Good simple description, but I think you may have missed mentioning that the slot in the top of the distributor drive gear is not on the true diameter, but off-set to one side, and I believe that the slot should be off-set to the front of the engine (so broader segment is on the rear) as you have it. If not followed the ignition will be 180 degrees out, but can be compensated for by changing the position of the individual plug leads.

I didn't notice that. The workshop manual didn't say anything about that. I'll check it out next time I'm at the garage. Thanks!

Chis, this may not be mentioned clearly in the section of the manual describing the fitting of the distributor gear, but it can be inferred from the section on ignition timing. This says that the rotor arm must point to number 1 cylinder at TDC on the start of the number 1 firing stroke. This can only be achieved if the gear is in the correct position as above

@@roundtailrestoration No, what you said and how you actually fitted it is correct, but if you look at the slot, you will see that it is offset slightly, as is the matching tab on the end of the distributer. My point is that it is easy to miss the off-set and then install the gear to be pointing at the tube, but be 180 degrees out in the ignition timing. So need to make sure that the slot is offset to the general direction of the front, (wider segment to the rear)
