In this week's video I'm showing the creation of these jars from the trimming stage to the finished, fired vessel, (I forgot to film the throwing section, sorry!). I'll also show you the vessel coated in my new glazes towards the end of the video and discuss my conclusions made about some of these surfaces.Thanks for watching!
P.s, I'm seeing what uploading earlier does as my analytics say that 12:30pm should be when most of my audience is online and using RU-vid.

I didn't realize this before, but you speak so clearly in your videos that the auto-generated captions are able to get every single word perfectly. Precise in everything :D

Thanks so much for these videos! They have really helped me as a beginning potter. It would be great if in a future video you could go into more detail about how you clean up the glazed pot before firing--smoothing out drips and covering up the tong marks, for example.

Ah wonderful, yeah lets see! I suppose ultimately most of my videos end of accumulating views over time, rather than in 24 hours. For instance, a bowl making video I made received a majority of its views months after being uploaded, rather than in the day it was put online. Truth be told I have no idea how the system works! Anyhow, thanks for watching Mark, as always.

@@floriangadsby no, thank you Florian. I just had a look through your channel and there are millions of views on the shorts. These days attention spans are shorter than ever. It might be worth considering making a series of shorter videos each week and release them through the week Monday wedging and pulling. Wednesday trimming and glazing. Friday fire and finish. Each around 5 to 7 minutes. Of course, I'm no youtuber but I'd like to see you getting millions of views a week. You deserve it and your content is better than most.

I've recently found your videos and I really like them. Handmade pottery has always fascinated me and I enjoy learning about it. I have a question: when you load your gas kiln there seems to be pots already glazed and fired in the bottom (see 20:07 ). Are they being fired again and why? Thank you for making such amazing videos! Happy New Year!

Ive been doing pottery for about 5 month bow and I love the fact I can transfer the 3d pictures that I see in my brain, to a 3d object in front of me. Ive been trying to get more into throwing on a wheel but I have been unsuccessful and I don’t like the feel of finish of the stone ware clay that I have available ( Im taking a high school class and just using what is available). My teacher hasn’t really helped or given any solid tips on how to throw and anything I have thrown I haven’t felt a connection with and doesn’t feel sincere to my style of art or the picture I have in my head but neither does hand building in the same way metal or wood does to me. I find clay very interesting and I quite enjoy it but I feel between my teacher and her odd unnecessarily overbearing requirements on her idea of pottery I cant fully express myself and don’t like it as much as I possibly could. I don’t know and I feel kind of lost with my art direction or journey.

Have you considered recycling the trimming using the dry method ? Grinding the leftover bone dry clay to a powder. This method is faster, but you need a dedicated grinding machine.

I'm no expert, but as a hobbyist I have been told to avoid working with clay when it's dry, due to the issue of silicosis.

Hi 👋 What cone did you fire the porcelain to?
@chrzzzzz
@chrzzzzz 2 года назад
Were the pyrometric cones more slumped than usual? I thought the last is meant to only slump a little, as it represents a temperature higher than your target one.
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 2 года назад
I just push them all over. As soon as come ten is flat I end the firing. You’re right of course! Really I should use cones 9, 10, 11 but this works so far with no disasters.

@@floriangadsby Cheers for the reply. I've been studying up on how to fire, as I've bought my first kiln, so great to hear other ways to approach things. You must have a bunch of various techniques you employ for simplicity, or speed, or quality. Would you ever put together a video about them?
@lorez201

I’m just curious about the composition of the different types of clay body you use. Am I right in assuming that porcelain clay body is pure kaolinite? Is that the same as China clay? Regarding the high-iron clay body you use more commonly, is it also pure kaolinite besides the iron oxide impurity? Or are there other minerals, clay and otherwise, present in it?

@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 2 года назад
It’s because the bottom front of the kiln, by the door where those pots are placed, always under fires a little bit, so glazed pots placed there never really reach the correct temperature. So instead I line the front with pots that need a second dose of heat/reduction, or those that need a tiny bit of crawling patched up.
