Why doesn't anyone talk about Triumph more? They were F'ing fantastic. In his prime there are very few rock stars who could match his voice live. Amazing! How do Canadian bands get so much sound with a trio?
+Chris J These guys, Rush, Max Webster, and so many other great Canadian bands are from my town. I only recently found out how close my house is to where Geddy Lee of Rush lived, and where Alex Lifeson's old high school is. My kids may go to that same high school since it's the closest one to our house. I digress. So much talent! Must be something in the drinking water?
Rik Emmett left Triumph in 1988 to pursue a solo career. His first solo album, Absolutely, was released in 1990 and became a moderate hit across the United States and Canada thanks to the hits "When a Heart Breaks," "Big Lie" and "Saved by Love". He is also a writer for Guitar Player magazine and teaches song-writing and music business at Humber College in Toronto.
I saw them on Houston in 1985. First concert since getting sober at 25. Kinda freaked out and didn't appreciate their genius and talent . Strobes freaked me out. It was a whole new world.!
Do yourself a favor, pull these guys up on your streaming service and take a road trip listening to them. They have a good collection of great hard rock songs. Although at the time, I don’t think people considered them really heavy rock. I didn’t.

It's the same old story all over again You turn a lover into just another friend I wanna love you, I wanna make you mine Won't you lay it on the line I'm tired of playin' your foolish games I'm tired of all your lies makin' me insane I don't ask for much, truth will do just fine Won't you lay it on the line Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Don't waste my time You got no right to make me wait Better talk, girl, before it gets too late I never ever thought you could be so unkind Won't you lay it on the line? Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Don't waste my time You know I love you (you know I love you), you know it's true (you know it's true) It's up to you, girl, now what have I got to do? Don't hold me up, girl, don't waste my precious time Won't you lay it on the line? Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Don't hold me up, girl Lay it on the line Yeah, yeah Lay it on the line Lay it on the line, girl Lay it on the line Oh, don't hold me up Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Lay it on the line Lay it on the line
A three peace band people I will challenge anyone to produce this level of sound one of the greatest band's ever with great messages in their music amazing talent rock on
Look at the masses of people, there’s not of bands these days that can draw that many of people! They must of been doing something right, like play kick ass music 🎵
Well, that was at the US Festival (in which I attended) San Bernardino 1983 Van Halen headlined. Ozzy, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Quiet Riot, and Triumph. Hot as hell. Triumph and Priest was the best made it look easy. Rik Emmit a monster!. Motley sucked!! Terrible!!!!Ozzy was good. Quiet Riot was alright. Van Halen, everybody was there to see them. They had a slow start and then got better as it went on. Wasn’t their best show. Massive stage!
@@shawnstarks1743 1983 "Hot as hell."? You mean like 100 degrees & humid? Cuz, MSNBC tells me in the 70's 80's & 90's there was no GLOBAL WARMING. In fact, in the 70's an ICE AGE was coming.
Saw Triumph a couple times in my teen years, I always thought Rik Emmet was a vastly underrated guitar player. He was always spot on live and his vocals were always awesome!! Great quality on the video for '83!!
Had to look at this clip again today as my 17 year old came in and said he heard this great song on the radio, something about "lay it on the line" and he screeched it out and it took me back to 83 and the heat and madness of the US festival. I was in the navy in Long Beach and went to all three days and I have to say Triumph were one of the best of the entire session, including the 82 shows. What a great band, 3 rockin Canucks!!!! Great times, great memories.....
I am 53 years old and was at many rock/metal concerts in the day, but if I ever can go back in time I would want be there, just an incredible vibe, with a lot of great bands/music, triumph, rick emit are fantastic...
Another awesome three piece band from Canada, with one of the best albums ever recorded. They really put on great shows, all 4 times I was lucky enough to see them. Thanks for posting.
James Morrison Not using Wiki. I am using my own brain, and memory. I was a junior in HS, in '83, and designed a really cool computer program, when then concert was first announced. And, Triumph was always scheduled to play Heavy Metal Sunday. Motley was supposed to open the day, but when Joe Walsh got moved to Monday, they moved Motley to 2nd, and had QR open the show. For the 3rd time, you are wrong.
I was there, Triumph was always scheduled to play, not a last minute replacement. You may be thinking of one of the other days, obviously John Cougar wouldn't have been scheduled for heavy metal day.
Cynthia LeVeque , it was worth it. I came down from Oregon to watch it. I was there for Van Halen but god they were awful that night. These guys blew it off the charts. I remember everyone around me were saying, "These dudes don't belong here". After their set and especially when Rik did that mind blowing solo during Rock and Roll Machine, the same people were going nuts. Best band of that day hands down!
I agree govrom12. David Lee Roth was a joke. I came down from Eugene, OR for the concert. So glad I did!!! I loved the Scorps and Judas Priest too from that day. I was at all 3 days.
I was there at the US festival in1983. "Heavy metal Sunday". what a day and what a show!!!! Great to see these videos. Close my eyes and I am 21 again. But not suffering in the heat this time!
Awesome song -- the song you sing out loud in your car! And play the drums with your hands..... Those 3-man bands from Canada are pretty impressive. Count it - Triumph had 18 gold and 9 platinum albums during the 70s and 80s. Rush has 24 gold, 14 platinum, and 3 multi platinum albums. Canada - not just for hockey players anymore.
In my view, you can only achieve greatness as a band if you can rock your songs live. Triumph, the whole trio, displays some high-level showmanship in this one - no doubts there! Awesome vid! Rock on! \m/ \m/
I drove a 1968 cadillac from san diego..a buck a gallon for gas ..which was a lot for a guy in the navy making 125 bucks a week as an E-2...I think the tickets were like 12-15 bucks...great memories little money...not again in this lifetime..lol
Rik Emmett is one of the greatest guitar players that ever picked up an axe. And this is from somebody who grew up in Dallas TX. and listened to southern rock all my life.
I passed out earlier and when I awoke this song was running around my brain. Funny thing is, I would bet that I have not heard this song in over ten years. lol Thank you. That was awesome!!!
Was there. They were great - or so my friend Bobby said. I was so hot and tired I slept through their entire set. Glad I can now see the video and verify.
I saw Triumph in 1987( or was it '88?)..anyway, they were freakin' AWESOME ! And this is so nice to see, so many years later, one of my all time favorites, TRIUMPH!!! Thanks for sharing!
