I don't check comments on my videos much but I see so many nice comments I just want to Thank everyone , thanks You. AA0SP

My mother said she hiked Pike's Peak when she was pregnant with me, back in the late 1940s. I've never been back to CO since they moved East about 1949. now I finally got my ham ticket at 67 years old and you're showing mea lovely sight I've never seen before. Thank you. KC1ELZ

Good God is that what Colorado really looks like? You are blessed my friend. I lived in 10 states and traveled to another 30 in this country, but never made it to Colorado, nor seen views like that. I think this will be my next travel destination. Hats off to you my friend and 73. Thanks for sharing.

Lots of people complaining about the access road, probably have never been out of the city. I live in WA and we have probably thousands of miles of roads like that throughout the Cascades, some of them are even narrower and they take log trucks on them. Have to pay attention to signs when your out there. At that height i figured your jeep might be having some issues.

my favorite road in wa is the harts pass road, 20 miles, very narrow with steep drop-offs in places and the road ends at a lookout tower at 7440ft with a 600 gallon propane tank next to it. yep, full-sized propane trucks drove that road to refill that tank...

Amazing video! The first ham radio video I saw on RU-vid. I didn’t really know what a repeater was at the time but it looked cool. I’ve come a long way since then. Got my ticket a few years after watching this video and I’ve learned so much since then. Repeaters are now my primary interest in ham radio.

Nice repeater site & setup. We camp hosted in our RV the summer of 2013 at a USFS campground near Salida, CO. We had no cell coverage in the campground, had to walk 1/4 down the dirt service road to a rock outcropping. We were also in a shadow of a nearby 2M mountain repeater. When Sheila would go to town I could hear her on the repeater, but she could not hear my 5 watt signal back at the campground very well at all. It was a good test of our patience skills. I tried a directional cell ant with a 3-watt 3G cell amp mounted at 35 feet right at our campsite, but cell calls and 3G Internet were still hit and miss from our box canyon campground. We take communications for granted until we face real world challenges. My lessons learned were not to assume an eight mile signal path would be line of sight based on observations of a 2-dimentional map! Next would have been more power and a bigger 2M antenna at the campsite. 73, Dave - KU9L

Two Thoughts; 1. A SnowCat trip to your site in the winter must be a real thrill-a-minute event. 2. That 12,000 foot elevation really makes ya "puff". I worked at a 10,000 foot microwave site a few years ago (you had to climb/crawl the final 300 feet up a moderate hill) and I thought I was gonna die !! Nice Video - Thanks for sharing. I have read about some new resins that are sold today to help seal out moisture from damaged solar panels. You might look into it! Save a bunch of $$$ by not having to replace that panel. Nice views! Range on that site should not be a problem. I was accessing a LE repeater located on the Hancock Tower in Chicago while I was half way across Indiana on Rt.30! The rule of thumb is, the higher the repeater the less power is needed on the transmitter but that receiver better be hot as he**! Intermod is the enemy. Miss the 'old day' 20 years in Commercial COMMS in CMH area and semi retired in SV9 land.

Hi , HB&B thanks for the info.....your box is 2000..I was asking about the commercial Rohn shelters up there which are Seismic spec, very heavy, and built up to possibly survive an earthquake. Here our Rohn shelters sat on 24" re-enforced concrete pads and were also bolted down. A 10' x 16' shelter weighed close to 35,000 with radios and HVAC units. Figured a Helo in Winter, usually charge, $300 each flight up and down when I was working.

Great video, thanks for sharing! I love the Springs. When I went up to the top of Pikes Peaks back in 2009 I hadn't had my HAM license yet so I didn't know to look for antennas and repeaters yet. Now that I am a HAM, I've been so interested in repeater set ups and I really appreciated the "tour" you gave in this vid. So behind a gate, no vehicles but ones that can. Scary to get there, bit close to the edge. So main communications up there so power, why dont they let you have an outdoor armored cable to your storgae box where the stuff is. Mains powered, seems a bit mean when must be power up there. daniel G7TRV

If I worked 40M up on this hill just out of the jeep on a wire dipole, on that hill away from the site there, pretty sure it'd be outrageous. Couldn't imagine a rotatable dipole up here on 40 @ legal limit. But the receive would awesome it'd be hard to leave.You'd have dreams about it later but, a shot of lightning, you'd be outta there so quick. But if I got up often, I'd have something 20 or 40 I could tap into for a while just sayin. You could always build a bunk up over the batteries there for overnight qrp? What a secret propagation shack you've got there. And power bank to boot. Nice. I'd have to work some hf up there I mean really man. Brah. Come on brah. Srsly brah omg 1K and a h/w dipole on 40 brah. I spent 25 yrs with a major East Coast police dept as a radio tech-electrician. I built 911 call centers and several tower sites. We ran VHF for 30 years and in 99 went 800 Trunked, Moto Type II Smartzone. So, my question is, how did you get that Rohn shelter up there ? I know that baby must weigh about 50,000 pounds being all concrete and steel. Hate to make site visit in Winter or worse need a part from the shop ! Or worse, get hurt up there. I'd "carry" working up there alone, you bet !
@HotBrassandBullets
@HotBrassandBullets 8 лет назад
+LMHS63 The box weighs about 2000 lbs, no concrete, I put an axel under it and pulled it up there. Took two days , had to go real slow and still I bent the axel. That was 19 years ago. Can't get up there in the winter, unless you take a helicopter .

The work involved in setting up this repeater, and keeping it working is fantastic. The hardest thing we do here in Tennessee is climb a water tower or commercial tower every now and then. We don't get much more than 500 ft HAAT. Our local UHF repeater is at 100 ft HAAT about 330 ft ASL.

@SteveHartmanVideos 9 лет назад
wow, that's a nice setup. what kind of coverage do you get? is your link radio pointed to your house so you can control it? does that prevent you from having to transmit the DTMF tones over the repeater? can you tell me, how did you get permission to set this up? did you get permission from the town to have it there for so long? also, how many watts do you use, i'm guessing around 100watts?
@HotBrassandBullets
@HotBrassandBullets 9 лет назад
Coverage varies with terrain but typically 50 to 150 miles. This is a 2 meter repeater on 147.180 so control is on 440 mhz. Output to the antenna is about 15 watts depending on battery voltage. Getting permission to have the repeater up there was not easy, I had to deal with the Forestry Service.

Hot Brass and Bullets thanks for the reply, i have to say, this just goes to show how height and terrain are so much MORE important than power output. I'm working on building my own GMRS repeater for around my neighborhood to use with my kids, and I'm having a lot of fun learning about everything. I'm looking at the terrain with fresh eyes around my town... I've always been interested in off grid comms and long range walkie talkies as a kid, and I finally got my ham and gmrs licenses a few months ago.

Isn't it better to have a separate lead acid battery compartment for the batteries away from all of your electronics and hardware to prevent corrosion due to hydrogen gases from the batteries?
