Troubleshoot A GPU - Pt 6 How To Test A Graphics Card - Computer Turns On No Display On Monitor

To troubleshoot a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) that may be causing your computer turning on but no display on monitor, the cause will be different depending on whether you are getting a successful POST or not. In this video I show you how to test the graphics card, whether its a PCIe powered graphics card or a motherboard powered GPU.
Note: This is NOT A REPAIR Video, only troubleshoot and replace. LinusTechTips did a couple on videos on this, and plenty of others, see below link, where they use an "Oven Method" to maybe bring your video card back from the dead.

Thanks! you fixed my problem. I had built a new PC using only the CPU graphics, and everything was working great. I then added an GPU card and then no post, no display on either graphics ports. Dude, you saved me a ton of time and money. Didn't need to watch more than 3 minutes to realize I plugged the damn DVI cable to the wrong port and that's what caused my issue... Thanks for going through all the "basics" before delving into the deep shit. (Haven't owned a PC for 25 years so I'm a bit "off") 😅

I watched this series, like the motherboard, the rams, and this one like 6 months ago, and never look back to "how to fix no signal". And thanks to you, i figured out that my 4year old gpu finally dead. Bought new one and my pc life once again The beep (neither three beeps for a missing ram and single beep for working properly) and test from my motherboard that has it own graphic card gave me proof that my 4 years old GT630 finally dead.

I know this a somewhat old video, but referring to the externally powered gpu.. If my psu was plugged into my graphics card BUT it wasnt sending proper voltage, or any at all, would it act as if there was no graphics card present? Right now I'm having an issue where everything on my PC works except when I plug in my graphics card. I can plug in a pcie powered graphics card and it posts just fine. But when i try and use my graphics card with psu power I get no display.

Hey, i have laptop,Asus Rod Strix GL 503 with GTX 1060. How can tell if the gpu is broken? Only issue is that it drops FPS with every game and all games are slow and sluggish but otherwise it is working normally. Can it be graphic chip or sometihng else? I already updated gpu driver of course it did not helped at all. Also power setting are same when it worked just fine.

hi i just so happen to have the same problem with my graphics card sometimes, when i press the power button but nothing on the display and usually what i would do is just re-seat the card cause its just a gigabyte gt 730 at the moment, really low end card

Using a EVGA Ge force GTX 1070 and last night I cleaned my pc and took the case apart but didn't remove any wires. Today I go to turn pc on and the fans under the graphics card will do a half spin and stop and I have no display on monitor. On the m board I have a red light on the CPU LED. i have gt 710 nvidia. when bios is set to pcie 16 video configuration, no display. but computer boots up fine .when i set to onboard graphics with attached video card, it boots up fine. i can install all nvidia drivers even use nvidia control panel.but when i connect my monitor to cards vga i get no display?is videocard dead then why it appearing in device manager? it says working properly.and also i have msi gaming plus b 360 motherboard that has a led indicator in pcie slot. according to the manual of board. red light shows running in 16x mode white shows 8x mode..i see white led after i start computer? why is it running in 8x mode? i tested another card gt730 on same slot it woks fine with red indication showing display? is my graphics card dead i need quick reply......

What if i have the video cable plugd on the motherboards gpu, i have an externa gpu installed and my screen turns on when i have it plugd in the on board gpu (when i plug it the external gpu no screen. +my external gpu fans don t spin, the pc boots in windows just fine when i lock on device manager it shows an unknown device. (the gpu it s compatibile it s a sapphire nitro r9 380 4g on an Asus m4a89gtd pro/usb3 and an 500w power supplye from segotep BP500w 80 plus bronze. (the power supplye it s new)

Hello can someone help me out. So I have a GTX 560Ti MSI Twin Frozr II edition which requires two 6-pins, I had a power supply powering it and it was working completely fine, but then my power supply popped and I want to use my graphics card again but to do that I need to buy another power supply but I don't know if the graphics card works. Is there a way to test the graphics card to see if it works as I don't have a strong enough power supply to power it before I buy a power supply I don't want to waste money as I'm looking to buy a power supply from a seller on GumTree and I don't think I can return the power supply if my graphics card does not work

Help me pls, so whenever I have the graphics card installed it will not show anything, but if I will unplug the dvi cable and plug a vga cable to the motherboard the display will show up. I thought if you'll install a gpu the cable should be plugged in there but why is mine the other way around?

One thing you forgot was to swap the ram over into different slots, if you have them in the "incorrect" slots, it may bootup with onboard GPU but the dedicated GPU won't like it.

I was having an issue where the monitor had no signal from the GPU. I noticed the GPU had a red light. I removed it and reseated it. Problem fixed. Could have been dust?

Ive got a crazy one... this core i5 hp pc.... will turn on just fine for a few hours then shuts down power cycles , fails to boot then beeps 4 times... ive done everything i know except change the Processor, however wait for a day or two return everything as it was it turns on just fine but guaranteed it do the same ..... what could be the issue?

Brother my gigabyte 1050ti' s (low profile) fan don't spin even temp reaches 85 degrees. Also tried with softwares like msi afterburner but didn't worked, fan is working when i tested it with the battery, but don't spin when attach to the gpu's pcb. Can you help?

I have a setup that will not power on when i put the graphics card in. Now, this graphics card doesnt require power from the psu. It just draws power from the motherboard. Whenever i try to plug in the VGA cable (which works fine btw) to the graphics card and connect it to the monitor, the computer wont just power on. No post whatsoever. Even if i use the VGA and plug it in the motherboard (which has a slot for integrated CPU graphics) It still wont turn on. Basically, when the graphics card is slotted in the PCI, the pc wont turn on. If i remove it.. however, and use the integrated graphics it will work fine. I tried clearing CMOS, tried re-seating everything, i tried removing static from the computer for 30 seconds and at this point it still wont work if i plug it in to the graphics card. I am wondering if this is a possible DOA (Dead on arrival) or is it even possible that my PCI slot is damaged? It looks okay though, no burn marks or whatever. ALSO, there is no beep whatsoever in this machine. Not even if it post properly. Not even if i use the integrated graphics card. Help! .

If you're switching out cards for troubleshooting, don't you need to remove drivers for the old before installing the new in Windows 10?

No, He's only talking about P.O.S.T. (power on self test) which occurs before windows is even booting up. He's only checking for hardware issues not software.

Hi bro, I bought a new mother board z690 asus and the new i7 12700k to replace my old ryzen 7 1700x but I have a problem, I do not have video output in the first pci-e slot " the one reinforced with metal" using an AMD RX 590 GPU, what is weird is that the same GPU works just fine if I place it in the second pci-e slot. I tested other stuff in the first pci-e slot like a pci-e usb 3.0 expansion card and it works, an old gforce gtx 270 and it works, but my AMD RX 590 does not work in that slot, I tried everything from Bios and driver update to a different psu . what do you believe guys, is it my graphic card thatt's defective or is not compatible or did I receive a board with a defective pci-e slot ? I would use the second pci-e slot but the gpu does not fit because of the lack of space in the case. I need to find a new gpu to test it to decide if I have to return this motherboard, I am pissed because of this.

can someone help me? my gpu did have a light and fan is spinning (weird) when i connect HDMI to the GPU the screen is blank and if i connect HDMI to onboard the screen is fine. And GPU is not detected in my device manager. Even the driver software itself said i didn't install my GPU on. I search all over the place to solve this, but they just say get new motherboard and problem solved. My 3 of ram slot also can't detect ram on it, only 1 is working right now. First of all. Thanks for your amazing tutorial. Since I can see that you know a lot about these issues I want to ask you something. I have a gtx 1060 6 gb and I am having some issues with it. I was playing metro and the game suddenly crashed but the screen had no signal. Then I restarted the PC and it kept on working a little bit so I tried running the game again and the game did not even load when it creashed again. I restarted again the PC and when it was loading windows I did not have any signal on the screen and the fans sounded really loud. I have not been able to use the video card ever since but I can use the onboard graphics to have access to the PC. Once I could get into the PC I checked the eventvwr ad I noticed that there were problems wth DWM.EXE, so I think that when windows tries to load the visual effects used by AERO the graphics card crashes. Is it my video card? Or could it be my PSU?... My PSU is relatively old, it is like 7 years old and it is a THERMALTAKE TR2 430 Watts... The GPU requests 400 watts as the minimum wattage and the rig was working fine for about 1 month. Thanks for any suggestion or piece of advice.

did u fixed it ?? bcz i hv same problem .. after playing game then it crash and no more signal .. even i restart it still no signal .. it only display when i connect to mobo

Hi!! I have been having problems with my evga gtx 980ti. When I start my computer everything is fine and works normally. The problems only start to happen when I play a video game on higher graphical settings. When I do so my computer just shuts off and will not turn back on. Untill I unplug it and plug it back in to the wall outlet. This seems to only happen while gaming. I was wondering if you knew what the problem could possibly be. I was using a gtx 960 before I got my gtx 980ti and I was having no problems with it.

I'm trying to use a VGA cable to get display from the mother board and im getting a no display signal ? Although I use a graphics card for gaming But the graphics card has no VGA output Sooo?

What about a GPU that isnt detected by UEFI? The GPU isnt detected in the slot. I am guessing its toast, as the VRM area looks heat stressed.

when i try to run Furmark or any game my screen turns Brownish for a few seconds and than goes completely into blackscreen with my Keyboard turned off as well anyone might have a tip on what it is ? im thinking its a faulty rx570 but i dont know whats wrong because its not simple overheating issue

Your PSU may not have enough power for everything if it's only 450W

i get three beeps and no display but PC does post. I can use RDP perfectly fine. My motherboard has no onboard GPU.

Assalam Alaykum Ya Akhy I'm wondering whether upgrading this dell vostro 3902 since it has i5-4570T , 8GB of RAM, 1TB Of HDD , first my thought is buying RX 470 (4GB) which means i have to upgrading power supply first before anything then I will buy used rx 470 from Aliexpress , and then SDD and may be CPU, but you I'm from Africa this things if you ordering from ebay or amazon comes with high shipping cost more than twice of actual product price while not for Aliexpress they have used parts with comfortable price and shipping cost to Africa. Or should I buy completely different new set of used parts Aliexpress (motherboard , graphic card, CPU , SSD etc) except case I have cooler master case that came as used pc from Europe, so should I upgrading this one I have or buying different used parts??

I installed diffirent gpu for a test… then I installed back my own gpu and the fans are not spinning as well there is no display… power led light on gpu is on but doesn’t work… What should I do?

I have a fairly new gtx 1050 ti and a good psu my pc was working fine but today i turned it on it doesn't beep mouse and keyboard are light up i tried multiple cables and i tried the onboard graphics i checked the monitor and its working on other pcs . The fans are spinning and light up but the gpu fans start spinning for a bit and stop spinning
