Tripods… the very word makes some photographers turn purple and clutch their beads. But why? What’s so divisive about a three legged stick?
Do you use a tripod? Do you love it or loath it?
Today, I look at some reasons people hate them, and some reasons to love them.
oh, and I get very, very, wet.

No gear was hurt making this video, and all gear used is mine, bought at full retail with my own money.

Thanks for taking us along. Tripods - of course, depending on the situation and the use case. I won't hesitate to use a sandbag instead for support or a hat or IBIS, either.

What a cool setting! I also shoot for me, not for clients. One of the many advantages of MFT format is that tripods are only needed for "special case" situations, like certain macros and long exposures. I'm not a fan of the latter, as I've seen way too many and some are cliché. I much prefer shorter exposures (like some of yours) that capture the beauty of the surf rather than suppressing it. I rarely carry a 'pod, as with 8 stops of IBIS on my Lumix G9M2 (6.5 on the G1 "I"), I can shoot my Leica 100-400 at it's full effective FL of 800mm hand-held down to around 1/10s (much longer for shorter lenses) and, in the those very rare cases where more than 25MP (or even 20) might deliver a discernible difference in an image, I can shoot up to 100MP hand-held as well. I bought my Manfrotto BeFree GT X-Pro Carbon because its 90° pivoting arm enables me to position the camera in any position (plus it fits in my Lowepro ProTactic 450), but it stays home 95+% of the time. I understand that need some feel to slow down the process, but in my experience, more often than not, thought is the enemy of art--you need to "feel" the shot and that doesn't take a lot of pondering... It's like musical improv--the best solos aren't pre-planned.

Nice spot and images. 🙂👍 As for tripods... I only use them for long exposures (such as for capturing movement, timelapse, and astrophotography). I handhold everything else these days.

Honestly I'm not getting the question. Tripods are like scissors, I'm not picking them up for the heck of it, but because I want to do something that requires using them.

I stopped watching at "figure it out for yourself". Just kidding. But, that is the best advice I've ever heard and I've been a photographer over 40 years. It does seem like most photography videos tell people what camera to get, what lenses to get, what tripod to buy, etc, etc, etc. A beginning photographer would do well to buy a camera, a lens, and a memory card and start shooting. If you get to the point where the camera, lens, or card is limiting what you want to do, then buy a different camera, lens, or card. Or whatever accessories are needed. Yes, it's that simple. Now go photograph something.

Interesting place, wonder if there's any good fishing there 🤔 Tripods are tools, some jobs you need them, some jobs you don't. That salt water is nasty stuff, might want to rinse your gear off with fresh water.

Tripods are the reason I do not have to pay extra for lenses with IBIS as a landscape photographer. That way I can gladly pick up a second hand £300 Canon F4L instead of a €1500 f2.8 L IS

I love the way a tripod slows everything down and makes it better ... 🦘
