I've developed a rhythmic knocking while driving the car, coming from the differential area. I took the propshaft apart to discover an overly-complicated design and missing rollers. It didn't fix my problem, but at least it's put back together properly.

Was a beautiful day for a cruise, that's for sure. Nice blue sky.

Yes, it was a nice day. Good weekend on tap here, too, so I'll hopefully get her out again.

Our TR's are always a journey. That's why we sometimes have a love/hate relationship. Thanks Chris! Be good. Remain safe. Wishing you a Deluxe weekend!

Thanks, Matthew. Love/hate for sure. Hopefully get some drive time in this weekend as the weather looks great.

@roundtailrestoration we are looking forward to moving to the east coast. We had to postpone our move for family reasons. We are actively pursuing property now. I freed up some $ recently. Our plan now is to purchase and try to make the move less stressful. I have a business, cars, and motorcycles to move. We will sell this home once we are settled back east. Enjoy the weekend Chris

Housing market is horrible around me, Groton CT. Of course, we have Electric Boat, which is hiring like crazy, and home prices have skyrocketed with little inventory. I wish you luck!

This is all new to me. I'll check my propshaft to see if this is why I have a clonk sound when reversing and then going into 1st. Never boring to own a Triumph😆

You got that right. I'm not sure if there should be no play in the joint or not. But, you got to wonder why make it that complicated?!

Keep driving it as you say, if it gets worse you can look at other possible locations to try and solve the issue. Take care!

Hi Chris, Yes you shouldn't have any angular play on this sliding joint. This can lead to rise in vibration too. Another thing I do notice from the video is the engine seems to be running on three legs most of the time but I may be wrong.

That's unfortunate, but thank you. No, I'm not real happy with the way the motor is running. I did have the choke stuck open on me while I was filming, which I didn't figure out until I got back and tried to play with it, but even after that, she doesn't seem to have a lot of power. I mean, it's only a bit over 60hp, and I have never driven another Spitfire, but it doesn't seem as peppy as I think it should be. I'll do some more troubleshooting. Thanks!

Interesting bearing setup for sure. You've probably already looked at all 4 UJ's. Diff or trans internals? Or something as simple as a worn bushing or some other rubber piece? Just thinking out loud. 🤔
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 10 месяцев назад
Yes, all of the UJs appear fine. Definitely coming from the back, so diff area. As I was editing the video, I noticed the scratched paint on the propshaft, in a circular pattern. Didn't dawn on me until then that I might have it rubbing against something under there - ebrake linkage or something. Going to get back under it and take a look. Thanks, Hazen!

you say the UJ are fine. Did you check that the cross is not moving inside the cups....wold move side to side as it rotates. not from worn bearings...but because the yoke is srpead out a bit. I had this on my car on one of the axles. I made a shim from a soda can and placed it b/w the cup and the clip that holds it in. (that's how little it needed to stop the knock) got the idea from someone else on the TE forums...the correct way would to fix in my case, would be to remove axle shaft and put the yoke in a press, and squeeze the yoke to the correct distance.

This’d be my suspicion too given the noise happens at drive time. You can also buy thicker circlips to take up this play (though mine are also done with beer can!) Propshaft I would’ve expected to clunk on direction change but not while driving.

Thanks, guys. I didn't check that type of play out specifically. That'll be a good next step...just wish the darn thing didn't require taking apart the interior to remove!

Thanks for sharing. Crazy design for sure. Do new prop shafts come splined?
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 10 месяцев назад
Thanks. I can only assume the new prop shafts are splined. Just seems way to complicated to retain - costs too much to produce these days. Thanks!

Anyone can drive a Honda…. …… but not anyone can drive a Spit! 😊
@roundtailrestoration

Got that right...and sometimes not anyone wants to! But, I guess it's to be expected after a first restoration to have some kinks to work out. Thanks, Larry!

If it never went wrong then it would be Toyota and it would be boring, like a Toyota.
