Ever wondered how good a Giraud trimmer really is? Here's me ripping though 1000 pcs of .284 brass. I sped up the majority of the actual trimming but this should give you a good idea of what it can do and why it's totally worth the price if you can afford it. I've had mine for years now and it's like part of the family. I got my giraud last night, i was able to unbox and trim 500 5.56 in about 20 minutes and still made it to my mother in-laws party on time. I dont know why, but I was not expecting this thing to make life so easy.

That is impressive. I have done 2000 cases on a L.E. Wilson trimmer took me probably 20 hours. Sold it right after as I knew I did not want to put my self through that ever again. Excellent trimmer but just too slow for that quantity.

I just loaded some 308 cases trimmed on the Giraud. Yes the chamfering does have a huge impact. The bullets seat way easier from what I noticed.

Why didn’t I see this product before I purchased the Hornady prep center. I need a buyer for mine before I think of buying this other trimmer.

Thanks John... why do you use latex gloves? New to reloading (my trimmer is still in the box)... do you glove for all stages or just for trimming? Appreciate your videos - very helpful!
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 4 года назад
If you watch my videos you’ll see I ALWAYS wear gloves. I do it because in some cases I prefer to keep reloading byproduct off my hands such as lubing and tumbling and in other cases I don’t want my finger oils to get on anything like dies or parts that could corrode over time or on the brass or bullets. To me it’s just good reloading hygiene so I use them all the time.

@@FClassJohn This is excellent advice. I will also add to help reduce exposure to lead and heavy metals. I've been a CNC machinist for a decade and a reloader for double that. There is no reason to risk chasing your grand kids around for what should be a fun hobby. Gloves are cheap. I have both Black Nitrile or lighter colored ones like John is wearing. The light ones are great to smear things against your hand to see if there is leaks, transfer, finding things that shouldn't be there that may not show up with a black background.

Is this worth it over the dillon? I was strongly considering buying their trimmer for my 750
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 3 года назад
I think so because it trims/chamfers/deburs all at once and that’s pretty priceless. I won’t get rid of it until someone designs a press mounted trimmer that can do all three.

Ok, great effort, BUT, I never saw you check one case with a caliper or anything. So, how can you be sure of what you were doing, or, does it really matter? Is by gosh by golly a class I need to take for a quality precision reload? How do you set the depth of cut?
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 3 года назад
It was already set to my desired depth so I wasn’t worried about it. I don’t worry about what the actual number is. What I do is take a once fired piece brass and adjust my pilot so that it just barely takes anything off. Then after the second firing I double check to make sure that it’s not taking too much off but again it’s based on how much it’s taking off, not by an actual number. I just look to take the least amount of material off while still achieving a trim as well as the chamfer and deburr on it. I used to get wrapped up in measuring for overall trim and just found that it never made a difference and in fact I had better brass life as well as everything else by just taking the bare minimum off each time like I do.

Did you ever consider the Henderson precision trimmer versus the Giraud?
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 3 года назад
Yes but I found the Giraud more versatile in terms of where I could put it and being able to move it around. I know people who use a Henderson and they love it but it just wasn't for me.

Yeah I know it doesn't seem right and to a lot of people it's laughable or wrong and I understand that, but the point I was trying to make is that it really doesn't matter to me. I know what I'm feeling for and in the end I'm barely trimming anything anyway. Could I measure every one of them, sure, but it wouldn't increase my score.

@loupuleff571
@loupuleff571 4 года назад
how consistent are the case length measurements after trimming ?
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 4 года назад
So once I have it set I honestly rarely measure because I’m not someone who believes that cases have to be exactly identical across every single piece of brass although the trimmer is pretty much capable of it. I went through and measured 30 random pieces for you out of that thousand that I just trimmed and it was a low of 2.164 and a high of 2.167 which I’m fine with. If I spent a little more time on each piece of brass I could get it even better but I’m fine with where it is because it’s not enough to cause any issues for me.
@loupuleff571

@@FClassJohn i guess the only time it would matter is if your weighing your brass thanks for update !!
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 4 года назад
lou puleff, yes but in those cases most people would weight virgin brass and sort it at that point so even trimming wouldn’t matter too much after that because weighing is looking at case capacity for the most part.

@@FClassJohn I don’t reload for any sort of competition, just for being able to take an animal inside of 800 yards. So far I’ve shot out to 500 yards at a cow elk. With my Hornady Case Prep Center I’ve learned to get no more than .001 in variance between my brass. It’s definitely way slower than this trimmer
