Triumph Trident 660 to Speed Twin 1200 - right move?

I swapped my 2021 Trident for a 2022 Speed Twin, but was it the right thing to do? Using my friend's Trident, I reminisce about the bike I gave up and consider the plus points of the Speed Twin. It's not as clear cut as you might think.

High quality video as usual with really insightful balanced content - thanks. I'm 3 months into my Trident ownership in Australia and really enjoying it's comfort and performance as a new rider. I personally like the street twin, admittedly it is in a different performance league from the Speed, but it does have similarly accessible levels of instantaneous torque, with great sound and an appealing price tag. Keep up the great content.
@RocketMan_Moto
@RocketMan_Moto 2 года назад
Thank you, Paul. The Street Twin is a lovely bike and I would have one over the T120, but it's just a little too 'soft' for me. I've heard that you can only get the restricted 48hp version of the Trident in Australia, is that right?
@paulb6112
@paulb6112 2 года назад
@@RocketMan_Moto Yes, the Trident is only available in restricted form in Australia...but it is slightly different in its level of restriction compared to UK A2. The Aus version is 39.5kw approx 54hp, with a similar torque profile to the unrestricted bike. I guess Triumph Australia are keen to get riders upgrading their Tridents to something else in the range after a year or so. De- restriction is not an option in Aus.

I hadn't watched your reviews before. Great style and content. I've ridden the Trident and was really impressed with it. Can't really get excited about the looks of the Speed twin and like you had wondered whether the much higher price than the Trident, was justified. Looking forward to test riding the Tiger 660 as a possible tourer, as I like light bikes, getting on a bit, but still like to give it the beans. My ktm 790 gives me all the fun, but maybe ready to have slightly more relaxed bike for touring. Could be bye bye to the 955i daytona 🤔🤔.

Both great bikes. I bought a Trident 3 months ago. I love riding it. I was out of biking for about 5 years after having owned various 'rice rockets'. But aging knees meant I needed more leg room and the Trident ticked the boxes for looks, comfort and price. I've addressed a few niggles I had like the cheap suspension, that awful rear number plate mount and the seat cover. Sahara seats in India do a great seat cover fitted in 5 mins to give a real premium look. Shock factory rear and Maxton fork internals sorted the ride quality out and a modified tail tidy for a KTM DUKE 390 gave the rear a more traditional look. The bikes a keeper and I get so many comments of admiration. The one thing I would change is to swap these Irish lanes for warm dry Mediterranean tarmac. Enjoy

The Trident / Tiger 660 may be what I am looking but I don't want to be disappointed in the low end grunt that the 955 provided along with hearing the deep throaty roar when doing roll ons in higher gears.

I adore my Trident and I think next spring/summer (the riding season is done here) when hopefully some more entertaining exhaust/filter/tunes come out it'll be highly entertaining, not that it isn't already. Then I might dive into the nuts-and-bolts upgrading of the brakes/suspension, etc, or I'll move onto something else, who knows. At the moment, I love the way the Trident looks, and I'd take it over the "looks" of the street/speed triple any day, even though those bike have a lot of the upgrades that I'm looking for on the Trident. As is said, motorcycles are as much a purchase of the heart as they are of the head, and right now, my head and heart are captivated by my Trident. :)

Most excellent insights. From the video, you can tell the Trident is more nimble (could be the rider). The white is the best paint scheme on the Trident. Totally understand your thinking Mr Rocket, taste's change with time. 2009 I traded a ZX-6R for a more sensible Street Triple, health issues kept me off the bike for 2+ years. Considered a T-Max or giving up, Recent improvements in health has me looking at a Tiger as Streety is too much temptation to hoon about with damaged hands.

So last year I purchased my Triumph Tiger900 RallyPro and for a mature rider of only 5”6” some would certainly question my decision making, especially if you add to the mix that I only returned to motorbikes 6 months earlier after 37 years without one. I think the point that you make about buying with your heart and head is just about right, as I think all honest bikers would agree. I loved the look of the RallyPro (my first bike back was a CRF250Rally- which then got stolen), however I also took the opportunity to test ride a street triple and a speed master. The street triple I knew was not for me within 5 minutes from the dealer, it just felt like I was set up to go over the bars any minute and I just kept telling myself “your not in your 20’s”, the Speedmaster was a lovely ride, even though it was forward pegs (I would need a mid set) and it came a thunderingly close 2nd to the Tiger. I knew I was going to take the bike out to Europe with me so needed to be comfortable over long distance (something that was lacking in the CRF -oooh!), I also wanted the facility to go off-road - when my skill level increases, to this end the speedmaster was not suitable. In reality we all need a couple of bikes, a nice bopping around town on (speed master or speed twin), a comfortable long distance touring bike (in my case the Tiger) and a small capacity off-roader (XT350 from back in the day or maybe Triumphs new project 😉). The Algarve looks absolutely gorgeous to ride in, maybe I need to relocate too 😂 Ian Back on Two Wheels

I've got a 2019 Speed Twin, I had a Street Triple 660S (derestricted to 94 BHP) which got swapped in for a Speed Triple 1050 RS. I've also had a go on a Trident 660. I guess I like them all in their own way. I do like a bucket load of torque, makes my crappy gear changes "acceptable". That's what always let me down on the 660 Street Triple. Wrong gear selected, and it didn't pull that well. I never have that issue with the Speed Twin or Speed Triple. But then the Street Triple 660 was so light and flickable, and I could wring the throttle without anything too bad happening. It was a lot of fun. I can't wring the throttle of the Speed Triple, it scares the life out of me ! As for the noise well the speed twin is awesome, but then so is the meaty triple sound of the Speed Triple RS with it's Arrow cans. The 660 Street Triple sounded a lot "weedier". My test ride on the Trident, I was impressed. It was very unintimidating, and easy to ride and a lot of fun, but I was glad when I got back on my Speed Triple for the ride home. So yeah, I'm a bit like you , I just can decide what one is best. If only I could have a garage of 20 different bikes , and enough time to ride them all ... I'm still yet to get a go on the new Speed Triple 1200 , I have the feeling it could be an expensive test ride. The lightness of and flickability maybe of the Street Triple, but with the low down torque of my 1050 Speed Triple, with an even more nutty top end. I just can't afford the upgrade fee, speeding tickets or worse !

I've heard the trident only has half it's injectors enabled under 5k RPMs. I've seen people flash the ECU to enable it at all RPMs and have heard that makes a world of a difference. I have the trident and have yet to do this but did notice if you turn on rain mode, it seems it keeps the injectors off after 5k, it has very predictably the same pull even after 5k RPM but when rain mode is off you can start to feel it pull after 5k pretty distinctly. I hope triumph pushes out an update that includes a sport mode that enables all injectors under 5k so i don't have to flash my ECU for a more snappy bike.

I recently had the chance to ride quite a few Triumphs back to back. I enjoyed the Trident but the Speed Twin was a revelation. I preferred the riding position of the Trident. The easy motor and overall fun of the Speed Twin were bliss. If I were to buy a motorcycle today, it would be the Speed Twin. What I would love Triumph to offer is a bigger Trident using the larger triple offered in the Tiger. With better suspension and a less frantic motor, that motorcycle would be brilliant. In essence, I want a Speed Trident. A motorcycle with a relaxed riding position that isn't as tall as the Tiger line.

I’d give anything to have the euro spec lighting options (drl, switch cube, and the rear setup). I have a Daytona 675R, and a 22 speed twin which are polar opposites, and I love each of them for their own quirks and features. Your musings about quickshifters make me wonder, do you know how to clutchless shift? I find the speed twin quite easy to slip up and down the gearbox without the clutch. It’s all about rev matching (I’m a lorry driver in the US, and I also never use the clutch in it, as well as the Daytona)

In 1983, I traded in by beloved 1977 registered Triumph T160V 'Trident' in for a brand new Triumph TSX Bonneville, I was attracted to the American West Coast styling of the TSX, but unfortunately it proved to be very unreliable compared to the Trident. My TSX was one of the last machines produced by the workers co-operative at the old Meriden works, the quality control must have been non existent towards their final days if my TSX was anything to go by. my T160V had a Norman Hyde big bore kit installed when I bought it, the capacity had been upped to 871cc. Lowering the preload will not soften the ride, it only adjusts where you are sitting in the stroke of the shock.
@RocketMan_Moto
@RocketMan_Moto 2 года назад
I get that, but according to the manual, the ride is softened as you reduce preload. There's also an H (for hard) and an S (for soft) on the adjuster wheel :)
@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff 2 года назад
@@RocketMan_Moto which manual? The Thruxton RS has adjustable preload on the front forks, they mark it much better as L and H - low and high preload. Both the Trident and Bonneville range only mention preload in relation to load on the bike as normal, nothing to do with comfort. Why would your shocks be more comfortable sitting further in their travel, e.g 50% as opposed to 30%? If your YSS shocks have adjustable damping H and S make sense but not in relation to preload. If the H and S are really in relation to preload it is only stating it is harder to overcome the initial load on the bike because you have added preload. Here is an example: You have just adjusted where it sits in the stroke. It is there to adjust for different weights. Here is a practical example on a manually adjustable bike. You get on the bike at 70Kg and you have the preload set at X and the shock is sitting 25% in its stroke. You lend you bike to a friend who is 120kg and when he sits on the bike the shock is sitting at 50% of its stroke. That is not good as he has lost too much of his compression stroke travel. So more preload is added to compensate for his extra 50Kg in weight, he winds up the preload X+10 (for example) turns to get the shock sitting back at 25% of its stroke, the same place you had it for your weight but now compensated for his. He gives you the bike back and now the bike "feels" stiffer at the rear, well it isn't, it is just that you need to overcome that extra 50kg of preload he put on the rear shock to get it moving like before, but once you have overcome that 50kg the spring rate is identical, even at differing preloads. Now when you get on the bike you might be sitting at 5-10% of the shocks stroke, no good for the road, you have little rebound travel left and that's not good. So you wind the preload back to X and get your suspension travel back to normal. Preload is just adjusting the shock preload for differing weights to make sure the shock is in a usable part of its stroke for best results.

@@RocketMan_Moto Gotcha. I like how the front screens look, but they make more wind noise if you mount your camera on the handlebar clamp, which I do... I have a bunch of videos on my channel, and I will be doing more now that I have this bike. One thing I did, which other tall riders might find useful, is take the stock risers, and flip them around. The bottom parts, the risers themselves, swap left to right, and rotate 180 degrees, put the bar into them and tighten the 4 bolts on the top of the clamp. This moves the OEM bar forward about 1.5 inches, keeps everything else exactly the same. Just moves it forward, as the risers have a 3/4 inch offset that is offset to the rear from the factory, but flipping them moves the offset forward... Looks stock, but if you are tall with long arms, makes it a little less cramped, and puts your weight slightly forward for more front end feel on those spirited rides...

I tested the Speed Twin, but can't imagine to be any close as fast as with the Triple R. The chassis of the Triple is just better, the handling more agil. 1980's Rowntrees fruit pastilles ads, Richard Trevithick...what fabulous analogies! You can take the boy out of Blighty... oh, and the video was top drawer too. I'd take the Speed, cos the Trident is just too toy-like for me and I still *hate* that rear mudguard.

A tune from DNK TuneWorks on either of those bikes would immediately rectify the lazy throttle on the Trident, but a tune from the Speed Twin would unleash the full tachometer, and make it really rip. Plus if you're never taking your Speed Twin over 5000, you're missing out on the last 3000 RPM on it as the redline is 8000 stock, 8400 tuned.

You're probably right. I need to look into tuning over the winter :)

What is the turning circle of the trident.

I haven’t measured it, but Triumphs are not renowned for their compact turning circles

Oddly enough I just swapped / traded my ‘10 Speed Triple in for a ‘19 Speed Twin! Me and the Triple just never really got on 🙁

So, what do you think? I had a 2017 Street Triple RS which was awesome, but it really needed revving and I found myself going everywhere are 200mph. The Speed Twin is more my style as I get older :)

I’ve got a 2016 speed triple s and I am considering changing for a 2021 speed twin for the same reason. My concern is that I’m 6’2” and 16 stone and I’m worried the speed twin will be too small. Thoughts?
@RocketMan_Moto
@RocketMan_Moto 2 года назад
Well, I'm 6'1" and 13 stone 5 and it's fine for me. My legs are maybe a little scrunched up, but I don't really mind that and won't be adding adjustable pegs. The only bikes that are really big enough for guys like us are full-size adventure bikes, but they're far too unwieldy in the garage, etc. I also have a Grom, so compared to that the Speed Twin feels positively spacious :)

I have the 2020 Speed Twin, and prefer it to the new one you had (which I did try out); the 'old' Speed Twin simply looks better, and I'll make the strong statement that if you're buying a retro, looks are your priority - the gaitered forks, the hand-painted tank lines, and easy tune and mod-ability of the motorcycle favour those who love an oldschool Triumph that looks the part and is easy to personalize. The latest generation Speed Twin went too modern in my view - tuning and modding is nearly impossible without massive investment due to the welded exhaust system and EURO5 ECU. While the new suspension of the latest Speed Twin is certainly a step up, it looks very modern for a 'retro', and a better cartridge kit and springs in the old one can easily match it. All that aside, the Trident and Speed Twin (regardless of generation) are absolutely aimed at different kinds of riders as I see it, and I imagine Triumph themselves see it this way as well.

I agree the previous generation does look more retro with its gaitered forks, but I personally prefer the 'resto mod' look of the new model. To the uninitiated, it still looks like an old bike, but those who know will recognise the USD forks and big brakes. That's the kind of look I always wanted and is why I held off for the facelift. I agree about the tuning, but I never mess with a bike's internals anyway. Both great bikes, as you say. Ride safe :)

@@RocketMan_Moto Aye, fairo! I just like that I can do a mild ECU tune on my 2020 without any bother (and did), or throw in an x-pipe (as I did), which the latest model just does not permit. I think most people were hoping for fully adjustable suspension on the latest model, but received a more or less 'half-way' upgrade, while also being slapped with a fully welded EURO5 exhaust system and anti-tweaking ECU; I will be curious as to how well the latest model shifts compared to the previous. Those who probably don't have much interest in tuning will likely want the newer one, if they don't mind the more 'modern' aesthetics. Cheers, and ride safe!

Agree.Relatively inexpensive suspension mods would bring the older Speed Twin's handling up to,and possibly surpass,the latest model. A de cat,fuel booster and performance air filter made a nice improvement to my 2020. Needs taller gearing,so a smaller (39 tooth) rear sprocket on order. Triumph have come close to a perfect motorcycle, with the Speed Twin,in my opinion. Just add minor seasoning to suit your taste.....

@@g.g.6362 Easier to swap the front sprocket up to a 17t, in my opinion! Agreed on gearing, though - it's a tad short.

I love the Trident in that colour scheme -looks great, so hope the wheels stay in that condition but given that it’s Portugal rather than UK they shouldn’t rust.

It's my favourite colour, too. As you say, rust really isn't an issue down here, although it has been pouring with rain all weekend :(
