I try my hand at some zinc plating using the Caswell Copy-Cad kit. Not great the first time, but not horrible. Some practice and I should get the hang of it so I can re-use my original, higher quality fastener hardware as well as zinc-plate other parts (like brake calipers).

Nice to see you doing plating. Best of luck getting the kinks worked out.

Thanks, Tom. I tried it again yesterday and it was better that time around. It is fun to watch it happen!

I did the same on my door latches on my wagoneer. I had the same issue in some areas had no plating. I ended up turning my subjects every once in a while so no areas would be exposed to "shadows". That seemed to work well. It's one of my earlier videos. Good stuff! Keep cranking!

Thanks, I'll check it out. I'd like to do larger pieces too, eventually, like you. Figure I'll start with the small stuff and go from there.

Thanks, Andy. Does seem like a low-tolerance endeavor. But, having a quality kit, I hope, will help make it easier in the long run. Thanks!

That is a pretty complex process compared to what I was going to attempt. I still might give it a shot just for yucks on some old parts. Neat video!

It's a pain in the ass! But, I think it will pay dividends in the long run once I get my process dialed in.

That air-pump is most likely non-submersible. They are designed to have a plastic tube attached that also connects to an airstone on the other end. The airstone bubbles air up through your plating solutoion to agitate mixture.

I mis-spoke in the video, it is a water pump. And I verified the directions that you can submerge it. I did invest in a slightly better, but still cheap, water circulator for aquariums. We'll see how that one works. Thanks for watching!

Good stuff Chris. Thanks for showing. Not if this is the issue, but my understanding is electroplating basically line-of-sight, from the anode to the cathode. If there is no direct line, it probably won't plate there. Do you need more anodes around the perimeter?

Yup, it's something I've looked at. I've taken to moving the stuff around every few minutes and that seems to help. Still don't have it down yet, though.

My experience is up the amperage and voltage. The voltage may not increase but you can up the amperage.

Okay, I'll give that a shot. I'm sure there'll be a good learning curve and experience to be gained. Thanks, Alan!

showing us a video of a possible zinc-plating failure, without the follow-up as to why, feels like a waste of my time. Is it left to me to use this as a learning tool? It may be, learning what to watch and not watch, I guess. Best of luck and well wishes on your project(s). Perhaps, if the title were something like "early attempts at zinc plating, failure?"

You make a very good point. It's well taken. I'll take action on that. Thank you for watching and your well wishes (and plating is still kicking my butt)!

I've updated the thumbnail and title. I left the description because it stated that I was having issues. Thank you for your feedback. I detest click-bait and this was not an attempt at that. I still don't know why I'm not doing so hot at the plating (still), so I couldn't answer that question then or now. But, again, your point was well-taken and appreciated.
