I currently own a 2022 Triumph Trident 660, and as much as I love it, I am looking for something that carries a passenger better. In today's video I take the new Triumph Street Twin out for a test ride and weigh the pros/cons and if it's time to trade-in the 660 for the Street Twin.

I actually did what you are thinking of now. I traded in my Trident for a 2022 Street Twin. Just love the modern classic look and feel better. Better for my age group too!

Really? Was it a tough decision, how do you feel? It's been a week since I test rode the Street Twin and have had time to digest and think about it. Part of me is thinking of going for the Street Twin. It didn't handle as well as the Trident, but then again I'm no spring chicken. I'm 51 and think a Street Twin may fit my age group better. Hmmm, this is a tough one. Not sure what I'm going to do. Any other reasons why you made the switch? Thanks for the input

@@Mudslidex1 Moslty the look and feel suited me better. I loved the handling of the Trident, but the Street Twin also handles excellent - really any Triumph these days is a great handling bike. I was never racing from the light, so stop and go is not an issue for me. However, the Street Twin is much better for pull-away torque and will steam roll the Trident at higher speeds. You're also spending way more time in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears where the Trident is out of the lower gears so quickly because the range is limited. The Trident is also quite uncomfortable for a pillion (I like to take my wife for a coffee once in awhile) and it's just not a good highway bike. The Street Twin is more flexible for more TYPES of riding. I already bought panniers for overnight trips planned for this season and the accessories are 10-fold because it's a Bonneville. And one other thing - the sound.. stock sound that is.. just perfectly amazing for me on the Street twin. Funny thing you mentioned the TFT, but the Trident display started irritating me because of the limitations of what you could actually have on your screen at any given time. (For example: no odometer, instead having to look at the DATE - just stupid.) I would love a TFT on the Street Twin, but the options of what you want to see in the digital display make way more sense to me.
@Mudslidex1

@@martyshmanka Very good points. And yes, I never understood the limited options on the display of the Trident. It kills me that the clock is only visible on 1 of the display options. It should be on every selection you choose. I was hoping more aftermarket items would be available for the Trident but being so new, and supply issues right now make them hard to come by. Yes, the Street Twin does have good aftermarket support so that is an excellent point. I think I will go back to the dealer and see what kind of numbers they may give me for the Trident. Thanks again for your input, this is all good stuff

Very cool to come across this review as I am considering either one of these as my next bike. I started riding late at 62 last September on a 2021 Honda Rebel 500 SE. Perfect starter bike for me. Checked so many boxes but almost instantly I found myself wishing it was more like an 800cc with more torque and power. Rode it about 3000 miles before it just got too cold for me and my gear not to mention the salt, cinders, etc.... all over our broken crap roads. Dreamed about that next bike over the winter: Indian Scout Sixty or the Moto Guzzi V7 Stone 850cc which topped the list. I wanted to avoid chain drive for one. Loved both in test rides this spring and left a deposit on an Indian kitted out with a bunch of extras that made it mine. Sold the 500 early spring after a few hundred more miles and waited months for the Indian. Just recently cancelled the order in part because of dealer distance mostly but I really was not sure I'd like the fwd foot controls with short legs. I also started to question the amount of $ for the bike OTD. Today I test rode a Trident. I've been interested in them since before they were released even tho I'm most drawn to classics and cruisers. I was nervous about the seat height at 5'7" with short legs and coming from the low seat on the Rebel. On the Trident I can't quite flat foot, more like balls of feet. I was a little nervous about the bike on the whole till I started rolling. Skipped rain mode and felt comfortable enough with the bike but everything is so much sharper: steering, handling, brakes, power. Wow! What a blast, I was pumped on adrenaline the rest of the day. That performance combined with the exhaust and induction note I can imagine encouraging me to ride beyond my present skills. Damn sexy bike. Left a deposit but going back this week to ride again to compare to a 2022 Street Twin. Wish inventory was better so I could actually choose the color. For either I'll just have to settle for what's in and neither is my preferred. The Trident that's available in my 4th favorite color....white. Does look better in person but I'd prefer the matte black one with large white logo on tank. Not a deal killer tho.

Good luck. Tough choices to make. Now I know why people own more than 1 bike! I think you will be very happy with the Trident and I feel it really is one of the best bikes for the money right now. Between its performance and features, it really is the best bang for the buck! Good luck and happy/safe travels.

@@Mudslidex1 No kidding about what you get for the money with the Trident which for me comparing to the Street Twin I wonder how can these bikes be so differently priced. Seems you get more for less with the Trident. That's not to say I'd like the Trident more expensive but rather the Street Twin less. ;-),

I’ve had the street twin, Speed twin, and Trident. All three are very different in what they intend to do for the rider. I’m lucky enough to be able to end up with two out of the three. The one that’s out of the mix now is the speed twin. Update: just traded the trident back in for the new tiger 660. So let us know what your final answer is.

I also think to trade back in trident for new tiger 660 but I don't like the look of the headlight and general design of the tiger 660, although I am willing to ride long, so I'm a bit indecisive. What do you think it's worth trading?

What was the reason for letting go of the Speed Twin? All three of the bikes you had are what I am interested in. I love the looks and exhaust of the Street Twin, bit the Trident looks sexy and modern. Just don’t prefer the triple engine sound. The Speed Twin is just beautiful, but wondering in a 1200 is overkill for everyday riding. I used to have a 2009 Triumph America, so looking for something sportier. Thanks!

I feel you might be like me as a fellow east coaster can I suggest you go take a look at the Ducati diavel I to jumped from a rebel 500 last year I'm currently on a monster 821 and I couldn't be happier but the diavel was the bike I really wanted just couldn't afford. But it might be more up your alley more of a sport cruiser like the rebel but with alot more back bone in it

Those are really nice and I love the single-sides swing arm. But yeah a little too pricey for what I want to spend. I have a couple of used Triumph Americas around locally that I’m planning to look at. They can be had for $4-5000 dollar range. I think that will be good as I can keep the Trident which I love, and also have a retro style cruiser.

Street Twin felt better to me. Maybe its the seating position and/or the seat itself. But is more comfortable than the Trident 660. The Trident is known for it's not so comfortable seat. But I'm sure if you put a more comfortable seat on the Trident it would be fine. Both suspensions were responsive and good at soaking up the bumps, the Street Twin just felt to be a more comfortable ride for me

Good old Sunrise haha I’m in Suffolk County and just went to sit on both of these bikes and having a hard time deciding because they are both good in different ways. Is the Trident that fast? You should take a look at the Scrambler. It’s such a nice bike and thinking of that one too. Triumph is just too good.
@Mudslidex1
@Mudslidex1 2 года назад
Thanks. Nassau Triumph did have a nice used Triumph Scrambler for sale. They too are good bikes but I just don’t like the high exhausts in them. I know they serve a purpose for staying above water but I just don’t like they way those exhausts look. But that’s just me. It’s definitely hard trying to choose between the models as Triumph really makes some great bikes. And yea the Trident is pretty quick. Faster than the Street Twin but I don’t know how it compares with the Soeed Twin as they didn’t have any of those in stock for me to test. But I believe the Speed Twin is quicker

A Trident with a bigger seat on the back is a Tiger 660. Are you going to look at one of those?
@Mudslidex1
@Mudslidex1 2 года назад
Yeah, If I didn't have the Trident already I would have gone for the Tiger Sport or Street Twin, that would have been a tough decision to make. But at this time, it's too soon to take the depreciation hit trading in the Trident for the Sport or Street Twin just for bigger seat for the occasional passenger. If I'm going to be trading in the Trident, I would have to make a bigger jump to a Speed Twin, SpeedMaster, or possibly Bonneville T120 to make it worth trading in. Or keep my eyes open for an older used model of one of those, and have 2 bikes.

@lateralus9244 2 года назад
A significant part of the reason why your Trident 🔱 660 pulls better than the 900 twin is because it is a 3 cylinder--where the positions are spaced 120 degrees apart on the crank. Whereas, with the twin, typically, they are at the exact same position on the crank, only at different cycles. The twin has to push for 2 cylinders from that same awkward position (on the crank) for its 2 cylinders. And though the 3 cylinder pushes or power-strokes for 3 cylinders, 2 out of the 3 cylinders are always at better rotational leverage points on the crank--and both ready to slingshot around and move in the opposite direction with just 60 degrees of movement on any given power stoke. As they slingshot around and change direction, their mass and their change in direction help to get out of the way of the firing position's power stroke. They sort of give a pull/push effect to the piston that is on its power stroke and are less of a mass drag--because of better rotational leveraging and the slingshot effect. The twin has to drag a dead piston all the way around with it on each power stroke. Four cylinder engines have this problem too but are able to divide that 360 degrees of down time in half by having another position fire off at just 180 degrees of crank rotation. Typical 2 cylinders engines power stroke every 360 degrees of rotation, 4 cylinders every 180, and 3 cylinders every 240 degrees. In my humble opinion though, nothing sounds better in a bike than a 3 cylinder engine, but that's just me.

I test rode both and went for the Trident. I loved the Street Twin engine/exhaust noise, but found it lacked power, especially noticeable when you want that surge of power for an overtake. I could see myself swapping for Speed Twin in a couple of years.
@Mudslidex1
@Mudslidex1 2 года назад
I agree. They are 2 different bikes though and I was comparing it to my Trident as well. Not really a fair comparison as they serve different purposes. For me I have to decide if I want the Trident style of riding or the Street Twin. I really want the Speed Twin, but nobody has them in stock around here for me to test out.

@@Mudslidex1 I totally understand. I’ve been looking for my second bike and I currently have a Suzuki sfv650 gladius the Japanese Ducati monster. I’m thinking of getting a used speed twin or bmw f900r since it has cruise control. Locally here in Dallas tx they are too pricey used do I’m looking nationwide since I don’t mind making it a road trip riding it back home. That way I will be able to get to know the bike better. I would keep the trident 660 and upgrade to the speed twin. The trident 660 would be similar to my sfv650. You could end up touring on the speed twin if you wanted plus you could get the mc cruise control for the speed twin which would be perfect on long hauls.

To me this video is like comparing apples and oranges. The Trident 660 is more of a kid's bike. Sure it's quicker, but it is a very light bike with a three cylinder engine which priduces it's power high in the rev range. Where the Street Twin ia s heavier bike wtith a two cylinder HT engine which produces it's torque down low, but does not have a lot of high horse power high up in the rev range. It's sort of like comparing my old Honda 900 to a Harley Davidson. My Honda 900 was like riding a rocket, whereas the Harley even though it has a 114 C.I. engine (twice the size) is very slow. Sure the Harley has power, but the four cylinder Honda can scare the daylights out of you in any gear. It just boils down to what you want. It sounds like you enjoy the quickness of the Trident 660. Well, I'n OLD (70) So I would [refer the slower Street Twin. Ut sOunds to me like you better stick with your Trident 660 and forget the slower twin cylinder Triumphs. Why spend the money on something you'll probably never like.
