I had to tear down my 75 Gold Wing once. To remove heads remove six 12 or 14mm bolts ( I can't remember which size it was) and one 10mm bolt. Get 2x6 one foot long place on intake area of the head and then hit with 10 pound sledge hammer while a friend puts hands under head to catch it when it finally comes off. Oh yea, friends eyes will get bigger and bigger with each strike of the hammer. No I'm nor kidding. Honda used a glue on this heads that set when the engine came up to operating temperature . The only way to get them off was with brute force, so I know how you felt when removing the crank. Sometimes you just have to wonder what the hell engineers are thinking when they design something.

The red stuff you refer to inside the case. I can only go by what I was told and it may not be what you see but interesting anyway.I spoke to an old triumph engineer years ago, probably since died. he was on a team that went to America to find a problem with seized engines in he 70's they scratched their heads for some time as they found sand in the oil. even after flushing and fresh fills it still kept appearing. it was found the sand was from the casting itself. triumph Meriden started to use a new cleaning system we know as ultrasonic cleaning. they used this to clean castings after machining, but, it didn't clean the sand out of the casting that was stuck in. after running the engine it crept out to the oil. they didn't want to replace all engines so painted the inside of the case to seal the sand in so it didn't contaminate the oil. this is the first time I've heard of anyone mention it. I only heard this from one ex engineer so can only go on what he said. but an interesting story either way.

Interesting anecdote there, but here its more likely it got water into it and we're seeing some oxidation from the oil/water as it has emulsified. See it quite commonly in gearboxes.
