Thanks Bob, the next part should be posted at the weekend. I find using the angle plate easier than tilting the head and you are not disturbing the tramming.
Hi Ade, I just stumbled on your Channel ,and this in particular. Thanks so much for capturing al the details, and explaining it so clearly. Got to say, I love your workshop and setup, from what is seen in this video - there's probably not a lot you couldn't do. Cheers!!
Engine wear like that guide always makes me think of how robust the design must be. Customers fixate over how things have to be to a tenth of a thou clearance for them to work. We obviously don't want something that worn, but it does show not to panic when things start to get a little loose. Nice job Ade.
You're spot on there, before the restoration scene there must have been many well clapped out Triumphs, Nortons et al. knocking about with folks not giving a fig if they smoked and rattled a bit. Thanks for the comments Michael.
It does give a nice sense of job satisfaction, the number of people or companies willing or able to do this type of work are diminishing here in the UK. I have wondered at times if I could actually turn this into a business and make a living from it, but then it stops being a hobby I suppose.
Nothing to do with valve guides but look under the head and if you have HDA cast into it you have a high duty alloy head with the improved breathing, from Slough you can see a statue of a caster in asbestos suit or there was in 1978, i dont know where the choked ones come from, I'm here in aus my bike still running since new
I have not seen the bike, I believe it may have been dismantled some time ago. I was also astounded at the state of it, and only that one guide, the others seem fine apart from normal wear, strange!
A suitable sized end mill would have saved you a lot of time, centralise the hole then ream it, if you are making the guide anyway it doesn't have to be a particular size. No need for the boring head.
Except if you don't have a suitable end mill and reamer, sometimes you just use what you have available yes? Many thanks for watching and thoughts, Ade
