So glad I found you! I have a recently adopted greyhound mix. She’s smaller, like Star, about 25 lbs, rescued from Mexico and we’re beginning training. Her nails grow ridiculously fast so I bought the cordless pet dremel and will begin getting her used to it! She’s not an easy girl (yet)! She actually chews her dew claw so that tells me it might bother her.
I believe a how-to on using a Dremel on Dog Nails should mention heating and/or friction. If one hold the dremel stationary in co ntact with the nail for too long, the nail will heat up and actually burn the toe. The dog will become afraid and you'll have to take a step back to re-acclimate her to the grinder.
D'oh, that definitely would have been good to mention. I'm going to edit the video description to include that. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
I've found that the diamond bits don't get hot like the standard bits that come with it. They're on the more expensive side, but you don't have to replace them.
@@CuSidhe The Standard bits that come with my Dremel (Same Model as in Video) last probably eighteen months with my one Greyhound. (I used to breed/exhibit (English) Bulldogs and one standard bit lasted maybe a year with FIVE adults.) I also started my pups on the Dremel immediately - at maybe five weeks of age!
@@SaltiDawg2008 Okay? The standard bits still get hot, where the diamond bits do not. That was the point I was making. I use the diamond bits on my Borzoi, and they work better than the standard ones.
She now has a neighbor dog that she races up and down the backyard fence and it has bulked up her leg muscles, this is the best I have ever seen her look!
I have wanted to do this video and we are waiting on a foster that reacts excitedly so that we can record how we handle it. So far we haven't really had that.
My new girl is similar to Olive so I might try something like this when she gets older. At the moment she's 4 and fresh off the track. Will definitely try nail varnish though!
Great video! I have the Dremel brand shown in the video as well and it's good - better than the Boshel brand that's also on Amazon, which was quieter, but the power was too low and it took forever to do my Grey's nails. On the flipside, you have to be careful about the Dremel's power - I only use the low setting for mine. I also eased into using a grinder with my Grey by first just turning it on near him, not even grinding his nails, and giving him a small treat. I did this at least a few times before even starting the grinding so he would associate it with positive things (I did this with the vacuum as well.)
That is why we bought a multi use tool instead of one specifically for nails so it would have decent power. Thinking back a few years, we did the same with Olive by letting her hear the tool operating before using it on her nails.
I had one of those PediPaws battery powered nail trimmers once. It had no power for a Greyhound sized nail. The Dremnel definitely has the power, but noisier. And again, I always get the Greyhound wiggly, flying around leg of panic. I need to find a nail trimming assistant.
