We are now well into December and the cold days of winter, and Danny has asked me if I can sort out his diff on his #TriumphTR6 Danny being Danny never does things by halves and only ever buys the best things he can buy for his car. His #differential has been making a whining noise for a little while now, it's most likely the bearing on the way out; so he has supplied me with a newly recondition diff from #MossEurope to fit to his car

Impressed you did that alone, outside and without a ramp! I’ve done it but in my friends Trade Garage. I would prefer no music and more info on size bolts, spanner’s, gear oil etc. But yet another helpful video, thanks Steve.

Yeah, all done by myself alone on the floor in the depths of winter. The way I see it is, you just gotta make the best out of what you have and crack on with what needs doing 👍

Great video Steve, I'm guessing a lot of owners will eventually need to do this job. I've helped a friend remove his, so I'm impressed how you did it alone just on an albeit impressive sized trolly jack. My diff leaks and has quite a bit of back lash so it'll need to do this sometime. That '6 looks so sweet and sounds awesome too, I took mine out with the roof down on Christmas day and with a similar big bore phoenix stainless exhaust sounded so good 👍.

That jack is a real donkey of a tool, it's one of the first tools I brought some 15 years ago. It's been used, abused, repaired, and just keeps going on and on Dannys TR6 for some reason has always been a loud beast with a 6-1 phoenix exhaust, overhead Revington throttle linkage, it's just a monster. I was toying at going out in the Spitfire Christmas day, but it never happened. I made up for it today with a short drive in the MGB 👍

Hi Steve. You did well to manage that task in not the most ideal working conditions. So Dave's got a whining diff' ? I bet it hasn't whined for as loud and long as my Mrs. !😂😂😂 I thought the exhaust came off pretty well , l had to use an air chisel on my system even though it looked pretty recent ( well it did 10years ago!) . Did the diff' washers and nylocs come with the fitting kit ? Great job and l'm sure Dave appreciated your input. And have you heard that the "Flying Legends Air show " has left Duxford and moving to Sywell ? Well , enjoy the rest of Christmas and lets all look foward to a positive 2021 . Take care and stay safe.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
I'd love an air chisel, but I try to keep the noise down with the neighbors. The diff didn't come with new washers etc, but they were included with the SuperPro bushes. As for Flying Legends, I can't wait for that 👍

Cheers Tush, yeah there uprated ones from SC Parts. I've seen many uprated driveshafts over the years, but the ones made by SC Parts (Jaguar specialists) aren't the cheapest but I'd say are best on the market. I fitted them many years ago to Dannys TR6, looking back now, I wish I did a video on them, but it was before my YouTubing days 👍

I would never put the car on axel stands at an angle like that....weight and gravity is powerful....I would put all four axel stands at the same height as it really is too dangerous....roads sometimes are not that great either and we can get weak spots in them so again be weary of this also. I always at least shove my wheels in under the car as a life saver as all the other things can flatten down as they fall. Well done to you for having a go like that....my body is off the chassis and i have just done seals on my one and that was hard enough. I love the choice of colors as a mechanic....like what's cooking in the kitchen. Well done.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Cheers Noreen, I hear your concerns, but please don't worry too much about me, I do mechanics for a living. However I know where your coming from, it's easy to make a mistake with a jacked up car and your a pancake. I do usually throw a couple of wheels underneath the car, as like you say, it can be a life safer. That's great to hear your making good progress with your car. I've had the body off the chassis on my own TR6 and replace the chassis with a CTM one. Best thing I ever did to the car, it made it handle so much better. All the Best Steve 👍

My diff seized on me without warning, 'luckily' we were only doing about 25mph on a local A road, but still ended up across both lanes! I was working in a garage at the time so had the luxury of a lift. The job was a doddle (secondhand unit) but we stripped it to see what caused it. Previous owner had filled the diff with a mixture of grease and oil. I kid you not....... Grease! Pinion bearing had welded itself together. Amazingly there was no noise at all prior to it locking up! Nice work there though Steve, not easy on your back on the deck!
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Grease!! That's a new one to me, I bet the previous owner packed it with grease so that it would keep the worn out diff noise silent, long enough to sell the car to the next owner. Unfortunately being yourself, but what a cowboy thing to do, that could of ending up in a serious accident, lucky like you said you wasn't going fast when it welded itself up 👍
@tomcollier2444
@tomcollier2444 3 года назад
@@SteveDentonClassics About a half a pint of grease in the diff housing, presumably to 'take up a bit of slack'! It got better tho but! When we came to swap the diff, someone previously had sheered off a diff mount. They'd drilled and tapped the shaft where the threads had snapped off and fitted a 1/4 bolt!!!! A tricky repair putting that one right,lol!
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
I bet, seems like you had your work cut out with that one! It's a know weak spot with the TR's the diff mounts sheering, however after many conversations with you Tom, I'm pretty sure your aware of this. Generally we tend to box them in those days, it's something I forgot to mention in the video, but in my defense it was pretty cold and I just wanted to get it all done before it got dark 👍
@tomcollier2444
@tomcollier2444 3 года назад
@@SteveDentonClassics Mine wasn't the usual fractured diff mount. It had been snapped off at the threaded portion, seized on nut forced and sheered the mount by cak handed previous owner. They drilled into the stub of the mount and fitted a 1/4 bolt. I'm amazed it held being as I used to thrash the car pretty much everywhere I went. I cut a mortice in the remains of the mount and a tenon in a new threaded section, then welded down and around the joint. As you say though, in general the diff mounts tear out, fatigue due to repetitive torque twisting as I understand it. Other than the diff, the usual clutch fork pin naughtiness, and a couple of vertical links and trunnions the car was super reliable,. No issues whatsoever with Lucas injection, believe it or not!!....................... Oh, and a rear wheel bearing?!?!?!?! Now that was a stinker to get off!!! Roll on 2021, a better year with any luck!!! All the best, Steve.

When you jacked car , did you place jack in area in front of diff. Sometimes referred as t shirt area. I was told to jack by shock mounts. The way you placed jack was easier. I appreciate your videos
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Cheers John, this is good question, and to start with, never jack a TR on the T Shirt panel, this panel has as lot of stress for the rear suspension going through it. As for jacking up a TR4A 5 or 6, from the rear, then jacking up the car on the diff is perfectly safe to do, and is the way I jack them up. Some people will tell you this is not right as it can crack the diff mounts, let me tell you this is nonsense, and an old wife's tail. Diff mounts are a known weak spot on TRs but its not from jacking them up. It's from the torque coming down the propshaft and out the driveshafts, causing a twisting action on the diff mounts that causing them to shear. Those days we tend to box in the diff mounts to stop this from happening. So long story short your perfectly fine to jack a TR on the bottom of the diff. As for the placement of the axle stands, if you put them on part of the chassis between where the rear trailing arms bolt onto, then that will be just fine, as that's where the weight of the car is designed to go through. Hope this helps, cheers Steve 👍

Yes and no. It’s one of them. If your diff hangers are in good shape and have been boxed in, there should be no issue. But if they are 50 years old and are still standard, then it’s food for thought to fit standard rubber 👍
