Hello Chris- Thanks for this video, and the heads up regarding launching the cup across the garage! Seeing this made use prepare for the worst and it really did help us from killing ourselves! You have earned your badge today!

There's! That was quite surprising and a great lesson learned!

Combo old shop/new shop footage! Finally received my caliper kits after 3 months backorder.

Yup. If you watch the video closely, you can tell that I jumped, too!

Nice work. Roadster factory is great at making things right. It's always scary when something goes shooting across the garage. The hammer and tape trick is neat, but I prefer to just tub the edge with something like a stick or screwdriver. Hate to mess up that sealing surface.

@roundtailrestoration 3 года назад
Yes, that was scary. I agree with you on the tape, but those areas really aren't sealing surfaces, just the o-ring area. I bet a mallet would work, too.

Thanks for explaining all that. I could have sworn that the maintenance manual says never ever ever EVER split the calipers, but hey, if you can get the o-rings, it doesn't seem too difficult to. When I took one of mine off I used the compressed air trick, but only one came out... so I resorted to a blunt object to dewedge the second cylinder. Not sure if I'll ever rebuild them or just replace, but your video gave me inspiration/hope that I can rebuild! Thanks.

Hi David. It probably does say that somewhere. I know it is discouraged on the forums because of the probability of leaks. Not quite sure why...it's just an O-ring. As long as the brakes haven't been overheated and the calipers warped (I'd find that hard to believe that would happen) I think it's fine. The biggest reason I did it was because I couldn't get inside the piston chambers to make sure they were clean and undamaged.

Excellent content as normal. I had the same problem with both my callipers but couldn’t get the pistons out so had to pay £160.00 for two new ones, and would you believe Rimmers told me they were waiting for stock from America!
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 3 года назад
Ha! That's funny. Surprised that they make them over here...wonder if it was a warehouse or something.

@@roundtailrestoration they said due to COVID they were having problems obtaining stock so had gone to America for them. I’m not sure if that was a one off or not though. Unfortunately I had already purchased the full repair kits to rebuild them before I took them off the car so I have them spare now. Never mind I’m sure we’ve all done that before.

I can't tell you how many parts I have that I ordered just in case. One of these days I'll use them...that's what I keep telling myself. Of course, you'll use those calipers...the rebuild kits...??

Hi Chris, Can I referance your videos in mine? Thanks for posting this, I just went to bleed the brakes on my Mk2 after refurbing the rears and found the fronts though working were pretty much seized. Anyway, after an afternoon following your instruction I was able to get them working again so I can move on while I wait for parts for a permanent fix. Anyway, after some other frustrations I didn't bother filming the process but I'd like to reference your video as a good guide for calliper repair when I put together mine on refurbishing the drums, if that's ok?
