My TR4A has overdrive and the weight. I have read that these were to damp out resonance at above 3000rpm. with a number of entries in various forums suggesting that they were fitted mid way through TR4 production and on into the 4A. However, I have not seen the part referenced in my original Stanpart TR4/4A workshop manual and they seem to be somewhat mysterious objects. When I was re-building my car I found that the hole through the strap part had worn and the weight was loose. I didn't like the idea of this heavy lump falling off at speed, so I repaired the hole and made sure all was very secure on re-assembly. Would love to read a definitive answer if anyone has it.
Hi Robin. In the spare parts catalog, I found part number 132604, Weight and Bush Assy, Vibration Damper, with several other parts associated with it. There's no picture of it and it says it's only from gearbox numbers CT17815 to CT35719. My OD gearbox is well beyond that, but may have been put on an earlier TR4. My gearbox that came with the car is post-35719, so it would not have had it. Might that be it?
