Learn from my mistake.
Recorded on location at the spectacular Shoshone Falls in Twin Falls, Idaho.
The error code from the Truma furnace confused me.
My stupid user error caused a series of events, including the van interior to cool to 63 degrees overnight in a 48 degree chilled outside night.
Fortunately, at 3:00 AM I switched the furnace energy mode from propane to Volta Pure3 lithium provided electricity. Immediate problem solved. But why the error code?
Learn from my experience, including how to clear a Truma error code.

Thanks Scott! I've been struggling the last few days with a E202 error on my Truma, nothing seemed wrong. It was working fine for a couple of days then suddenly stopped with this error - it was well below freezing in Massachusetts for several days. It is warmer today, I decided I must work on fixing it, and after watching your video all I did was clear out the error code and it started working fine on propane again!

Scott, once again thank you for sharing. Same happened to me yesterday afternoon, except I did it while turning on the hot water. So make sure you turn on the propane switch before setting the Truma! Now I need to get a brite red nail polish.

Thanks for the video. At 5:15, you state the manual doesn't have that code, yet at 3:19, the page you video shows code 212. Regarding the displayed code "E 212 H", E stands for error. 212 is the code number. H represents that the error is for the heater. E 212 H. Glad you got is sorted.

Thank you! I was getting a similar error code on my Truma Vario heat. The propane was on and the tank was full, but still got the code. I didn't know that the code has to be cleared or how to even do that. I contacted Truma and got nothing from them except to look up their national directory to find someone who might service Trumas. After watching your video, I went out to my camper van, turned off the coach power for a few minutes, then turned it back on. The code had disappeared and the Truma kicked on! Thank you!

I am glad that you got your furnace working right again. And yes, using electric to heat your rig is a big drain on resources. I would suggest getting a winter rated sleeping bag for just those cases.

If you didn't want to carry a sleeping bag as some have suggested as a back up, I would suggest an electric blanket. They draw about 80 watts or so.
@thoughtsinpassing2968
@thoughtsinpassing2968 4 года назад
The next truck stop probably has a 12 volt electric blanket. Of course Amzn will delivery one to your next location. I don't like hot, but I can cool off. BUT... when I get cold I'm chilled to the bone so my thinking an electric blanket is a good back up plan.

I've traveled over 500,000 mi in my camper, I always use an extra heavy down comforter / sleeping bag, and I always have a ski mask at hand. It keeps you warm at night when emergencies break loose. Also many Travelers have given up on propane, they just use a little buddy heater, or they have a little canister propane bottle for a little Buddy Heater or 4 cooking with. Also another little trick I always bring a 12 inch steel plate with me, I hate that up on the outdoor campfire at night, so it's blazing hot, then I bring it inside and put it on some rocks or whatever and it keeps the unit warm for many hours. I don't know that would be dangerous with a small unit like yours. But believe me that little piece of metal when it's blazing hot really Charles off a lot of heat inside the unit. Sometimes I've also put that piece of Steel in the oven and keep the oven door open, and it radiates warmed into the unit. Sometimes also if it's extremely cold and I need to conserve power, I will tarp off the mattress from the rest of the unit, so the body warmth will keep the unit warm. I know more and more people are also using that body bag so when they're sitting watching TV, they stay warm and toasty in the chair. I've never used a body bag in the RV. But I seen it used quite a few times. I've also seen people in the snow, in the campfire they warm up a copper kettle of hot water and then bring that inside so the warmth from the kettle keeps the unit warm for a while. Never done it so I don't know if it lasts very long or not. Now That I'm Older it's too hard to be in that kind of cold and night it bothers my COPD too much.

Great information!! I started watching RV Van videos back in the spring, decided this this is something I really want to do when I retire in the next couple of years and quickly got hooked watching every channel and video I could to learn all I could about the trials, tribulations and benefits of living in your van!! Great stuff!!!! Boy was I sorely disappointed this summer when 4 or 5 of those channels all decided to go to Alaska/Canada over the summer and suddenly the only information on these videos was watching miles and miles of them driving down the road or miles and miles of them talking while they were driving down the road or picture after picture of the mountains and very little about life on the road living in a van. One recent video was titled 'can you live with three people in a Travato K" but then did nothing but show scenery of the various parks they visited (and of course the obligatory videos of them talking while driving in the van). How is that a video about living with 3 people in a van? So THANK YOU thank you thank you Scott for staying true to your mission and continuing to offer valuable information about living in a van!!!!

So how is Luke liking vanlife? You mentioned you are going to Phoenix. Is there any chance of the channel showing some of the amazing sites in northern AZ? Such as the Petrified Forest or Horseshoe Bend?

Since the lithium batteries will power the a/c for over 7 hours. In winter time. How long will the propane last using the furnace?
@bobstern7827
@bobstern7827 4 года назад
A long time, the Truma ships the propane. Very efficient from my personal experience.
@gosmall.livelarge
@gosmall.livelarge 4 года назад
Bob's statement below is spot on CT. Propane is the way to go. I'm so glad to have two energy sources, Volta lithium electric AND propane. Propane is SUPER efficient for heating compared to electric. One year with my rig and maybe have filled propane 3x total.

4:24 did you say -obtaining heat is more challenging than air conditioning/cooling??????
@gosmall.livelarge
@gosmall.livelarge 4 года назад
Yes, when running heat from electric as the source instead of propane I find the electric is much less efficient than propane. Learned this the hard way on several occasion. Now in use propane for heat unless I am plugged into shore power then I se electric heat to conserve propane. Hopefully that makes sense. Great comment | questions BramdNew New!

Hi- I’m curious whether just switching the Truma furnace setting to OFF would have reset it. Hmm... maybe that would allow you to get the gas turned on and start over? I’m guilty of forgetting to turn the outside propane switch on😬 which is not fun to rectify in the middle of the night. Thanks for your informative videos, Scott!

Same problem here. You didn’t present a solution. Clearing an error code does not fix the root cause of the error. The propane switch IN the van does not need to be on for heating to work. The manual is also not helpful. We used propane heating for 2 weeks without issue, now in a torrential downpour at temps in the mid 40s that error keeps popping up, clearing the error msg obviously doesn’t solve the actual problem.

True.. many RV systems need a UI (user interface) upgrade. I mean it is near 2020 for gawds sake! It is a great heat and hot water system though. I'd take true functionality the Truma provide over fancy interface it push came to shove.,
