try is a winner, but it's fun to try new things!

Unfortunately the quality of the subtitles has really deteriorated. What these guys are saying and what is typed out in English is not what is being said. And some words like 'deletable' are used entirely incorrectly and that distorts the viewers understanding! Come on guys, the thousands of Western, non Punjabi speakers who subscribe and contribute deserve a better service from the creators. If necessary, get good English/Punjabi speakers to assist in translation before releasing a video. Don't just guess. Just a suggestion that had to be made
@Anne_Onymous

Thank you for informing us of this. And I really I hope it gets addressed. We are all just stuck having to trust that their words/ideas are being translated and represented properly.
@MD-wv7ee
@MD-wv7ee 5 месяцев назад
@@Anne_Onymous Don't get me wrong, these guys have done a great job. But with each video I have watched over the years, I note that certain text is printed that was not said or completely the wrong text is printed which distorts greatly what was actually said. Often when the guys are saying food is not spicy or just requires some seasoning, the creators refer to it as bland/unappealing/not liked. And that's not what the guys are saying. It gives the impression that they didn't like the food or they're being dismissive of it. Also 'Doc' Tahir may call himself a (Paindoo) 'uneducated villager' etc but he is nothing of the sort. His command of his language, his use of words, terminology etc is absolutely fantastic (and I'm not talking about his medical claims, which are dubious at times)! Maybe I'm being pedantic but as someone who understands what they're saying then reading what is printed in the subtitles, trust me you guys are missing out
